Ubisoft: Assassin's Creed Will Be as Big as GTA

I must be the only person alive who absolutely loved Assassin's Creed 1. Unique premise, interesting story, great protagonist. And for everyone who whines that "it's repetitive" and then goes and plays the multiplayer of Call of Duty or Halo or whatever, look up "hypocrisy" in the dictionary. Assassins Creed 2 was even better, which I didn't think was actually possible. And now it looks like Brotherhood will come along and destroy the series with idiotic multiplayer. Face it guys, multiplayer does far more harm than good.

AC is a great franchise, as is GTA, but AC will never get the publicity GTA gets, due to all the factors GTA has, an obvious one being the controvesy it causes. As for Halo, I just don't think it has strong enough roots to be as big as Halo was, due to Halo CE being a killer app for the original xbox, that everyone wanted to have.

When I read the post title I thought that the guy meant 'AC's sandbox will be as big as GTA' which is quite possible. On the other hand being as well recognized as GTA... well he kinda overestimates the appeal of assasins in ren fair costumes versus your every day action movie thug.

I was agreeing with you, and then I wasn't. I absolutely loved AC1, mainly for the atmosphere and free running (which AC2 had as well), but also for the open-ended assassination contracts that you could actually prepare for (which AC2 didn't have). As for multiplayer, it looks like they're handling it really will in Brotherhood. And multiplayer can't ruin a game, because it won't change the single player. Its like the film adaptation of a tv show; even if the multiplayer equals "The Last Airbender" in terms of badness, the single player will still rock.

I feel a profound moment of "meh" about this. Could it be that popular? Sure. Does it matter, now that they're consistently a good B-List star? Not really. We will pick up the notable titles, and pass over the others. Here's Hoping Brotherhood will be one worth picking up.

Edit:

I don't doubt it. In my opinion, Grand Theft Auto, the entire SERIES, is shit. But that's just because I don't like the concept of the game, or the graphics, or the controls, or the story.

He even said it wasn't as big now, but that it had a good position to become as big as the others. I think it definitely does.

It's really not as ludicrous a thing to say as people are making it out to be.

They're shooting themselves in the foot with the DRM though; R* couldn't make a decent PC port if someone did it for them. AC was a pretty well done port on the other hand. Then there's the hideous problems that GTA IV suffered from, like a crap protagonist, hideous pacing, ugly graphics, and a character that handled like a sack of shit.

The only problem AC faces is that it's much more of a high-brow concept than GTA, and it hasn't been around for anywhere near as much time. There's also the issue with the sweeping story-arc, which GTA games aren't tied to.
You forgot to mention absurdly overpriced dlc.

I too think the biggest issue AC might have in topping gta is the fact that gta has been around for over three generations of gaming: since even before the first playstation. That?s quite a heritage and quite a fanbase.
However, I have to say that in this generation (aside from the handheld games) I have been much more impressed by what?s been made for the Assassin?s Creed franchise than what?s been done for gta, which is to say not much.

As much as I loved Assassin?s Creed 2, I think (if Vegas can live up to the last installment) Fallout has a better chance of becoming the new king of open world exploration.

Theoretically, a franchise on multiple fronts will be bigger than a series mostly confined to a singular output.

Also, didn't they say they were taking a break from AC?

With Obsidian now at the helm it hasn't got a hope in Hell.

As for the DLC thing, I don't think overpriced DLC would put people off of buying the main package still.

yeah it could be. mainly because the drm debacle only applies to pc gamers which dont make up a huge share of the market

Seriously? The way you guys put it, they sound like a bunch of cocky, arrogant douchebags.

They were more or less just saying that they've arrived as a franchise, only using GTA and Halo as comparison or example. Is this really worthy of flipping out?

I didn't know Ubisoft had become comedians! First the 3D TV joke and now this, is this the sign of a promising future career in comedy for this guy?
