Updated: Capcom Gearing Up For Onimusha Announcement?

Another day, another teaser site. This time it's Capcom's turn, and all signs are pointing to a new entry in its Onimusha franchise.

Freaking Hideo Kojima. After he set the bar higher for teaser sites with his Metal Gear Solid Rising/Peace Walker page, it seems that every company nowadays is making their teaser sites twice as hard to crack and twice as likely to be full of countdowns to more countdowns. Capcom is the latest company to get in on the teaser site action, except it seems that fans have already solved this puzzle.

Wander over to this mysterious Capcom hosted site [http://www.capcom.co.jp/1600/]. A brief animation plays, with the numbers 1560, 1573, 1582 appearing and being crossed out in succession before the number 1600 shows up in a bold and gold typeface. What ever could these numbers mean?

Don't bother doing any Da Vinci Code stuff here, because common sense folks have already figured that these numbers are probably years, and not only that, they're years that roughly correspond to the years when the various Onimusha games take place. Only 1573 is off, as Onimusha 2 takes place in 1571. Everything else lines up with the three main Onimusha games, with 1600 presumably being for the newest one (Dawn of Dreams doesn't count because it was bad). Even the fonts seem Onimusha-ish.

I was half-expecting Capcom to announce Onimusha as one of its "surprise" games of E3, but they revealed Resident Evil on PSP instead. Well, this could be what I was looking for. Onimusha 4? It could very well be in the works and planned to coincide with the upcoming Onimusha movie. Please keep series star Takeshi Kaneshiro is all I'm asking. And, why not, bring back Jean Reno, too.

UPDATE: So apparently this isn't for a new Onimusha but for a new Sengoku Basara [http://www.capcom.co.jp/basara/], a third-person action franchise popular in Japan but not so popular in the West (where we got the first game as Devil Kings). The 1600 image appears on that Basara page, which would seem like confirmation enough, but I'm not sure. Anyone who can read Japanese, feel free to figure this out for me.

If it's a new Basara game, will Capcom bring this game to the West? It sounds like they're considering it - a Twitter update [http://twitter.com/Capcom_Unity/status/2105780177] not so long ago from the company asked fans "if we were going to bring out a Sengoku Basara game in the US, what name should we use?"

Onimusha...now theres a series that should have stopped at the first one.
It's not that bad, it's just not a title one should be bragging about or making teasers for.

Yeah. I understand teaser sites for things like AC2, but people are hardly going to be stomping babies underfoot on the Ominusha 4 release...

That's also good.

Sengoku Basara. Replacing names of games died during the early 2000's.

Could always rename it to Dynasty Warriors EX: Alpha Max Turbo. If anyone watched the anime, that's the first the thing that came to my mind with the sheer over-the-top action. Watching those little footman get blown away by just one swing of an axe capable of creating mini tornadoes, epic.

Just wanted to comment that researching the years shows various major battles in Japan, two of which note conquerings of Oda Nobunaga, and 1582 being when he was forced to kill himself. This is where I felt Onimusha was likely. 1600 was the end of one era and beginning of another, though I forget the specific names.

Yeah, this Basara series looks to be what the announcement was for, and it seems like a disappointment to me. I dunno what it is about the look, but it just...doesn't work for me.

Konami's teaser was a disappointing Metal Gear announcement.

Square's teaser (that had very SaGa-esque art) was a disappointing Final Fantasy announcement.

Thus, I conclude that Capcom's teaser, despite looking like Onimusha, will be a disappointing Resident Evil announcement. Because that seems to be the trend these past couple months.

Yet the original Sengoku Basara was released outside Japan as Devil Kings. In 2005.

They could use that name since the original uses it.

I'll take your word for that. Its Capcom in the 7th generation, so its almost certain that the story will be atrocious, and the gameplay will feel uncompromising and unable to be enjoyed. (I'm looking at you, Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter IV, Bionic Commando and Dead Rising)
200 hours of gameplay and ~2500 online matches have me disagreeing on the Street Fighter IV part.

How do you figure that? Peace Walker looks really cool. Makes me wish I had a PsP.
It isn't that I'm glad or upset that there'll be a new Metal Gear, it's just that Metal Gear is big enough that teasing is wasted on it. In fact, my exact words to my friends when we discovered this teaser and were speculating about a couple games it could be were "I'll be very disappointed if this is just some Metal Gear teaser."

Sure enough, that's all it was. Teasers should be used for lesser-known games that are less likely to get a sequel. Giving us a teaser for Metal Gear would be like if God gave us a teaser about the sun rising tomorrow, then expected us to be floored with the big announcement at 6am. It's like "Yeah, we already figured as much". Same with the Final Fantasy teaser.

So basically Konami has teased us with the sun rising, Square teased us with the sun eventually setting. So what's next? Capcom is teasing us that there's going to be dew on the grass?
