Valve Releases Steamworks

Steam [http://www.valvesoftware.com/].

The SDK includes support for product key authentication, copy protection, automatic updating, matchmaking and social networking, anti-cheat technology and more. A fully functional API for all Steamworks components is included, along with a multiplayer game example to demonstrate the Steamworks functions in action. New documentation for the SDK has also been made available on the Steamworks partner website.

"In working with developers on the pre-release SDK, our focus has been on making it as easy as possible for them to integrate Steamworks into their games," said Valve's Director of Business Development Jason Holtman. "They get access to these tools and services in a proven, scalable and simple-to-work-with package that has already been deployed to millions of gamers worldwide."

&^%$ STARFORCE. Hopefully this will mean that people start using the STEAM style CD key system and encrypted games which are activated on day 1.

Even more hopeful this will eliminate the things like Bioshock with stupid as hell limited activations systems - which did nothing to stop day 0 piracy.

On a side note it should also help some devs since a lot of the stuff like robust network code, and auto updating all takes time - and some games NEED more time on the GAME, not on the things that make the game work.

I think someone from EA (or a big Dev can't remember) said: We won't use this because we have all that in house. However its not for that its for the medium size devs.

I'm not sure that true indie games will need to have all of these tools to be honest.

However i can't really see a downside to it and the factthat its free is a major bonus.

So...I understand I'll be getting my indie fix on steam a lot more often now?
Most likely. So, if you like your Shadow of Colossus's and Okami's, you know where to go...
