Here we go. The first domino has toppled.

We'll get to see the effect this has in, I reckon, about 10-20 years. I expect there will be significant increase in tooth decay problems, especially for the poor.

I would love to hear how suspending habeas corpus for deportations is really not that big of a deal.
It is a really big deal. So is 10 million undocumented migrants. I don't expect they'll do that though, just the suggestion of the possibility accomplishes 90% of what suspending it would actually do.

So you're telling us that Trump is threatening to take away the thing that he's already ignoring in order to scare all the undocumented immigrants into self-deporting?

I also want to point out that, even if we accept tstorm's "10 million" undocumented immigrants at face value, then he's saying that the suspension of one of the key tenets of our judicial system is justified in order to deal with...around 0.3 percent of the US population.

Oh that problem is easily solved. Just suspend it for all of Trump's other enemies too once its been shown he can get away with it.

And you're calling other people insane.
I feel like I've been pretty clear today, actual experience trumps whatever you make in your mind. There were reports of decreased border crossings and increased "self-deportations" before Trump even took office, and it's only gone further that direction. The rhetoric is the policy, the results are measurable, if that does not match what is in your mind, the problem is in your mind.

So then why even float the idea of suspending habeus corpus, if everything before it worked? Do you and Trump not know what a bright red line that is, what abuses could spring from it? Or do you not care, so long as you end up with fewer brown people in the country?

Is a mayor a member of congress? Aren't they local state government and congress is federal?
that is what the top pictured comment was explaining. though I should've added the rest, will do so now with minimal risk of butchering it by putting in own words

in case the non-link pics aren't showing - an occasional tendency of the site - a copy paste of words instead;

Members of Congress were also there, but were not arrested. One reason why? It's literally illegal for DHS to bar any member of Congress from entering an immigration detention facility for the purposes of conducting oversight.

The above provision obviously would not apply to Mayor Baraka or anyone else there. One bit I excerpted also makes clear that only Members of Congress have a right to do unannounced inspects. Their staff can be required to give at most 24 hours notice before being allowed to enter.

Since the FY20 spending bill. Dems had been turned away from ICE facilities during family separation, and made sure that was illegal. It has since been used on a bipartisan basis. Jason Crow (D-CO) has been using it to do oversight of the Aurora facility for years. crow.house.gov/transparency...

How long has that language been in appropriations bills? I’m surprised.

The facility must be operated “by or for” DHS. So that’s why it applies to private prisons contracted to detain immigrants; they are being operated for DHS.

Does this only apply to DHS facilities, and not other federal government buildings?

Important update that Rep. Coleman says she had already been allowed into the facility (again, it would be have been illegal for ICE to have denied her and other

One of the better(if often absent) youtuber weighs in on Trump and facism. He's German with a pretty extensive podcast about Weimar so he's arguably among the better youtube voices worth listening to on the subject

suspending habeas corpus would also mean that citizens would not have a right to challenge their detention/deportation. Is the President intending for US citizens to flee the country as well?
