uhhh reading this(on the vavle update too) made me sad because my computer is a bucket powered by a water wheel(basically crap) and with the lack of money and all I can't even afford a decent new one(just about all the parts need updates).

So yes I stick to your statement

"Hey Valve, I'll gladly take any of your old PCs, to get them off your hands. I mean, if you're not using them or anything..."

hopfully vavle are performing experiments on humans to turn them into mutants and now that I have said this they will kill me(or easier for the both of us) give me one of there old computers.

I was actually expecting them to have some Quadro-cards or something, considering their line of work.

But oh-my-god-oh-my-god-oh-my-god-oh-my-god I'd love me one of those computers. *Massive boner*

12GB of RAM makes absolutely no sense running on a 32 bit operating system. 32 bit can't even fully address 4GB of RAM, because some of the address space gets used as hardware references.

Those specs are what they have now. These are the specs they're moving to:

* EVGA X58 3X SLI Intel Motherboard
* Intel Corei7 940 2.93GHz Quad-Core Processor
* 12GB PC3-10600 DDR3 1333MHz ram (Crucial Ballistix, Kingston ValueRam)
* 1 x NVidia GTX285 1GB - OR - ATI 4870 1GB graphics card
* 1 x 250GB 7200RPM SATA HD (Seagate, Western Digital)
* 1 x 500GB 7200RPM SATA HD (Seagate, Western Digital)
* Lian Li P60-F Case
* Intel CPU Cooler
* 850W Antec power supply
* 1 x Dell 3008FPW-HC 30" LCD - OR - 2 x Dell 2001FP 20.1" LCD monitors
* Windows Vista 64bit"
This makes more sense... the title says 12GB of RAM but then lists only 4 in the system specs.

Well their old machines were running WinXP 32-bit, with 4GB of ram..which is ok. I think WinXP can access like 3.25GB.

The new machines with 12GB have Vista 64bit :)

Edit: Looks like you caught it, nevermind.

While impressive I feel I over did my build. See Im building a gaming PC with the budget of £1000, I'm a little over and heres what Im planning on building.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 3.0GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB)
OcUK Value JW-X48D2 Extreme-P Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C6 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit
XFX GeForce GTX 295 1792MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM
Samsung TS-H353B 16x DVD-ROM SATA (Black) - OEM
Antec Signature Premium 850W Power Supply

I have all the rest (Moniter etc...) Running on Linux, 22" 1080p 2ms 50,000:1 Screen.

Though if they dont mind throwing some of that RAM this way? No? Awwh...

Costing me 10 months of wages ¬_¬

I just ordered mine a couple of days ago. Pretty much the same specs, but only with 6 GB of PCR Ram and a 28''. Cost me about 2000 ?. And if I sound like a prick so be it, I have to brag wiht it somewhere :p (yes I do realize that that's pretty sad)

I don't see how they could ever need that much. It just shows how much Valve makes if they can spend that much on every member of the dev team. I don't know how much it cost exactly (I picked it out, but my parents paid for it) but my new PC has 1/4 of the RAM, a graphics card with 1/4 of the dedicated RAM, 0.5GHz less processing power and it din't come with a monitor and it still cost about £600-£1000.

Valve, I salute you.

They could do some sort of competition and give away their old PCs as prizes

I thought that XP 32 bit could only use 2 cores, and it says that they used a Quad Core? Or can XP 32 use 4 cores?

WinXP Pro 32-bit can use up to 32 cores. Nothing compared to variants of Linux, other UNIXes or specialist software like z/OS, but still more than in any computer you'll ever use for gaming.
Thankyou very much.

I'll bet they had no problem playing Crysis...
Crysis is a game? I thought it was just benchmarking software...

That's very close to what I have now. Q9650, 8GB RAM, 9800GX2, Dell 24" + Viewsonic 27.5".
Word of caution: Do NOT buy a Viewsonic 27.5". Colour quality and viewing angle are awful.
