U.K Retailers Refute 3DS Returns Report

Retailers in the U.K. say a tabloid report that the Nintendo 3DS is being hit with "record return levels" after making thousands of gamers dizzy and sick with headaches is simply not true.

"Furious gamers made ill by Nintendo's new 3DS console have been refused full refunds!" So blares the headline of today's article in Nintendo 3DS [http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3509635/Furious-dad-who-got-ill-playing-Nintendo-3DS-for-3-MINUTES-is-denied-a-full-refund.html], driven largely by the fact that the handheld's unique 3D capabilities are making literally thousands of gamers sick. 27-year-old Sundeep Tailor, for instance, became ill after playing for just three minutes - three minutes! - with his young son, but when he tried to return the system, Game offered him only £176.99 ($288), £30 ($48) less than he paid for it.

"Although we've not been able to offer a full refund to those complaining of feeling ill, we are offering alternative options to help those who have been affected in this way," a Game rep said. The company is offering an in-store credit of £190 ($309) or £180 ($293) cash for 3DS rigs traded in before April 25. But are people really lining up to get their money back?

Well, no. "Recent reports are incorrect," Nintendo told Eurogamer [http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-04-05-nintendo-discredits-3ds-headaches-story]. "The number of calls and emails with queries on Nintendo 3DS is in fact well below the rate experienced during past hardware launches and having spoken with our retail partners there are only a handful of people who have actually gone into stores to request a refund."

Retailers are expressing similar sentiments. Game issued a statement saying, "We've had less than five people complain that they feel sick and want to return [the system]," while fellow retailer Currys said, "We have not noticed a big increase in returns."

The Sun's report apparently conflates overall trade-in numbers with returns due to illness, according to HMV, which naturally paints a misleading picture. "We would like to make clear that we are not aware of any manufacturing fault with the 3DS console - which we have seen huge demand for, and that we have not issued any refunds for it and nor are we doing," a company rep said. "A number of customers are, however, choosing to take us up on our pre-played games offer - which is a totally different thing, where they can trade-in previously purchased games products, including the 3DS if they so choose, against any other products that we stock in-store up to a pre-determined set value"

Nintendo did offer some advice for parents and gamers concerned about potential side effects: try before you buy. "Our advice for anyone concerned about potential side-effects or for anyone who just wants to take a look at a Nintendo 3DS is to ask to see and play one before they buy," a rep said. "Most stores will only be too happy to oblige."

The U.K. launch of the 3DS was a big success for Nintendo, hitting 113,000 units over its first weekend.

"Sick after 3 minutes" Maybe try and change the settings? Not everyone can play with the 3D slider on full strenght unaffected =/

To try is for free, I've tried the 3DS several times in-store, if only I had money to buy it =(

Tbh, The Sun sounds like one of those anti-gaming newspapers.

A tip to all our cousins across the pond.

If the Sun says it, it's probably bullshit.
I wouldn't say it's anti-gaming, it's just run by idiots, for idiots.

I had a go on 3DS and it didn't do much for me in the way of 3D, I just got a blurry image and a mild headache, but it wasn't mine and I didn't really have much time to experiment with the slider to see what was most comfortable for me.

It was fun with the 3D off though, Augmented Reality is probably the best tech demo ever.

You're correct, it's also one of those newspapers who doesn't mind making up the occasional story if it can further the cause of "VIDOE GAMEZ R BAD!!1!1!"

I bought condoms and i found out that im allergic to latex, can i have a refund?

There's nothing wrong with the system, just because some cant use it doesn't mean they deserve a full refund.

The Sun is the UKs equivelent of USA's Fox. They both hate gamers for some reason (mainly it's "killing our youth") and they both say anything to get ratings and views.

I'm pretty sure the effects of the 3ds are the same as those of other digital 3d screens. In fact, I would think that the lack of glasses would cause less strain then their large glasses required counterparts, but what do I know?

The Sun gets most of their media information off forums. It was actually proven once when somebody made a rumour up on GallifreyBase and a few days later The Sun actually reported said rumour. Claiming it was from a proper source.

Well, it was from the Sun. Only idiots would believe it, and even worse, only those idiots would print it

I've got a better idea than try before you buy: it's called "turn the gimmick off." Put that 3D slider down into the "off" position and be happier for it. It doesn't add anything useful to the games, and your tradeoff for this is that your battery life is drastically shorter and you might make yourself sick. Really, the choice is obvious. Turn off the 3D and be happy playing the 3DS for many years.

They really should have called this thing DS Advance or DS 2 or anything but 3DS. So many people refuse to see that you can just turn the 3D nonsense off and still have a fantastic gaming platform in your hands.

I dunno. It makes it easier for me to judge depth in games with the 3d turned on. Outside of Pilotwings and one or two of the minigames I suppose it's doesn't do much, but that might change once more devs realize the potential of 3D.

Both Fox News and The Sun are owned by Rupert Murdoch. At least Fox News have the decency to stick to their political bias, The Sun just goes with whoever's popular at the time (Eg, Stayed conservative throughout the 80s switched to Labour 6 weeks before Tony Blair was elected in 1997 and then switched back to back to Conservative before David Cameron got elected in 2009.)

This is a newspaper which prints false sometimes offensive headlines just to get attention. It writes using the average vocabulary of a 7 year old and seems to think whatever Katie Price is up to is worthy of the front page headline when there's civil war in Libya and 10,000 or more dead in Japan. The only decent part of it is page 3 and thats only if you're a guy who doesn't know what internet porn is.

And yet ironically they think games are killing society.
