Eh, death threats are one thing, I really would not want to see this carrying over into all other "e-bullying". I mean, I understand there are some fairly thin-skinned people out there, but it's the internet. Putting up with trolls is part of the gig, and if you don't like it, maybe the net isn't the place for you. But, death threats, for the most part, should be taken seriously, unless in the middle of playing a videogame.

Unless that bugs people too much, or at least until it offends the right person.

Okay, I'm going to play devils advocate here, and that's really hard to do because I love the verdict of this case oh so very much. So here goes.

For all you people that think this kind of thing needs to spread like ebola in a blood bank, consider this: Once you can arrest people for what they post on the internet, you can arrest people for just about anything. Arrest them for what site they visit, arrest them for pictures they have on their social sites. Arrest them for the contacts they keep online. THe internet is quite possibly the last free realm of free speech and expression. We no longer have it in the real world due to the onset of politically correct speech and discrimination laws. For example, if a person from the UK were to come to the US and walk up to a man saying "I'm looking for a fag.", he could be dropped, booked, and jailed for sexual assault just on what he said. Extreme, yes, but just oh so possible when you line up a police officer and a judge who would just love to nail a guy for appearing to be gay. The internet is a safe haven where you can say whatever you want to, and so can everyone else. If I don't like what you say, I can just scroll on down, and if you don't like this post, so can you. However, in this instance of "cyber-bullying", I think it comes down to what someone else said earlier:

"Hey, there's that girl who's viciously bullied me for the last 4 years... *clicks add*"

Stupid girl...
Just as much as this "cyber-bully" is to blame, there is also personal responsability to consider. We all dealt with bullys in school; either you clocked them in the head and knocked them down a peg and then dealt with the teacher, or you ignored them and the situation resolved itself when they got bored. This isn't any different, except it's a lot easier and more harmless to ignore them.

There's my two cents.
Actualy, im going to have to agree with you one that. Dispite her being arrested is a good thing, if the police knucle down on the internet all will be lost.

Well, she deserves her punishment.

However, I'm not sure about that photo...She looks a bit like Lund from Doomsday Arcade...Or is it me?
Its funny and insulting. Sorry Lund (Who'm I kidding he won't read this).

Good, she looks like a cow and was bullying a little kid.
Maybe someone will send 300 PMs. I don't want to insult him in any way. I just thought they looked a tiny bit similar.

I agree with a lot of you, this is good because there are so many people that ruin the world for us via internet and now they can be punished for it (^_^)

You know, I was bullied in grade school. I have dealt with a lot of people who harrassed me because of my social shortcomings all my life. I think people like that are tragic, almost parasitic, but imprisoning them will only cause them to become criminals. Mandate counselling, heck, give her community service. Don't perpetuate the cycle by punishing someone for lack of empathy by showing them a lack of empathy.

Beyond this, if someone you know is "harrassing" you over the internet, talk to them face to face, tell them to knock it off, if they don't either bring the law into it or knock their teeth in. If someone you don't know is picking on you over the internet, grow a pair, they don't even know you, their words are less than meaningless.

Houghton claimed that she wrote the messages late at night while drunk and had no memory of it
Good excuse, next I'll say that I couldn't have robbed that bank because I was murdering a random pedestrian at the time.
Edit: Although I'm not sure if people are allowed to drink at this age in the UK.

Good, maybe this will help cut down on random people telling me that they're going to "hunt me down, rape my mom and then kill me."

Mostly it's little kids saying that, so I don't think they can jail them. Darn it.
if only... the world would be a far better place...

It is a half decent use of the court's time when not provoked. As you even said yourself the other girl kicked in her door beat her up then Emily keeps her in her facebook. Which leads to the girl harrassing her online through facebook. Sorry that is a fail in the sympathy dept. If she had taken reasonable measures to protect herself online and then it happened it would be a different story.

I don;t get the link here. I have thousands of facebook links that I'm apathetic to, thousands more that I think are stupid arseholes and come to think of it a couple of people who used to pick on me at school.

Now, remembering that the bully doesn't have to post abusive messages on her facebook, what you're essentially suggesting is that A) you only link to people on facebook that you're friends wih (in which case most people would have around 4 - 5 links) and that B) This should be taken into account in court.

'Sorry, Madam, you just said that you were not friends with the rapist? Then would you please like to explain how you have been linked to him on facebook for the past 6 months?'

Using a social networking site for only people you're friends with rather than also people you don't know and/or hate?

Utter insanity.

Care to prove me otherwise, or are you just going to chuck sarcasm like the usual messageboard retard that doesn't have anything to contribute?
