Last time I was warned about an animal king (sentient cloud, or other governing body that either refuses to or is incapable of listening to reason), said animal king wasn't much of a threat.
Cookie for the reference drop.

OT: I agree that the article is kinda stupid, but it does raise a good point even if it wasn't entirely the focus of the discussion. We should at least be preparing ourselves for how we would handle a second sentient species on the planet. We've been on top for so long that I know we'd have a hard time sharing power, but it's our responsibility as a sentient species to consider such things. It might be several hundred millennia before another species evolves to that point, but with the way we affect the environment, we could fast-track some species to becoming far smarter than they would have on their own.

I will have to agree.

Making a being as smart as us that is in all other ways physically better will end HORRIBLY.

Why we shouldn't make apes OR robots any smarter.

Mmm, you're all saying it's ludicrous and it will never happen...

That's what they always say...

Any tests that attempt to make animals more human should be given a big sticker that reads "Warning: Likely To Be A Really Fucking Bad Idea."
I think the escapist has a seal for that...

The issue is not so much that they might take over (humans have pretty much mastered the art of killing things), it is that if they are ever created these creatures would have no legal protection. I could definitely see them being turned into slaves in some third world country. even if we outlaw that, it would take years for every country to agree to give these animals the same protections that we have as humans. If we don't have some laws to protect species of near human intelligence ahead of time, one day someone will make a fortune selling "non-Humans" as slaves.

Whilst the idea that scientists are taking Planet Of The Apes seriously amuses me, I'm more amused by the fact that people somewhere are actually trying to "inadvertently" recreate it, more or less. It's generally a bit silly.

"You know the one. At the end, he says 'You did it! You finally did it!' and then you see the Statue of Liberty on the beach."

That, or if we work on machines more, we'll have a Matrix situation. So either way it's a loss/loss.

And?

Why would this be a bad thing?

Assuming the far fetched senacrio that we do somone create a animal with human intellgence, why is it a bad thing?

Assuming we treat it as a being with dignity and respect, why not? Such a creature would provide a HUGE insight into the differences between humans and other creatures.

I'd rather us risk making some unstoppable shark gorilla corcodile with human intellgence than just ban research of this stuff because it's wrong.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I am guessing that even if they become as smart as humans, I don't think they will be able to afford a tank or jet (they might be able to get some guns). I don't care if you are strong as an ape, if you come up against a tank or a plane, you lose.

I wonder how much this Telegraph "journalist" and supposed scientist were paid by the movie studio or their marketing agency.

Honestly...

We have guns and tanks and planes and nukes... and a severely higher population...

This is a non issue... or even better, a cleaver PR stunt by the movie company xD

I suppose it never occurred to these people to make the apes less aggressive and fundimentally passive before granting them sentience.

I'd hate to see this "scientist's" opinion on, say, robotics after watching Terminator. Seriously, how is this man employed?

I really doubt that a "Planet of the Apes" scenario could happen right now. Sure most wild primates are stronger and faster than humans. And give them human like intelligence and now they can kill a human in a one on one fight.

But we're everywhere. All over the place. And we have guns. And planes. And tanks. And bombs. And boats. And tactics. And all sorts of shit that a bunch of newly uplifted apes wouldn't be able to fight back against.

Unless the worry is offending God, who last I checked never existed or at the very least still has yet to smite the world for creating the Jonas Brothers, child molestation, hipster irony and the Bravo network, we can definitely still shoot primates lots of times no matter how smart they are.
