Unauthorized id Games Removed From Android Market

Zenimax has brought the hammer down on the Android Market [http://www.android.com/market/], filing a DMCA complaint demanding that 11 unauthorized ports of id Software games be removed from the site.

Quake [http://www.zenimax.com/], saying that they are "unauthorized versions or contain content" taken from the copyrighted games. As a result, all off the software in question has been removed from the Market.

At least one developer of a Doom port is trying to get his game back on the site with ZeniMax's blessing, however. "Although the Doom source code was open sourced, and the application was based on a port of the PrBoom engine, the application is still suspended," he wrote in a message sent to Android and Me [http://androidandme.com/2009/12/news/id-software-frags-doom-quake-and-wolfenstein-ports-for-android/]. "My mistake was allowing the download of the Plutonia and TNT WADs, at least that is what I suspect." He also noted that while the software is still available through the web.

well they were all GPL'd years ago, tho it was only the engines that were, not any other part of the game itself, the models/wads and sounds are still under copyright.

at least one of the guys was a bit smart about it and trying to work it out.

Yeah, this might be one of the few level-headed uses of the DMCA I've seen in the last year.

Doom and Quake have been ported to every platform under the sun for a time period longer than, no doubt, many escapist readers can remember. This is the first time I have heard about one of these ports being taken down but normally they are only distributed with the shareware levels.
