Sure a female Dr Who. We could say that the time lords are evolved from slugs. Yeah, that's the ticket. Then he could appear in one episode as a male character and then the next week he could be female. Yeah that'll work.

Are you out of your minds.

Look, I'm all for letting women have good roles in sci-fi, believe me, but no to this. Sorry, but no. Yes, they could certainly find ways to work it into the mythology if they really wanted to, but there's just no need for this. There are female Time Lords (calling them Time Ladies always seemed so silly) and the Doctor's female companions have become more than just screamers running around in skimpy costumes, so there's ample room to have a strong female character on the show without making her the Doctor.
Exactly! Why does a women have to be the friggin doctor? What the hell happened to Rose and his bloody daughter eh? I mean jeezus what the hell! Did they even watch the series before last, surely Martha comes across as a

Oh good sweet Christ! First, you have Tennant resigning his role as The Doctor. A tragedy, because with the possible exception of Tom Baker he is the best Doctor in the series. Then you have this poorly though out gender equality idea as a possible replacement? No. Just no.

I'm all for increasingly strong female roles in any genre. They certainly make things interesting. But you're talking about a decision that alters and potentially cheapens over forty years of sci-fi history. Whatever else that might accomplish, it would almost certainly be the death knell of the Doctor Who series.

Instead of trying to muck about with such a wonderful legacy, why not try to create a new series with such a strong female character? Given the fact that sci-fi series are experiencing quite a bit of popularity these days, a well-written and acted series with a strong female lead would certainly find an audience. I know I'd watch.

Well if it were a woman, it would still be the 'doctor' - just in a female body. Making previous 'relationships' an awkward subject...

...oh and imagine the fan fiction/art... i'm sure pubescent teens would be all over that.

Wouldn't that make all romantic subplots in the past incredibly awkward retroactively?

And I don't like it, as that would mean Dylan Moran would not be the next doctor.
This and they would need to hire a bunch of female writers.

I'm against it. Then again, I'm hardly a true fan of the series, having only managed to see a few episodes on Youtube before they got taken down.

Damn, that makes me a feminist.

I actually like the idea.

And for those who don't like the idea, you did see Joanna Lumley in The Curse of the Fatal Death?

Or President Romanadvoratrelundar (spelt F.R.E.D) [http://comics.shipsinker.com/2008/04/23/the-10-doctors-page-88/]

But personally, I've always thought the Next Doctor (after me of course) should be Noel Fielding.

Edit : Oh *shakes fist at Malagrys for getting to this first*

Call me granddad stuck in the past, but i think that theres no need for the doctor to be a woman- characters like Rose and Martha put across a great female image, i dont think the relationship between doctor and companion would work as well with a male companion. As for the next doctor, what about Damian Lewis or Ewan Mcgregor?

not completely on topic but - "he would not be returning to the show following two five-episode specials that will air in 2009 and early 2010"
5x2 = 10, and 10 = roughly a series to my eyes.....

Here's the thing. Pre-established characters have been given gender-switches in reboots (see: Battlestar Galactica). The only difference being they weren't a Time Lord.

It doesn't work because it's the Doctor.

Romana worked because she was a pre-established female Time Lord. The Doctor's "daughter" is another such entity that hell, could be used as a female Time Lord and thus the argument here anyway is pretty much pointless. Damn feminazis.

I always thought the Doctor was a male character - meaning that he could change his appearance and personality, but not his gender. (People before referred to the Doctor as a 'he'....)
There's never been any talk about Time Lords being hermaphrodites (sp?).
There have been a number of strong female characters in the series, so that stops that argument. I wonder whether the group have actually watched the programme?

By the way, I'm not against having female leads in TV programmes but it just wouldn't work in Doctor Who, in my opinion.

You'd not be in favour of a Ethnic Doctor Who?

I could easily see Sanjeev Baskar, Felix Dexter, Jean Reno or Gary Oldman as the Doctor.

So the Time Lords sometimes become Time Ladies? I've studied canon to a massive degree and it's no worse than giving Daleks emotions. (Which shatters their whole basic makeup)

Oh, and that would make the relationship with Riversong even more 'interesting'

I'd rather have a new sci-fi series where the protagonist is a woman than having an old series change in a really strange fashion.

But doctor who already has the Rani and the Doctor's grandaughter (old series characters).

The Doctor has never gone through a sex change. For goodness sake, this is just stupid. The doctor used to hate humans, now he's falling in love with them. The show has gay characters of both sex's in it, theres no need to make the Doctor cross dress!
