MS tried it with the 360 and the PC with a few games, mostly Shadowrun - it didn't go down well. They had to impair the aiming on the PC to compensate for the gamepads, and it was rahter a waste of time.

This, on the other, is co-op, not competitive multiplayer, so it shouldn't be an issue.
Aah, I see.
Well then, I can't wait to see how this turns out :)

I'm just waiting for the Valve haters to kick in the door and say it's all a scam and Valve are the devil again.
I still think it was a bad move on their part to continue their public whining about the ps3 architecture after good games started coming out on the ps3. But they seemed to have stopped since e3.

What I find impressive is the idea of cross platform multiplayer. I've been wanting to see that for ages.
If it's going to be the same price, I may as well get the ps3 version. I'll probably still just play it on the PC but I'm sure one of my friends will take it off my hands.

Valve is steadily losing ground with PC gamers, and up until now I didn't really agree with it. The mannconomy update really did a lot to lose the PC gamers respect, but giving console gamers exclusive content, as well as the ability to have both platforms for the price of one, is a little ridiculous... why not offer that to PC gamers, as well? It's such a shame to see one of the only developers that has been good to the PC community flip their script and start targeting the consoles...

I, personally, have no knowledge of cross-platform multiplayer
Has anyone done something like this before?
If so, has it worked?

I'm sorry if that's a stupid question, but I'm just ignorant of how it all.. works.
I assume that the PS3 version includes Hydra maps and possible Hydra co-op, so cross-platforming sounds like a plausible option.

As a playstation player who is frequently frustrated by the apparent dominance of XBL over PSN I am pleased with finally getting some love. However, it does seem sorta odd that this functionality isn't available for both systems. I wonder if I'll be able to sell my pc version...
Highly doubt that, it's against the Steam EULA to sell your games/account to others.

Cool. I can buy the PS3 version and get the PC version free.

Sounds like a no-brainer.

If you own a PS3, and a PC...Still get the PS3 version.

Wait, so if I buy it on the PS3 I get the PC version for free? Holy shit!

If I buy it on the PC, will I also get the PS3 version for free?

If anything, I'm seeing this as a call to console gamers to try the PC Steam setup; assuming that these PS3 owners will have to download Steam to pick up their free PC copy, they may actually enjoy themselves and stick around, thus building a larger community for the PC side of Steam.

And enough with the mannconomy update complaints already; people act as if you can pay to be better than everyone else in TF2.

Nah, you can't sell PC games. Physical or Digital.

Good for them, I will just refuse to purchase Portal 2, then.

This news probably won't be quite as popular with Xbox 360 and PC players, however, as they will have to fork out the same amount of money as PS3 owners in exchange for significantly less content.
Wont the pc version be alot cheaper like every other game?
Also the version with most content is the version with the razer hydra, that offers additional levels and new mechanics like motion controls and scaling blocks etc.
So they pay more for less content.
Still pretty good deal though. They propably want to convert a few playstation gamers. Totally get what you mean.
In order to use the hydra levels, don't you have to own a hydra? Meaning that your purchase of Portal 2 goes from $50 to $100 (that's not paying less than console gamers anymore)? Either way, since buying the PS3 version gives you access to the PC version, you also can have the hydra levels if you want them. Boot up your free PC copy and go get the hydra. Bam, you have hydra levels.

I don't have a PS3, but this is fantastic news. What a way for Valve to explode onto the PS3 Market.

I'm mean, once the connection between console and Pc is made via steam I can see pretty much all new multiplayer games coming with Cross console Co-op.

This is all good.

All we need now is Steam for X-box (but MS are Douche fags) and for the w... you know, even I can't believe I was about to say that. :3

I'm gonna stop you there. What kind of ungrateful PC player doesn't realize that Valve has been supporting a three year old PC game for free? A game that is often basically free on their digital download service because of steam sales? How do you expect them to justify continued support on TF2 when they basically are not making money off of it? The manconomy update allowed players to buy stuff they could instead unlock(and some they couldn't) to help support the game. Then they introduced crates as random drops(which doesn't lower your drop count for the week) so they could encourage you to buy keys all to help support the damn game. Anyone that honestly lost respect for Valve because of this either is an ungrateful prick, or doesn't understand that the alternative was likely to abandon TF2 as they moved on to new IPs.

, but giving console gamers exclusive content, as well as the ability to have both platforms for the price of one, is a little ridiculous... why not offer that to PC gamers, as well?
Because they haven't ever shafted PC gamers, but they've shafted PS3 gamers plenty. Not to mention, this does little to harm PC gamers, as the 'exclusive content' you are going on about likely isn't much compared to PC mods and the razer hydra levels.
It's such a shame to see one of the only developers that has been good to the PC community flip their script and start targeting the consoles...
They have been targeting consoles since the release of L4D1. Now they are just targeting a different console that they neglected in the past.

Relax, Valve isn't abandoning the PC crew.

Damn, looks like the 360 users are getting the short end of the stick...hang on. Wasn't Dead Money for Fallout New Vegas exclusive DLC to 360? Wasn't Mass effect on the 360 for a good 3-4 years or so? Aren't we supposedly getting a metal gear game and didn't final fantasy come out on both consoles? Huh.

Keeping this mind, they can have their extra copy of the same game. My console of choice has had plenty of love, and when I get a new laptop, I'll just get portal 2 then. Until then, I've got dead space and Bulletstorm to enjoy. Which also is coming out on time...

Also, whats all this crap about hydra?

nothing has ever given me more viruses or lag then having a steam account. i would not wish that on anybodies PS3. On the flip side, i do want portals.... conundrums... :(
i highly doubt its from steam, but if it was, it wont be from valve, therefore your pc and ps3 are safe.

Seriously, if any steam game give viruses, uproar would hapen

DAMN THAT IS AWESOME! Valve is fucking incredible. I hope they go all multiplatform on us. Even tho I'm more of a PC gamer, I still like to play PS3. The fact that they might be opening the doors to PS3/PC multiplayer is just... great. My friends have PS3s but no gaming PCs... I'd love to play on my PC with or against them on their PS3s.

That's it. I cracked. What with this and Mass Effect 2 re-release, and the great year for PS3 in 2011, I bought a PS3. Now I own all 3 major systems (360, PS3 and most importantly a PC).

At least it has a blu-ray player to justify the price.

I hope Valve understands that they could just get HL:ep3/3 out and get all the respect back.
