I sure as hell aren't. I cant afford to shell out £300 on a new console. I'd rather stick with the old ones for a while longer.

There's a couple things that always come up in these discussions that I disagree with:

1. "Graphics are good enough now. Graphics don't matter, I don't need MOAR TEXTURES". Gameplay trumps graphics, sure. You can't make a bad game good by using more triangles. But better graphics make a game better. I can't understand how someone could claim that the console version of Skyrim is just as good as the PC version, unless you just really, really love the lore only or something.

Artists work really hard creating interesting HD textures that then get compressed down to a blur. Better graphics increases the possiblities for creativity. Would anyone seroiusly argue that Film hasn't benefited from color and better film techniques? Sure, there are amazing black and white movies. But there are also many, many amazing modern films that simply could not have been created without these new techniques. Is anyone clamoring for a return to SDTV? The idea is just crazy.
That's basically what you get with the compressed textures on a current console though.

2. Power just means better graphics. Sure, a new console generation will mean better graphics, but that's not all that more powerful processors can deliver. Games like Left 4 Dead were simply impossible to make before. The power wasn't there to model that many individual units. Games like Total War benefit from the ability to process larger and larger numbers of actors on the screen. Better AI can be developed with more power, or similar AI but running on more actors. Would anyone really argue that having accurate physics didn't change how games were created? That's certainly opened up new possiblities for games. There are kinds of things that could better be represented in games through better simulation. This discussion always involved gameplay over graphics, but more power means you can also have more gameplay since things that couldn't be processed before can now. Wonder why Minecraft* didn't exist 20 years ago? Because it would have been impossible to make.

However, the only problem here is that the new consoles probably aren't pushing things forward enough. I'll be really glad when they are out and developers start using them. That'll make it ok for the PC games to push forward that much more. But, it really doesn't look like the new consoles will have the power to really make huge changes. But, anything's better than languishing with the old consoles.

Oh, BTW, I've been gaming since the Atari and I'll often play older games.

* Better graphics doesn't mean more realistic, and some games use a particular aesthetic that couldn't be improves with better graphics like Minecraft. However, even something like Minecraft is better with more power. You can see farther and you can add more stuff to the game.

I'm not hungry for the next generation, in fact I've spend most of this one pinning for the days of the last one. Mostly because that was the last time it seemed that Publishers, Developers and the Industry in general had a soul. Apparently I'm in the minority though so that doesn't seem to be worth much.
I feel the same way. I miss the time when devs/publishers at least pretended to care about their customers. Now they just do whatever they want, and then when people complain, they say "Shut the hell up. You don't matter, because there's a whole herd of idiots who will buy our shitty games/products anyway."
I miss people having some self-respect :(

I'm sure not "starving" for the next gen. In fact, I've been pretty apathetic towards all the announcements. I'm not feeling that excitement that I had when the PS3 was coming out. Nothing has really stood out to catch my interest.

I'm not. My 3DS, PS3, Xbox360, PSP, and my PS2 are still keeping me well fed, thank you. The food is quite good.

Yup! I just love to pay a few hundred dollars to buy a piece of marketing technology that will have none-to-few good games on it for a while, isn't backwards compatible, and costs more to develop on, thus making game prices go up, less chances to be taken by devs, and causing more devs to go out of business! Can't wait!

I haven´t cared for any coming releases in about a year (with the exception of Armikrog) so i can´t say i´m that excited about a new generation, actually i´m not even sure if i care enough to invest any money in a new system. I´m content with what i got as there are still plenty of games i need to try that doesn´t require me to buy an expensive new machine.

It depends on what they're going to do with the power.
I was looking forward to the current gen when it started. One of the things I was looking forward to most was Burnout crash junctions with more cars and bigger explosions. Then Burnout Paradise came out and it didn't even have crash junctions.
I'm currently digging (still, I got it when it came out) Borderlands 2 and I would love for Borderlands 3 to have even more enemies running at me for me to shred with my orange guns without my system slowing down to a crawl.

