And here I thought Assassins Creed 4 was a pirate themed Assassins Creed 3 spin-off with a lot more naval combat...

Isn't that like making a Ninja-Themed Ninja Gaiden spin-off? Or a Soldier-Themed Call of Duty spin-off?

Anyways, it would be great if they ditch the AC name and go full new IP so they can finally do something different for a change.
Assassin's Creed without the Assassin's Creed storyline would be quite fun, yes.

So the most well received feature of Ass Creed 3 were the naval battles, and they decided to make a pirate-themed game based on that.

Now they're telling us the most well received feature of Ass Creed 4 were the naval battles, and they're considering a pirate themed game based on that.

Are Ubisoft trapped in pirate Groundhog Day or something?

Next thing you know, they'll start making a Master Chief-themed Halo spinoff.

People need to start bombarding ubisoft with suggestions to play Sid Meier's Pirates and go from there.
Absolutely 100% this. Sid Meier's Pirates is one of my favorite games of all time, but if it could perhaps get a modern touch up with all kinds of new features and an imporved visual design, I'd be all for it.

As for what to do with the modern-day narrative that has hovered over all the proceedings, I think Assassin's Creed 4 came the closest to getting it right. It's not that it has to go away completely, but I feel it's a lot better pushed to the side, and I found the new first-person perspective with a silent protagonist to be suprisingly immersive.

Personally, I actually think there's a lot of comedic ground that could be covered with it. If you take the time to read the documents you find around Abstergo you can come across some pretty funny, and occasionally insightful, meta-commentary on the, sometimes hilariously, profit driven AAA game industry and on conspiracy theories and theorists themselves. I don't know about anyone else, but I found the casual racism expressed when describing the marketability of Ratohnhake:ton as a leading man to be quite funny. I'm not saying it has to go into full-spoof mode, but I think it would benefit greatly from not taking itself so seriously. Perhaps... it could even explore the possibility that the Assassin's and the Templars are equally bloated, antiquated, and petty, organizations? They've held this huge vague conflict over our head for about 6 years and it's been explored in games, comic books, graphic novels, regular novels, animation, films, and... it's gone precisely FUCKING NOWHERE in that entire time. You'd think at some point, roughly during the time spanning from the dominance of the mighty Ottoman Empire and the Turks all the way into the near future, someone would go: 'wait, what the hell are we actually doing again?' Once again, I'll say that Assassin's Creed 4 handled an aspect of the series, in this case the huge conflict between these two parties, the best because of Edward Kenway's 'fuck you, got mine' attitude and his blatant disregard for the both of them for a vast majority of the game. To me, that's damn cool. And, even though he does eventually join the Assassin's, he comes into it naturally. He hits rock bottom, and actually discovers the folly of his ways. He's doesn't just jump head first into being a pawn for the squabble between these two forces.

Seriously, Ubisoft, seriously. 'Defiance' as a mood. EXPLORE IT!
Sid Meier's Pirates, Fun game in its time for sure.(c64 and win)

Altough it had it's issues, the ballroom dance was funny the first time. (not realy waiting to do that again)
And the strategy part was underutilized.(as i recall only used once)

But the pirate stuff was rock solid.

I'm sick of everyone saying "Oh, they should model it off of Sid Meyer's Pirates! Oh, they should model it off Seven Seas! Oh, they should model it off of Other Game That I Feel Really Nostalgic About And Really Want To Have Rebooted!"

Guys, this is U-Soft's chance to show that they can still make good new IPs that are enjoyable. With a game that's a new IP, but takes the naval battle and perhaps combat mechanics from AC4, they could actually have a really freaking fun game.

The naval combat (the important part) was well refined and as a result was one of the most fun parts of the game. Here is U-Soft's chance to take something they made that was good that was ruined by a horrid plotline, and turn it into something awesome. Something that doesn't build off of someone else's work. I think most people would agree that if it wasn't for the Assassins vs Templars plotline, AC4 would have been an awesome game. (Although Edward's "I really don't give a shit either way" view of the conflict made the plot slightly more bearable)

Saying that if U-Soft wants to make a pirate game, they should base it off of someone else's work, is just wrong. It's like if a kid comes up to you with an idea for a science project based of some work he did earlier that was decent but bland, and telling him to do his project but to not use his own work. It's basically saying "I like the concept, but if you're going to be the one to do it, at least spare me the thought of it being ALL your own work".

I hate it when gamers do that. It's hypocritical. We complain about how many games these days are just the same shit over and over again, and then when a company wants to do something awesome, we beg for them to make it exactly like something already out there. This is why we have a million clones of Call of Duty, and why we have barely any games that are created for the sole purpose of fun, instead of for profit. If you're going to take the risk to make a game because you think it's fun, it's discouraging when you hear people say that the idea is okay as long as you aren't basing it off of your own hard work.

Sorry for the rant, it's just that I've seen a lot of this during the past month and a half and it's really pissing me off more than it should.

Ok so I've been a die hard creed fan since the beginning. I have to honestly say that the quality of the games have gone down. Im not talking the visual effects I'm talking game play. Give me some elaborate hidden templar or assassin cave that I have to figure out how to get to the end of it in fact give me 16 of them not some lame excuse of a mayan bullshit line up the shapes. I'll admit that creed 4 was a definite improvement of 3 but over all as a series what happened? Revelations was the beginning of this with the lack of caves templar huts beautiful cathedrals you had to maze thru that if your an assassins creed fan you know what I'm talking about. Although they still kept up with the gear in Revelations still had the gear up grades from vendors and ended up looking bad ass for all the time you had to put into getting it. I miss Ezio and the great story line that was so intriguing I'd forget to eat cause I couldn't put down the controller. Maybe I'm being to harsh I don't know but go back to some of the things that made AC a great game not some cheap spin off that people play till the campaign is over and really don't have the need to play again. This is coming from someone to this day has to unlock everything in the game cause I'm a nerd but I remember when it was dope to get a set of gear that you looked at and was like damn thats cool.
