If you open this Guide: http://tinyurl.com/FalconGuide about building yourself a PC and compare it with the Technical Specs of the current Consoles we are slowly getting to GameCube/Playstation compared to PC levels of differences again before the more "Advanced" consoles came out.

The Xbox360 for instance is placed somewhere a lot below the "Minimum" Spec with only 512MB RAM and the ATI Xenos (which is a hybrid between R580 and R600 from 2005-2006, those cards aren't even sold anymore for at least 3+ years). It is even below the "Destitute" build in things like Harddrive space, but especially most damning the amount of RAM.

Games on new consoles are going to get new things like Tesselation, Real Time Radiosity Lighting Technology, Bokeh, improved AI routine APIs etc. not to speak from increased resolutions and framerates (the current consoles love running games at or below 720p at ~30FPS) and level of detail/polygons on both models and textures that will make an immediate difference right out of the box.

A new generation has been overdue for a few years at least already...
^^ I agree with this guy.

Everyone stop being poor and go work some more to get some more money! I want a new console. PS4!!!

And for all you saying they, "Barely touched the processing power."
It's bullshit. Complete bullshit. I don't know where you guys are getting that from but I am amazed at what they have done with the garbage hardware that is in there already. They were saying that maybe 3 years ago when Gears 2 came out and Killzone 2 but I am pretty sure with Killzone 3 and Crysis 2 they hit a graphical ceiling with the systems.

Another thing, all those shiny HDTVs that I know most of you have, how do you feel when I tell you that the 60-120hz refresh rate along with about 40% of the pixels aren't being used by the machines you have connected to them. With average framerates at about 30 and resolutions of 720p, our consoles aren't even HD systems anymore.

New consoles plox.

Hey Ubisoft, you realize the global economy isn't in the best shape? Why don't you make due with the tools you have now, I don't have the cash or want for a whole new console.

Maybe start putting more games out and then decide this console generation is getting stale Ubisoft!

Seriously what games have Ubisoft brought to the table that were really good? Far Cry 2 and assasins creed? Also what happend to that Ghost Recon game, you know the one that looked really good? Also who are you to say that the next console generation should come, I think the consumers will get the most backlash (financially) about this, wait you don't care about your consumers, only $$$/rant

Hey look everyone, an out-of-touch developer/publisher! Who knew?! Lets all run out and buy a $700 console so Ubisoft doesn't have to find creative ways to make their games look better on the current tech!!

The PS3 and Xbox easily have 4-6 more years of life and they haven't even been pushed to their limits yet.

Valve didn't cut the maps apart just because of the consoles, they can do that separately just fine without affecting the PC version because Valve isn't a big console whore.
Portal 2 was a cross platform game and to work had to work with the lowest common denominator. Thus Portal 2 could not and did not take any advantage of modern hardware, instead was developed to work on 2005 hardware. While my framerate is better (and I can use a mouse!), i'm still playing a game that is effectively 6 years old in terms of capabilities and features.

Granted there are minor differences but the point remains. Development is being held seriously back by the age of current hardware and while it's understandable (since PC gaming is on its way out) that developers will develop for the most profitable platforms, it's so frustrating that a game like Skyrim which will come out this November, 6 months from now, will be developed for 6 year old hardware. Developers have had to develop the game which isn't even released yet for old hardware, using the most capabilities of an old system instead of being able to take advantage of the major advances since 2005. Instead of being the best it could possibly have been it's only able to be the best the old technology allows.

In regard to Crysis 2, it's a linear CoD clone with a nanosuit and old graphics. It doesn't come close to the original which pushed every boundary and innovated and is still relevant today *because* of that. Crytek wimped out or sold out. If it's the former, shame on them. If its the latter, I can sympathise even if I don't have to like the forgettable and bland sequel I regretfully paid full price for. Ironically, though I have since bought the original on Steam, on release (before Steam) I obtained it thru nefarious means which was so widespread for such a hot game that it was one of the main reasons Crytek decided to develop cross-platform. In this way perhaps, I'm part of the very reason Crysis 2 sucked like it did and that PC gaming is suffering.

Ubisoft is spot on that developers need new hardware to work on so they can innovate, push boundaries and make better, more creative and immersive games. And while I'm wishing, I want to play PC games on my PC, not console ports...that last really is wishful thinking though.

