Ubisoft Fires Assassin's Creed Creator

Patrice Desilets claims he was fired by Ubisoft, only a few months after coming back to the company following previous employer THQ's collapse.

Welcoming Patrice Desilets spectacular collapse [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122701-Assassins-Creed-Director-Returns-to-Ubisoft] was a show of compassion for the man who created the first two Assassin's Creed games, spawning a franchise that would go on to make billions of dollars for the company. But, turning around and firing the guy, telling everyone he left of his own accord, is a pretty big jerk move and shows that Ubisoft's compassion only runs skin deep.

When THQ went under, Ubisoft purchased the studio that Desilets was leading, as well as the game they were working on - something called 1666. "Unfortunately, since the acquisition [of THQ Montreal], the good faith discussions between Patrice and Ubisoft aimed at aligning Patrice's and the studio's visions have been inconclusive," reads a statement by Ubisoft. "As a result, Patrice has left the studio. Our priorities remain with the teams already hard at work on projects in development."

But Desilets tells a different story, claiming that "Contrary to any statements made earlier today, this morning I was terminated by Ubisoft. I was notified of this termination in person, handed a termination notice and was unceremoniously escorted out of the building by two guards without being able to say goodbye to my team or collect my personal belongings."

"This was not my decision," he added. "Ubisoft's actions are baseless and without merit. I intend to fight Ubisoft vigorously for my rights, for my team and for my game." As for 1666, Ubisoft have been pretty tight-liped about what they plan to do with it, and details of the game itself have been pretty sparse. Could it be another alternate history action game? A historically accurate simulator? A game starring the dyslexic devil? We'll have to wait to see if Desilets can wrangle the rights away from Ubisoft's clutches to find out.

Pretty much my reaction to them right now... What could they gain from this? Nothing but hate, I say.

What are your views, guys and gals?

Here's an interesting comment I found on RPS...

? So his game he was making for THQ was called 1666. Which was a golden year for piracy in the Antilles, not to mention the year of the Great London Fire and the year the Great Plague both peaked and ended. Piracy, huh? Not unlike Ubi?s newest AssCreed title. THQ filed for bankruptcy in December of last year, and in January of this year UbiSoft bought the branch of THQ that Patrice worked for, THQ Montreal. In February of this year, UbiSoft announced AssCreed 4 and started sending out all the piracy-themed hints. Now Patrice?s been fired, according to UbiSoft for what amount to irreconcilable differences.

Possibly a coincidence.

Sounds like there is a lot more to this story than whats being said, you don't just have an employee escorted away by security and say they left by their own accord. Wonder if anyone at Ubi is going to clarify as to what really went on here.

Most Inhouse employees, when fired, will be escorted out by security in order to protect company secrets. Way too easy to take a few files out on a flashdrive.

This, escorting him off the premises wasn't a dick move. Whatever came before then may have been but in any industry with secrets, IP or tech laying around its common to be escorted off the premises.

My last place of employment did it no matter how amicable the parting of ways and they had to be searched as they left too (everyone was searched leaving).

Damn Ubisoft. It seems that the guy was no longer needed right? I mean is not like he created a franchise that you have been milking for the last 5 years and is not like you said "very pleased to welcome Patrice to Ubisoft again".

Anyway I think there is more to this story and I would like to hear it.

This is a pretty common thing, you either go along with the direction of the new company or you are out on your ass.

So basically, they either wanted to tear 1666 apart and make it dissapear of the face of the earth or take all the good parts and putting them in AC4. This guy wouldn't let them and they sacked him.

What a bunch of assholes. If this is indeed the story then I hope karma comes around and kicks their teeth out for this.

Really don't know if we will ever hear the entire story, but the conclusion the current information is pointing to sounds like Ubisoft is being rather unscrupulous and this has nothing to do with him being escorted out of the building. Well, he could always give kickstarter a shot: I'm sure he'll get support for whatever he chooses to make even if Ubisoft pulled the rug out from under him.

Also, this might explain why I enjoyed the first AC and none of the others...

Makes me happy I haven't bought a Ubisoft game in years.

I wonder if they saw EA winning all these accolades for being a shit company and got jealous.

That's a dog act, what did he do? Steal from them?
He quit the company after I think AC: Brotherhood. Now that he was bought out, they fired him for a betrayal of "loyalty", I'm guessing.

given that the guy technically implanted them with a money-shitting intestine
he basically would have to do something real fierce to them for ubi to fire him
