UK Housewives Live Online

The Chinese spend 44% of their leisure time online, but are pwned by UK housewives with 47%.

In the study by global marketing group TNS [http://www.tnsglobal.com/] over 27,000 people in 16 countries were asked about their 'net habits, and although the UK ranked a respectable 28%, 2% lower than the US, and 1% lower than Australia, UK housewives dominated the overall results.

This skew towards the housewife was also matched in the States, where the average 'net usage of 30% leapt up to 37% with American moms. Amazingly, only 34% of the US considers the internet 'very important' in their work life.

The Germans led in real life meetings of 'net friends: nearly 76% have met someone that they only talked to online, whilst the Chinese had one of their lowest scores of 40%.

Back in the UK, there are some surprises though. Students only spend 37% of their time online and the unemployed spend a meager 32%.

Lowest on the list are the Scandinavian countries, who only donate 14% of their time on average to "logging on."

The average chance of meeting someone in real-life that you became friends with on the 'net is 40%, so whilst we are spending a lot more time plugged in, we haven't let it interfere with our social life. That's got to be a good thing.

The boundaries of friendship travel far and wide as well, with an average 17 friends, 23% will be American, 17% Australian and 10% Canadian.

And second to friends for trusted information? Online news sites (Like this one, *cough*) with 40% of people saying they were a "highly trusted" medium. You can read the entire report [http://www.tnsglobal.com/_assets/files/TNS_Market_Research_Digital_World_Digital_Life.pdf] if you want the entire run down.

"pwned" is not a valid word for beating somebody with a mere 3% unless the previously established number was widely boasted about.

Basically it's saying that "Not now dear I'm on the computer," has replaced "Not now dear I have a headache,"

Progress, gotta love it.

Hardly surprising though. If I was a middle aged housewife, I would be bored out of my skull, and would turn to the net for entertainment / my illicit cyber affair.

Sounds right to me.

Then again, I'm a housewife/mommy/writer who spends 40 hours a week online, so...

Actually, the correct phrase is, "Not now, dear...Someone is WRONG on the INTERNET [http://xkcd.com/386/]."

That's right, guys. Every time you troll a message board, some other dude doesn't get laid.

If they care enough about message board trolling, odds are they wouldn't get laid anyway (ba-zing!).

Completely seconded. Right now I'm on summer vacation but the weather's been terrible the last two days, so I'm spending half of my time on the computer, and the other half bowshooting. Dull, dull day.

That's awesome, but my only question is... why on earth would you choose Princess Peach as your avatar? A fellow called Ben Croshaw once described her as "Mario's hateful, emotionally retarded ball-and-chain"... admittedly, he's not the kindest man on earth, but she's not exactly an inspirational character or role model, now, is she?

Still, she is an iconic female character in gaming, even if not the most appropriate one in the main Mario games. Still, she's quite the equal-opportunist in the Sports and other titles of the franchise, so I'm not complaining if you do associate with her, just find it amusing given that her typical role is "kidnapped MacGuffin".

This can't be right... UK housewives are too busy campaigning against the internet, violence in video games and toy guns..

I chose my avatar ironically.

Also, I threw it up there intending to replace it with a decent one later, and never got round to it.

I've met a number of interesting women online, who are also married, so I'm not at all surprised, considering the number of things the net is used for now. Hell, my mum uses it for eBay and geneaology stuffs.
