This news probably won't be quite as popular with Xbox 360 and PC players, however, as they will have to fork out the same amount of money as PS3 owners in exchange for significantly less content.
As someone who will be playing Portal 2 on a PC, why should I care if PS3 players get to choose whether they want to play on their console or their computer? I'm not interested in playing the game on a console that I don't even have, so it's not like I'm missing out on anything. It's not even the "same amount of money" either, since the PC version will cost less, and if I wait some months, Valve will likely put it on sale at a greatly discounted price through Steam, as they usually do with their games.

Likewise, this isn't a 'free copy' so much as it is the option to play the game on an additional platform. Since the PSN and Steam accounts will be linked, you likely won't be able to play both copies online at the same time. I guess maybe one could play the PC version and sell or give the PS3 disc away to someone, though it likely wouldn't be worth that much if online play is limited to the registered copy.

I saw nothing to indicate that PS3 players are getting anything more than PC players, let alone "significantly more content" as this 'article' wrongly puts it. If anything, it might be beneficial to both groups, as it will increase the size of a previously segmented online community. So long as it doesn't adversely affect the PC multiplayer in any way, or limit the ability for Valve to provide future content updates to the PC version, I have nothing against it.

This sounds pretty cool. I'm wondering though, if they start linking up PC games and PS3 games that aren't co-op, that could be sort of... interesting.

TF2 mouse controls vs. TF2 controller controls: The most one sided battle since the most recent really one sided battle.

Well, that decides it. I'm getting it for the PS3. I was thinking about it just cuz of E3, but now it's confirmed.
And people have no right to complain about 360 not getting anything, it's microsoft's fault, not Valve's.

This could be a great example of cross platform gaming, but it would only work in a Co-op scenario. A Multiplayer cross platform game between PC's and Consoles would be an absolutely terrible idea however.

Wont the pc version be alot cheaper like every other game?
Also the version with most content is the version with the razer hydra, that offers additional levels and new mechanics like motion controls and scaling blocks etc.
So they pay more for less content.
Still pretty good deal though. They propably want to convert a few playstation gamers. Totally get what you mean.
In order to use the hydra levels, don't you have to own a hydra? Meaning that your purchase of Portal 2 goes from $50 to $100 (that's not paying less than console gamers anymore)? Either way, since buying the PS3 version gives you access to the PC version, you also can have the hydra levels if you want them. Boot up your free PC copy and go get the hydra. Bam, you have hydra levels.
I replied to the claim that that the ps3 version costs as much as the pc version and that the pc version gets less content. The pc version is cheaper then the ps3 version and both aren't the version with the most content.
Sure you can buy the game and some other stuff and then pay more then a console game, but you either don't pay as much or get more content.
Also the version with hydra support is a diverent one from the standart pc one.
So you won't be able to use your ps3 bonus copy with it.
Also the bundle costs 100 dollar, since the ps3 game is more expensive to begin with and you will lose the bundle discount, it isn't really viable.
So there would be some benefit to including the ps3 version with the pc version (not just the other way around)
Though i don't really care.
My point was that the pc version is cheaper and has potential extra levels. so you dont pay just as much for less content, but you pay less for the same or more content depening on what hardware you have.

For those of you complaining about getting the PS3 version to get the PC version for free if you plan on getting the PC version anyways... you could always, you know, buy the PS3 version, unlock the PC version for free, and then just take the PS3 copy down to GameStop or whatever and trade it in.

I don't know why 360 fans are moaning :/ How is Valve abandoning you, they started out on PC and PORTED games over to the 360, just because they have started giving the PS3 some attention doesnt mean they are abandoning you. Make it sound like as if Valve was always 360 exclusive.

If anything, it should be PC gamers moaning about being given a slight shaft, Valve has been the epitome of PC gaming for a while now, not 360 gaming. The only things put on 360 were half life, Team Fortress and L4D :/ Half Life and team fortress started life on PC, so really, the only thing 360 can say it has partly given birth to from Valve is L4D.

Where is the issue here?

nice to hear but what i want to know is does this offer work both ways? as in you buy the PC version and link you PSN account and get a PS3 copy of the game. if not seems a bit unfair for the other two platforms.
Everyone that owns a PS3 and PC should just buy the PS3 version and whala... a copy for each.

Wow this is not at all tempting me to buy portal 2 at all.

This is not in any way shape or form an appology to ps3 players, its 100% pure marketing. By giving away a free pc version that they know the majority of people wont use it will help their image. Those that do decide to use the pc version it means they have to install steam and it gives them another potential customer. Because hey actually having steam one your computer is one step closer to getting people to buy games from them.

Adding the ps3-pc crossover will again help with their sales. As seen in this thread a lot of people who would have just bought the pc version are seriously considering paying more for the ps3 one which gives them both. This is a bonus to vavle because really only an idiot would buy the exact same game for two different systems.

Honestly I dont care, the game is in no way shape or form worth the $50-60 they will charge for it.
Well, unfortunately gamers won't see it that way, lol

Marketing? Business? Whats that?

Great News! Now we need Left 4 Dead 2 for PS3, along with all the nice Steam features that come with it. That would be awesome to have for PS3 players.

PSN and PC - Portal co-op?

Not sure how I feel about that.
What's wrong with cross-console co-op? Or cross-console multiplayer? I honestly think its a step in the right direction. This way, it won't matter what system you buy. If a game is on multiple consoles, you can play with all your Xbox owning friends if you have a Wii or a PS3 (ideally).

OT: Grrrr.... I understand why for PS3, but this doesn't mean I can't be a little annoyed by it. (being a PC gamer and what not).

It's a different version all together for the hydra? That would appear to make it cost more than the Console version and being separated from the normal PC version means it likely wont get the same number of mods. The PS3 version is all of $10 more expensive than the PC version and comes with the PC version. That's two copies of the game, which means two different control methods and one of which has mods. It would appear that there is more content in buying the PS3 version.

Hydra be damned, with the stuff they are offering for the PS3 version, it does appear to have more content.

I doubt it. They're using account linking, not vouchers, so I suspect that it'll be a similar situation to what they already have on Steam, where only one copy can be running at once per account.

Also, to all the people complaining that the 360 version is getting no such love, just remember that this is Microsoft's fault, not Valve's. XBL has too many strict limitations in place, that completely prevent Valve from implementing such a feature even if they wanted to.

And to the couple of dudes who said they're not buying the game at all because of this, grow up. The PC version has not been shafted in the slightest, it's exactly the same game that they would have gotten anyway. Any extra content in the PS3 version will be EXTRA. Besides, at $10 more, I think it's completely reasonable for console gamers to get a bit more content. The only version that's actively being shafted is the 360 version, and as I explained before, blame MS for that one.

P.S. Thanks