Why doesn't Ubisoft release some new hardware, if they're in such a hurry?

(That's a rhetorical question. I'm very aware of why Ubisoft doesn't bring out new hardware. I'm simply pointing out the hypocrisy of telling someone else to do something you're not willing to do yourself.)

Unless the next gen of consoles is somekind of full immersion system then hold on to them, the ones we have now have got enough horse power.

Who cares if they're working on new consoles. Yes these consoles still have a lot of life left in them, but they probably need to have at least a concept in mind in case the new Nintendo consoles starts stealing more of the market. That being said, the nintendo console will probably be released first since it will almost certainly be playable at E3 this year, and even that isn't coming out until late 2012.

Hey Ubi start pushing the current gen consoles to the limits and then we'll talk.
have you seen the graphics on the assassins creed games they are the best ive seen on the unreal engine hell id say they are better than gears of war
So? the next console gen should be more than shinier graphics. We have the Move and Kinect and we are still only getting the same games year after year. I honestly do not believe we need a shiner next gen AC when there is still so much untapped potential this gen has. Especially when you factor in how long it takes devs to get thier heads around a new console and really start utilizing it. Look at most of the year 1 console games and compare them to today's games.

I think we're starting to see the end of what the current generation is capable off. Just look at BF3 and Crysis 2. BF3 will only have half the players on consoles than PC, and Crysis 2 almost felt like a step backwards from Crysis.
Most of today's console games are running at a resolution even lower than 720p (just upscaled and blurred) capped at 30FPS. So much for "HD graphics". In addition Kinect and 3D is eating up more processing and graphics power on their respective consoles. 3D games look worse than in 2D due to the even lower resolution that gets upscaled.

I like my Xbox 360 very much, is been a loyal trooper and friend throughout the years. Current generation consoles still have many years left in them.

Read a ton of replies, and none said "Good idea!".
And everyone is right, this generation has plenty of years left.

The PS3 can even do gimmicky real 3D, for which like 0.01 % of players have a usable TV at the moment! Soooo... go make innovative gamePLAY or start some awesome new IPs and shut up, Ubisoft? Pretty please!

No thank you. When the PS3 and 360 both launched, they cost a small fortune. I dread to think what the next gen will cost. If game developers feel their games are getting stale, perhaps it's time to take a good look and your company and go, "How can we change that?" Anyone remember when God of War came out? You know, that PS2 game? That came out at the end of the PS2's lifespan? And completely blew people out of the water? Stuff like that needs to happen more.

it just doesn't make sense to release a new console during a recession here in the states.
Complete falsity told be Right-wingers who want to discredit the Democrats in any way they can, even if the only way they can is by delivering half-truths and card stacking to get the idiot general public on their side. Right now, if you took Economics and paid attention to the economy, we are on a huge upswing.

OT: I agree with you on your other points. I would be exited for a new console generation in a few years, but not right now. Ubisoft is just mad that the people who were gullible enough to buy a Wii have stopped buying their shovelware, and that people who own a 360/PS3 and its respective motion device are more likely to be educated about what a good game is, and what obvious shovelware is compared to many of the Wii owners. Proof? Look at Ubi's launch line up for the 3DS. Shovelware and Re-hashes.

The consoles have only recently gotten to the point when they're making money, and developers haven't yet reached the point where they are maximizing the capabilities of the consoles themselves when it comes to graphics. So...we're looking at four years before the games get to the point where they can utilize the hardware of a new generation, while most games and developers haven't even managed to utilize the full capabilities of the consoles...

So another one to two years for new console development, another four or five before games can utilize those capabilities? So...ballpark of 2016-2020 for the optimum capabilities of a next gen when they still haven't gotten to the point where they can use everything on this one? Several years where the manufacturers are taking a LOSS on sales even when they're charging exorbitantly high costs for people purchase them?

I think the next consoles should be cartridge based. Think about it. We can fit 16 GB on a device the size of my thumb, so something about the size of an N64 cartridge could hold 80GB I think. Maybe more.

And cost $80 just for the physical media.

I get what he means though...it'd be great to have games on a device that isn't limited to how fast a cheap disk can spin.
