Uncut Original Sailor Moon Coming to Hulu

Streaming broadcast of iconic anime series will include episodes never previously available in the U.S.

2014 is a big year for the iconic anime/manga series Sailor Moon, with a brand new anime adaptation of the original manga, Sailor Moon: Crystal, scheduled to begin airing in Japan on July 5th. Viz Media aquired the rights to bring this new version to the U.S., but before that they've prepared a treat for fans: rebroadcasting all 200 episodes of the original series uncut on Hulu throughout the summer, beginning on Monday May 19th with the first four episodes and two new ones being added weekly after that.

Sailor Moon, which follows the adventures of a team of superheroine schoolgirls who must battle invading demonic forces, began airing in the U.S. not long after it's Japanese debut; becoming (after a rocky start in syndication) one of the first major anime series to become a mainstream hit with U.S. audiences as part of the late-1990s anime boom. However, the version aired was heavily edited to (among other things) "Westernize" certain characters and plot points, remove "inappropriate" content and even change the relationship between two characters from a lesbian couple to cousins. The final season of the series, Sailor Stars, never saw a U.S. release.

The Hulu broadcast will include Stars, along with the rest of the original 200 episodes, presented uncut and restored with their original Japanese language tracks with English subtitles. A new English dubbed version is also being produced for Viz's DVD/Blu-ray release of the series in the Fall, and is planned for a subsequent Hulu broadcast of its own.

Not bad, not bad Viz Media/Hulu. You've been preparing for the reboot of Sailor Moon this July. It will be interesting how the dubs will turn out at least, especially in the later episodes when the "cousins" come in, though I think it would be more the standard fare for nowadays. Though it depends on how much the dub team respects the material.

Never got to watch Stars, so consider me on board for watching it.

Plus, I'll gladly check out the dub post original saga, as the story got super good after the R story arc.

So...yay lesbians?

I haven't seen the original DUB series in YEARS, so I hope the new dub/uncut is half as good as the Japanese/full version.

For people who don't understand what this series is (I don't blame you!), http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mziTsgji7to should provide some background

Stars is pretty good. I think it's the second-best season out of all of them (the first being the Heart Snatchers because the outer warriors finally show up). Plus, the first half of the season is actually one ongoing story, not individual episodes. It really keeps the pace moving there.

My friend sent this to me last night. I already own the entire series on DVD--very likely that Stars is a bootleg, but oh well--but I am still beyond excited about this. I can't wait to get it and watch it again with the new dub. I want to see if they make the characters over the top again with the English version, or how the English version turns out with the uncut episodes. I mean, in the first season, they managed to cut and edit almost two entire episodes into a single episode to avoid the deaths and the ghosts of the Scouts.
That's another thing: Are they still going to call them Sailor Scouts? I kind of hope so, because that title has kind of stuck with fans for years now.

You know, I may actually buy the DVD or Blu Ray sets of these. Depending on how good the new dub is anyway.

I hate to be 'that fan', but do we know the new cast list? I heard the end voice and thought Usagi/Serena (sorry, Toonami habit) was voiced by Cristina Vee?

Well, it looks like I have yet another reason to use Hulu...

Also, I wonder if this will lead to a Blu-Ray "re"-release...

Hells Freaking YEAH!

I mean, I already own the entire series in Japanese, uncut, but my Stars DVDs are fan-subs. It'll be nice to see season 5 properly released at long last.

Makes me glad I went with Hulu Plus over Netflix.

Oh, I hope so. I really, really hope so. ^^

Actually, the video promises just that. All 5 seasons, with a brand new dub, on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Generally I hate anime, but damn it if I hadn't been wanting this for the past decade or so. I now officially have a reason to sign up for Hulu, this is going to be...

Well balls. Here's hoping for a good dub for the DVD release then.

Great!
Now Megan Fox have a great way to research her role for any potential Sailor Moon movie that might get made!
Such good news!

Yeah, implying she's gonna watch that for research and not to just fangirl the hell out.

Oh, only Hulu and US, well fuck you too.
No European love? ... Well that sucks! Guess I'll have to wait for the pirates then, seeing how, once again, they give me no other option!

I would like either her or Jessica Calvello. The latter mostly because it would be one of the greatest meta brick jokes I can think of.
