Tyrion Lannister Conquers the Emmys

Peter Dinklage won the Emmy Award last night for his role in HBO's Game of Thrones.

Way back when I first heard that George R. R. Martin was in talks with HBO to make an adaptation of his fantasy series, I immediately wondered who would play Tyrion Lannister. The character is a dwarf, but the actor needed the charisma necessary to get audience's on his side. What diminutive actor could pull off such a pivotal role? After Warwick Davis, there aren't that many to choose from. Thankfully, the only actor I considered ended up getting the role, and Peter Dinklage's performance in the first season of HBO's adaptation was just as amazing as I had anticipated. It seems that I wasn't alone in my estimation of his portrayal because, last night, Emmy voters honored him with the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

When his name was called, the actor slowly made his way to the acceptance microphone (which was significantly lowered for him) and Dinklage was both humble and snarky. "Wow, I followed Martin Scorsese," he said, referring to the director who had just won an Emmy for directing the pilot of Boardwalk Empire. "You're a legend!"

He went on to thank his dogsitter, eliciting giggles from the crowd and his wife Erica Schmidt who is much taller than him, before shouting out the producers of Game of Thrones. "I couldn't do this without David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the producers, they were the first to call me and tell me about this part," he said. "HBO you're quite simply the best place to work for you - you let artists create."

The win for Dinklage feels a bit more personal to me because I once worked with Peter Dinklage when I was a stage manager in New York. He was developing a show directed by dance legend Martha Clarke about the French artist Toulouse Lautrec. Dinklage played the eponymous role, and fresh off his success in The Station Agent, he was alternately warm and wary of the people around him. Still, the charming smile was always there, especially when he had to deal with Clarke's rambunctious Pomerian dogs.

I am happy that Dinklage has gone on to receive credit for his incredible ability, especially in a role that means so much to me and my fellow dorks. With Game of Thrones renewed for at least one more season, I look forward to more Tyrion Lannister and can't wait to see him portray the events of the next few books.

I wonder how good a shot Dinklage is with a crossbow ...

Shame that Game of Thrones didn't win for best drama series, but Peter Dinklage winning is just so awesome. Can't wait for season 2.

Oh you sneaky bugger you...

Either way he deserves it 100%, he completely stole the show in Game of Thrones.

Well deserved, looking forward to Season 2.
Especially however they're gonna handle the Battle of the Blackwater.

Testing the old Gold-Shitting Theory again, are we?
To be fair, Tyrion stole the show for me in the actual books. He's right up there with Arya Stark, Jon and Darnarys for the characters I care about the most, simply on account of being interesting.

It also helps that he pimp-slapped Joffrey flat-out.

Am I that far behind tv? I didnt recognise a single show or actor in that entire report.

You might want to fix that Greg.

OT: I could agree more on the win, very much deserved.

You are practically teasing the people who haven't read the books. You're evil; here, let me lend a hand to it
I wonder if Tyrion Lannister really does shit gold?

I giggled at the "estimation". Seems like a pun on "estimate" i.e. appraising Mr. Dinklage's worth on account of his size. Not sure if you intended it, though.

OT: 5 episodes in the series, I knew who the emmy was going to it. Pretty obvious and equally deserving.

A well-deserved win, he's by far my favorite character on the show. Best actor too, also by far.

Apparently, and I must say that you're really missing out. There's an amazing amount of high-quality shows these days. Yes even outside the geeky and comedy spectrum.

The retro-head inside me is also very happy about TV land's apparent love affair with the 20's/50's/60's, with Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire and the upcoming The Playboy Club and PanAm.

But yeah, he totally deserved to win that Emmy, and I'm glad he did. I've been hoping for it ever since I saw he was nominated, because aside from Tyrion being one of my favorite characters and one of the most interesting, Peter Dinklage did such a great job playing him. I kind of wish that I looked like him so I could be him for Halloween this year instead of being stuck with Khal Drogo because of my hair/beard. Poor me. Heh.

I'm a little sad Game of Thrones didn't win anything else (yeah, it won best title design [very deserved], but no one pays attention to the technical awards), but at least Peter got his due.

Dammit, Mad Men, stop winning best drama every year. Let someone else have it.

Awesome! It's well-deserved, he was fantastic. One of the few portrayals of a character that almost exactly matched the way I imagined them from the books. Really looking forward to season 2.