I think im gonna set this one out for a year or two. If they are still developing great titles on 360/PS3, then i am content to stick with current gen. Not like developers are going to ignore current gen for atleast another year. To many consumers for games on current gen. Atleast after a year all the good next gen games will start being released and there will be a fun back catalogue to delve into. That is, if i bother getting a next gen console....I think every new gen seems less over whelming than the last. Roll on E3, i want to see what they have to offer.

Yeah I'm starving. For a nice hot chicken parm sandwich. Yeah, I can really go for that right now.

Ohhh you mean next gen gaming? Um.. nope. Still have a back log last I checked. Ohhh I want to SHARE my gaming experiences via social media integrated into a console you say? Umm. no I don't. Really. I don't give a rat's ass. You know what? Why don't you guys stop telling us what we want and actually start giving us what we want. Like I dunno, maybe good games.

Consumerism fail.

Forgot about the crash junctions, had lots of fun with loads. Maybe they could make that as a digital download game they could make for a sell for cheap on xboxlive/psn? Best thing i loved about it was my baby brother could play it and do really well. :)

Yes, I'm starving. Starving for more quality games and more quality experiences. I'm not starving for a next console generation which will, in turn, leave me starving for money after I spend all of it on a meager hardware update which enables me to play more of the same old crap and keep spending more money on subscriptions, DLC and other online components which will, in turn, guess what!?

And since when does self-expression mean sharing dozens of screenshots and videos on Facebook or whatever the fanciful new features of the mod-closed, creativity-suppressing plastic boxes are?

no ubisoft, I'm not 'starving' for the next generation, none of you have made much of anything worth while with THIS generation i've little to no hope the next will be anything other then more of the same.

Sigh, I'd rather not have a new generation of consoles, to be honest it only really seems like that developers are getting used to pulling out of the most the machines we have now, plus its just more money I'd need to spend that I don't have.

Uhh, Not so much starving for next gen, more starving for new or interesting games, and developers are now making games for the next gen consoles so nothing big is coming out until then. Though I will say this generation is actually starting to show its age.

But then the glorious PC gaming master race are like "No! The filthy consoles are holding us back!", and therefore they want shinier graphics and everything to be more expensive, just so they can justify their OTT gaming rigs.
The hilarious thing is that all of the self-proclaimed 'PC gamers' in this thread are saying the opposite. They don't seem to realize that with new console hardware, the standard of what a game can do would likely skyrocket considering how horrifically outdated the PS3 and Xbox 360 are in hardware terms.

Games are still primarily made for consoles. Better consoles with architecture closer to that of a PC means better PC ports and a lot more that developers would be able to do in the base game. No more shitty optimization in games that look like they were made in 2006 and terrible implementation of DirectX 11, (hopefully) no more corridor games that are trying to compensate for how little RAM and GPU power they can utilize, no more textures that look worse than some N64 games because they're trying to be hyper-realistic but have to compress everything so it can actually run at a semi-playable framerate without making the 512 MB of RAM explode.

Well, obviously we would still get those from incompetent developers, small companies, or Call of Duty, but it wouldn't be the average anymore.

I probably won't get a PS4 until a few years down the line, but I'm planning on upgrading the old PC when I have the money and I'm certainly ready for them to bring on the new tide. Just looking at what some developers can do with the hardware they've already got, I'm excited to see what they can do when they're not limited by stuff that was originally created practically a decade ago.

"There is a recession on, people have no money, people can barely afford games from second hand stores, lets release some more machinery for £400 and make the old machinery defunct." Seems to be the policy of the gaming corporations these days

I think Lord British said it best on a podcast I heard a little while ago.

He basically said that games go in a cycle, beginning at a new console generation. The beginning of the generation brings us the same old tired ideas in a shiny coat of paint.

Personally I think Ubisoft want the new generation mainly for this reason.
