Out of all people (consumers included), I think this guy has the hardest boner for next gen.

I'm just 'meh'.

I'll buy PS4 when time is right.

I'm "starving" for good games. I don't care what they come out for. This gen, next gen, last gen...Make them good and I will buy them.

It depends on what they're going to do with the power.
I was looking forward to the current gen when it started. One of the things I was looking forward to most was Burnout crash junctions with more cars and bigger explosions. Then Burnout Paradise came out and it didn't even have crash junctions.
Forgot about the crash junctions, had lots of fun with loads. Maybe they could make that as a digital download game they could make for a sell for cheap on xboxlive/psn? Best thing i loved about it was my baby brother could play it and do really well. :)
And they actually did that but it ended up being really crappy: overhead, cartoony, something you would expect to play for free on your phone. I think you can download a demo for it.

What exactly am I meant to be starving for? Slightly improved graphics and some social features I'd really rather not have?

I've been following this shit since the SNES release, and I have to say that this is the most apathetic I have ever seen a group of gamers about a new generation. It's especially strange, considering that this one has gone on too long. That extra power won't just boost graphics guys, we're at a point of diminishing returns there. The power will give us larger levels, more complicated AI, more NPCs/objects on screen at once, farther draw distance, more sophisticated battle/fighting systems, etc.

Though if I were a gambling man, I'd say the apathy is really the result of gamers being pushed to the breaking point by publisher nonsense. We have more "advocates" like Jim Sterling than ever before, and we've seen more shady business practices (and awareness of those practices) than ever before. I think people are more scared of what new tools we're meant to bend over for than apathetic about the increase in power and new games.

I think Lord British said it best on a podcast I heard a little while ago.

He basically said that games go in a cycle, beginning at a new console generation. The beginning of the generation brings us the same old tired ideas in a shiny coat of paint.

Personally I think Ubisoft want the new generation mainly for this reason.
I'm inclined to agree with that actually. The paint is starting to chip off on this generation of games and I want it to feel fresh again. I'm a simple man with simple wants I guess

Gamers are hungry for good games.

Developers are hungry for any way possible to raise the price on games.

I read that people judge others based on how "cold" and how "warm" you are. People want to appear cold so they'll be respected and appear intelligent. As such, we associate people who are warm and nice with people who are stupid

This apathy is just a result of people thinking they'll appear smarter and competent if they act jaded and cynical and anyone who's happy must be an idiot. That's my theory anyway

I believe it was Ralph Wiggim who said "fun toys are fun" and who can argue with that?

I'm amazed at how contrarian people are determined to be.

"We're at the tail end of what's already the longest console generation by a long shot. The technology in these consoles is simply very, very outdated. We could potentially create much better games on new consoles, and that would also unchain PC games from being shackled to such old limits. It could also potentially put some fresh energy into the industry, as it would create a fresh burst of competition."

HOW DARE YOU IMPLY THAT SEVEN YEARS IS A LONG TIME FOR A CONSOLE GENERATION?!

Also, the Captcha asked me "what is your quest". I answered with "to seek the holy grail", and it told me I was wrong. :(

You've got a valid point there, and I'm sure it applies to at least some of the detractors. Also, this site more than others suffers from "Yahtzee Mindset" (due to his presence here). Basically, if you assume upcoming things will be shit, then you'll be pleasantly surprised if in fact it isn't. Inversely, assuming that the new thing is good can only serve to disappoint you if in fact it is shit. Add equal parts desire to appear "edgy" and funny as a result of that edginess, bake at 350, and watch absolutely nothing happen because nobody here really knows each other and nothing was accomplished (accidental edginess from myself, there).

I really don't care about the next generation except as a means of getting more games, because no-one's going to be developing for current gen. I am pretty much happy with the PS3. It's the games people are wanting, and I'm not saying that nothing decent has come out, only that it's been winding down a bit for a while in anticipation of next gen.

What I find funny though is that publishers like Ubisoft do things that gamers find abhorrent, and then suggest that people would love more opportunities to throw money at them. The PS4 isn't going to fix linearity in Assassin's Creed and it's not going to make uPlay more popular either.

Oh and also, fuck social media. And especially pertaining to that, fuck expecting higher revenue out of it. Firstly, I want social media to be completely optional, because I don't want to use it. I will make a fake Facebook account to upload screenshots or something if I must, but I do not want ANY social bullshit occurring. But secondly, how do they expect to make money out of social features? The whole thing makes me apprehensive.

I'm quite happy with my Xbox 360. I can't say I'm hungry for the next generation at all. If anything I'd be more inclined to buy a PS3.

Guillemot sounds like a walking, talking marketing bible blurb.

I would like for a system to not be so anaemic and pigeon chested that everything has to come in the shape of a well-laid out tunnel or revolving around frequent and seemingly endless elevator rides from hell.

Apart from that - suck it, Guillemot. That's what I really want.

Is it just me or are the only ones pushing for the next generation of consoles the publishers? Most normal people couldn't give a crap about it (if the threads here are to be believed to be representative).

I'm not starving to any next gen.

What I'm starving for are not half arsed ports and excuses because the hardware of the current gen consoles are 7-8 years old and they can't update the game for PC standards.

So, in a strange way, I am looking forward for those new consoles to come out so we PC gamers can get proper games made, because the structure of the new consoles are pretty much made from PC hardware.
