Ubisoft to Expand into Animation, Television

Publishing giant Ubisoft is set to expand into animation and CGI, its CEO said.

"Our goal is to create a studio that will be very high quality, our goal is to try to get to the level of quality of Peter Jackson's Weta studio," Yves Guillemot, the company CEO, said in a recent interview.

The Quebec branch will work on animation, CGI and will continue its efforts in the department of 3-D video games, of which James Cameron's Avatar will be the first example.

Film production, however, will be handled by other companies, which will release their films concurrently with Ubisoft's gaming products.

"We don't need to be always making the movie but what we have to do is make sure that what's necessary for our games is done close to us so we can reuse assets," Guillemot explained.

The CEO said Ubisoft is also summing up prospects for future sports titles and has even started work on a television series based on one of its properties.
