Serj Tankian. Whether he's singing with SOAD or by himself, I haven't listened to a song by him that I haven't liked.
Elect the Dead was awesome, although the song Money isn't that good, but Honking Antelope is one of the best ever made!

Opeth are the only Swedish progressive jazz/blues/death metal band I know of.
There are a few others, but the good ones sound like Opeth and completely different at the same time.

I love Opeth, and recommend Farmakon and Ikuinen Kaamos to you. The former is more modern prog death sounding and the latter is more prog/black/ambient.

Music that's unique? Here ya go:
Gogol Bordello - Gypsy Punk. Like a good Ukranian Vodka that's also on fire.
Kaizers Orchestra - Norwegian Polka/Punk dirges.
If you like Gogol and Kaizer check out the Red Elvises. Rockabilly from Russia.

I´ll add Hella to this list of obscure bands, just so that I could feel myself unique. Looked this up when I learned, the guitarist is currently playing drums in The Advantage. The drummer seem quite busy, by the way.

Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Black Sabbath, Kalmah (not really that unique as they're melodic death metal, but they do it so damn well), Fantomas (lots of Mike Patton stuff here), John Zorn, Aphex Twin. Check all that out for a while.

I Know a few bands/musicians with a fairly unique sound, some of which have been already mentioned.

Beck
Belle and Sebastian
Donovan (quirky, folky and phycadelic)
fleet foxes (also folky, but a very different kind of folk)
They Might be Giants

Patton stuff is always good. Might I recommend for all of the mellow-ish music fans out there, give Wolf Parade a listen. As far as unique, I would be a jerk if I didn't recommend my roommates band, Their Teeth Will Be of Lions. They are on myspace and they are having a cd release show in Grand Rapids, MI tomorrow and one in Kalamazoo (their hometown btw) on Saturday. Check em out on myspace if you get a moment.

Reel Big Fish (Ska)
How dare you sir, they are ska punk and not ska!!!! There is a huge difference between desmond Decker, Skatalites and the Supersonics than that American tripe you just mentioned.
Reel Big Fish is 3rd wave ska. That tends to be synonymous with 'ska punk', but it's still ska.

Yes it's not Desmond Decker, The Skatalites, The Specials, Toots, or any of that. Different eras.

Honestly, I can't stand most 3rd wave ska. I love punk rock, I love 1st wave and two tone ska, but 3rd wave just rubs me the wrong way. But just because I can't dig it doesn't make it 'not ska'.

------------------------

And for my money, I'm going with The Clash, Tom Waits and Siouxsie and The Banshees. None of them sounded like anybody else at the time, and Tom Waits in particular still manages to surprise me in like, his 30-40 old year career (pick up his triple album Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards). Crazy old coot. Legends as far as I'm concerned.

I found the video for Elect the Dead intriguing. Yes, Honking Antelope was indeed a great song. A bit misanthropic, but great none the less. ^-^

I've been getting bored with the music I've been listening to as of late.
What r some of ur favorite unique bands?
Either the band themselves is unique or the music/sound is unique.
I'll start with my most recently listened to unique band....
<img src="http://www.jesolo.it/photo/tool_logo.jpg" alt="tool>
Ten-minute shambling bass-feedback and meaningless lyrics for the win, although Aenema is a very good song.

Also: ITT people post the most obscure band they've heard of in an effort to sound cool.
Don't worry.

A lot of people don't put in the time to understand Jungian psychology or the other extremely esoteric references Maynard puts in his lyrics, lord knows I haven't.

I still listen to Tool, and A Perfect Circle daily, however, and find the lyrics to be just as haunting and awesome as the instrumentals. APC has a much better grip on conveying clear messages, too, although I didn't know until someone told me that "The 13th Step" album was all about addictions, mocking the 12-step recovery program. The fact that he places precise lyrics higher on the priority list than rhyming at all is a bold, refreshing move imo.

MmMmMm...

Y'know, if someone trollbaited a hate-Tool thread, I'd fall for it every time because I've so consistently gone back to them as a baseline for music when I get tired of the new stuff.

The Reel Big Fish,
Alesana,
A Day to Remember,
Bayside.

I've known the Reel Big Fish for several years now while the rest I've just become acquainted with.
Also, Bayside is awesome. Just throwing that out there again.
