UK Culture Department Distances Itself From Medal of Honor Outrage

The Defense Secretary may not like Medal of Honor, but the UK government doesn't want you to think that that is its official policy.

British defense secretary Liam Fox didn't make himself many friends among gamers [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102952-UK-Defense-Secretary-Calls-for-Medal-of-Honor-Ban] yesterday when he called Medal of Honor "disgusting" and "un-British" for allowing players to take on the role of the Taliban in the game's multiplayer. But the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said that it was just Fox's personal view and should not be considered an official government position.

A DCMS spokesperson said that it could understand why Fox might be upset - as any reasonable person could - but that the UK had a rating system exactly for this purpose, and the game had been classified as being only suitable for adults. The spokesperson said that the choice as to whether to buy the game or not would rest with the consumer, not with the retailer, as Fox wanted.

It's not hard to see why the game would upset people; this won't be the last heat Medal of Honor takes before its release, and it's not going to just go away when the game comes out. It's heartening, however, to see that the government's position is that adults should be allowed to choose for themselves. Medal of Honor is scheduled for release on October 12th.

Also EA is apparently "preparing a statement" aimed what are supposedly inaccurate comments. My guess it's aimed at Fox's lack of distinction between single and multiplayer given the later hardly has any ideological baring or context.

I do think that its a bit unsensetive, and that the government should take a more official sensitive stance about it, but at the end of the day, veterans of WW2 are still alive, and almost everyone will have lost someone in that war, and there are loads of games about that one.
im still wondering why there isnt a faulklands conflict game?

EDIT: you can stop quoting me now

So no war between the US and UK over EA corrupting British youth?

Can we at least have a civil war then? :c

I can sort of see why this issue is getting peoples goats, remember all the fuss over 6 Days in Fallujah? I'm amazed that they went back to basing a shooter on current conflicts knowing what the outcry was last time.

I guess its even worse over a topic which people are so very passionate about at the moment.

Surely it's up to the British people to determine what's 'un-British' rather than some arsehole who has never played a game in their life.

One thing I do like about EA(after criticising them in the thread on them seeking publishing rights for Portal 2) is that when ignorant public figures with prominent platforms make inaccurate comments; they don't let matters rest. They're rather good at humiliating people that deserve to be humiliated and I look forward to their statement.

I still think it's hilarious that of all the British people to whinge about it, it would be a man named Fox.

Exactly. Maybe if Fox knew a thing about the difference between the Single-Player Campaign and Multiplayer then he wouldn't be so one-sided.

Well it was that or Labour. Besides, before the election the lib dems looked like they would do much better than they eventually did.

I'm finding it difficult to see why people are upset.

His idea that we should blindly support a war and ignore the right to individual freedoms is "un-British".
