Unannounced Videogame Probably Coming To Movie Screens Someday

Heard about the upcoming new game based on Dante's EA's [http://danteworlds.laits.utexas.edu/indexi.html] latest game to be licensed for a movie deal.

Don't feel too badly for not knowing anything about the game: EA hasn't actually announced it yet. But it's in development, according to a Variety [http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2008/10/ea-developing-d.html] report, and will probably launch late in 2009. The game will be a modern interpretation of Dante's epic poem detailing his journey through the nine circles of Hell, and is expected to be called, ever so creatively, Dante's Inferno.

Four studios are reportedly bidding for the movie rights to the game: Universal, Paramount, New Regency and MGM. Warner Bros. had also expressed interest, but dropped out of the competition yesterday for unknown reasons. Fighting for the rights to a game-based movie before the game is even announced is a bit of an unusual progression of events - typically, movie studios like to see how a game fares before they sink money into translating it to the big screen - but even if the game tanks horribly, a movie emerging from the property has a built-in safety net: It can be marketed as an over-the-top CGI-fest based on the poem itself rather than the suck-ass game it inspired.

It also fits well with EA's recent strategy of aggressively moving to bring its game properties to movie audience: The company recently announced that an Mass Effect [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/87039] has also been optioned.

Absolutely no details about the game, the movie, release dates, genre, platforms or even a confirmed title, have been released.

A game based on Inferno?? Oh crap, well it seems even the Divine Comedy isn't safe the from the 'take old idea or books and make them into games'. Having read and really enjoyed Inferno, I cannot even fathom what this game would be like or even how it would be good.

Well, turns out we ARE fresh out of (Fresh) ideas.

Great.

How do you make a game about walking around watching a bunch of awful people who blame all their problems on everyone but themselves? I dunno...my literary geek hackles are rising but the Inferno is really depressing if you don't read Purgatory and Paradise to hear Dante's full message on humanity.

Unless you do the whole trilogy, he basically just explains why we're all awful and then climbs up Satan's crotch into the unknown. Still, kudos for trying to make an intellectual game provided it isn't awful.

I don't know how they can make it tinto a game, seeing as how Dante is nothing but an observer throughout the entire poem. I wonder if they'll do Purgatorio and Paradisio? And it really doesn't surprise me that they're making it into a movie; in fact, I'm surprised the Divine Comedy hasn't already had a recent movie adaptation.

I'm sure it's already had plenty of artsy italian adapdations into movie form. I just dunno how you could make it into a GAME... Painkiller was kind of like Dante's Inferno. With Guns. And nothing like Dante's Inferno.

Incidentally I had no idea there were 2 other parts to Dante's Inferno! The Inferno gets way too much press. But, it's EA, so we can wager- it's going to be stupid but intuitive. Yay for lowering the bar!

... How would this work? I read "The Divine Comedy" for no reason other then I felt like it, but I don't see how it could translate into a game/movie. Hell, I barely understood it until I read the damn thing a second time.

No idea how they would make an Inferno-based game, but if they could pull it off it would be awesome! Don't really care about the whole movie thing as the rights to every other game are sold nowadays anyway (and for quite a while in the past too).

Although it isn't in the universe of the novel (though it could be since its all underwater), Bioshock effectively carries its themes of Objectivism from Atlas Shrugged. That said, what they're suggesting sounds quite different in style and a lot more challenging. Still, I'm looking forward to more news on this as the Inferno is brilliant.

Hearing about the plans for a Sims movie is like the announcement that there are plans for a Guitar Hero movie. It just seems to be a bunch of idea-lacking boardroom types with the money to buy these rights who look at what is popular and decide that it could be popular as a film, without any thought as to why it is popular in game format in the first place.

the only way I can think it working is if they make it like a puzzle game where when you leave a circle of hell you have to answer questions about what you learned or else you get trapped there or something, geh I don't know, just hope they don't try to make it like devil may cry with a real Dante and Virgil.

So by modern adaption, they mean throwing Master Chief into Hell right? Wasn't that...like...Doom II?

Truth be told, it could be a very cool artsy game, but artsy and EA don't seem to play well together. I can just imagine going through all of the circles. I tend to have nightmares when I do, but everything's better with a controller in your hand.
