[Update] Maxis Getting Help From BioWare to Write Darkspore?

Is the noted Canadian RPG studio assisting in the penning of the fiction for Maxis' upcoming Diablo/Spore hybrid?

Last week, EA unveiled a surprising new title: reports Gamespot [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102219-Spore-Meets-Diablo-EA-Announces-Darkspore-Action-RPG], and in the process apparently revealed something rather interesting regarding the script and story.

Word on the street has it that fellow EA studio BioWare, known for RPG epics like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, will be helping the SimStudio in writing Darkspore. Considering that BioWare games are known for the strength of their writing, this would probably be a good thing for anyone whose interest the game had piqued.

However, while conflicting report [http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/bioware-lending-maxis-a-hand-darkspore-development] to muddy the waters.

According to Destructoid, it isn't so much that BioWare is helping Maxis as a whole, as it is that a member of the BioWare writing cabal has been placed at the head of the Maxis team charged with creating the game's fiction. The writer in question is Malcolm Azania, who previously worked on Mass Effect 2 (the downloadable Kasumi mission, to be precise) as well as BioWare's Facebook game Gift of the Yeti.

Azania is also reportedly an award-winning novelist for Del Ray/Ballantine, so it's safe to say that whoever is actually working on the Darkspore story probably knows what they're doing. We've reached out to Maxis to try and clear up the matter either way.

Update: It looks like it's the latter. A Maxis rep told us: "The Darkspore team is working with Malcolm Azania for the writing/fiction in the game. Malcolm comes from the BioWare team and worked on the Mass Effect fiction. That's the extent of it."

Is it true that in Darkspore, you can't actually create your creature? That's the message that I got from this:
If so, gratz on Bioware for story. Why is Capcom managing the execution of the game?

False, the game uses an updated Spore Creature Creator for making NPCs and your character.

If you watch the Comic Con panel from Gamespot, they say that the Heroes you 'collect' are all made by the Maxis team. Though they're using a different version of the Creature Editor, where you can place you 6 pieces of equipment and 6 Flare items, positioning them how you want. They also have different skins, that affect the pieces you use and the hero. What they're doing is giving you a base model, but you can still do a whole lot of things to change it. The editor has all the same knobs and circles that the original spore had.

Bioware is Canadian??? Oh man, what with LRR and now this, it's becoming harder and harder for me to uphold my intolerance of Canada!

That's weird to hear, wonder if the game will actually be good or will it be like it's predecessor.

About 30 minutes into the panel they show off the Creature Editor where you can do some serious modifications to the heroes you get.

A title with a Spore element?

I hope it doesn't suck as badly as Spore did.

Spore had a decent concept, but it was 5% evolution, and 95% sub-par intergalactic spice trading simulator.

Seriously.

I'm more inclined to believe the Destructoid article.

What does BioWare have on its plate right now?

The Old Republic
Dragon Age 2
Mass Effect 3

These are all huge titles with a great deal expected of them.
I sincerely doubt that they would want to spare some of their core writers for these games for EA's unimpressive-looking atonement for Spore. I'd be more inclined to think that they could let one writer go to help write the story. When the game tanks (and I'm pretty sure it will), it's better to sacrifice one writer on the disavowing of the game instead of the entire studio getting caught in the blowback.

Huh, a diablo style game with a spore-like creature creator/editor, and BioWare level writing?!?

Why am I just learning of this game's existence now?
