Vin Diesel to Play Sentient Tree Groot in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel has officially confirmed that Vin Diesel will join the Marvel cinematic universe as plant-like alien Groot.

Action star Vin Diesel, known for his roles in the Fast and the Furious and Dave Bautista [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/8048-Riddick] and screen legend Glenn Close have all been confirmed. Guardians of the Galaxy is slated for release August 1, 2014.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/119653-Marvels-Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-Movie-Is-Actually-Happening] stars an unusual group of superheroes. In its latest comic reboot in 2008, the heroes include Bug, Drax the Destroyer (Bautista), Gamora (Saldana), Rocket Raccoon (Cooper), and Star-Lord (Pratt). Groot was one of the founding members of the Guardians, and the team spends its time defending the galaxy from the machinations of Thanos, who was toothily revealed in the credit sequence of Joss Whedon's Avengers. The Guardians of the Galaxy will probably serve to further introduce Thanos as a threat to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Previous speculation had Diesel playing anyone from Avenger on Facebook [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125859-Vin-Diesel-Seemingly-Reveals-His-Marvel-Studios-Role]. Gunn writes, "It is very close to how he looks in the movie. We have slightly tweaked it in animation, and to my mind, it looks even a little better." Diesel will lend his voice and provide the motion capture for animating the alien tree.

I love Vin Diesel but I haven't read a comic book in years. I will still see the movie because they are entertaining, I just wish I knew who they were.

Touch wood, I hope he does the part justice. An interesting way to branch out on his career no doubt, I just hope he isn't barking up the wrong tree. I'll be rooting for him.

These guys showed up to cameo in the Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Ultimate Spiderman cartoons. They were... odd.

Its hard to tell from two episodes of two completely different series written by two different sets of writers, but... Well, they seemed like they all had different personalities and skill sets that could make them entertaining, but which might fail spectacularly.

Since nobody made this joke yet; his performance is bound to be rather wooden in this one.

Oh come on can't you just leaf the puns alone? You always make so mulch ado about nothing. So Vin diesel got a role, good for him! He was pining for one so badly after all the only thing he has been playing is the rootless wanderer Riddick or branching out into street racing. Just give it some time it will grow on you.

He knocked it out of the park with this:

I imagine he can give pathos to a sentient alien tree thing just as well.

It may sound strange, but I have read a bunch of the Guardian of Galaxy books over the years... and Groot actually always came off as a female to me. Obviously Groot is asexual but always seemed more feminine to me than masculine somehow. All well, I'm fine with it. Groot only says it's name, which is why it's call Groot, so he can't possibly do a bad job at the part. I like Vin Diesel, I think he does some pretty decent acting, and who doesn't love a bro, but his part is going to be far more physical than it takes any kind of actual acting.

I can't stop seeing the similarities between Diesel and that WoodHead :p

This'll be interesting, and I'm bound to see this anyway since the Marvel movies have been good, and I want to see how far they'll extend this universe thingy...

Seriously, I think these jokes are branching out a little too far now. Please stop planting these awful puns in our heads.

Thank you. Once the first one had killed me, the others were much easier to deal with.
