Virtual Reality Oculus Rift Viable in Kung Fu Kickstarter

Kung Fu Superstar outlines its controller potential in a new demonstration video.

Kinesthetic Games has taken its Kung Fu Superstar [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117367-New-Motion-Control-Fighter-Will-Teach-You-Kung-Fu] to Kickstarter and, in its latest gameplay video, announces support for the Oculus Rift headset, as well as pretty much every other possible means of interface, from standard controllers to motion devices.

You play as Danny Cheng, a martial artist trying to make his mark as a film stuntman. This allows Kinesthetic to seamlessly take Danny from a medieval setting to modern Hong Kong cop action, but in previous iterations the game seemed to rely heavily on motion control. This prompted concern that the game just wouldn't be as much fun, or even playable, if the player wasn't into motion controls.

Kinesthetic's Kostas Zarifis, with one eye on his company's Kickstarter [http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kostaszarifis/kung-fu-superstar-become-the-ultimate-martial-arts], has been quick to reassure potential customers that they can play the game as they like, whether using a standard scheme or something as exotic as the Oculus Rift. "You're the one who makes the final decision on how you want to experience the game," Zarifis says.

The allure of Kung Fu Superstar is its adherence to actual martial arts moves. "Key members of the team have many years of martial arts experience," according to the Kickstarter page, "have studied various different styles and have even won a few tournaments!" Progression involves learning the game's moves, which means that - in time - the player will pick up some martial arts techniques.

Zarifis and his team quit their game development jobs to make Kung Fu Superstar; it remains to be seen whether they'll be able to make it happen.

Yea shows promise but again I shall pass on the motion tech part i like chilling while gaming myself. I'll go for a run or do actual matial arts with my friends locally if I feel the need :) But lets hope they check Jim's vid for a checklist of do's and do nots :)

I loled when Peter Molyneux showed up, but yeah, this is kind of the right thing to do with Kinect. The gameplay video seemed kind of "fake" though, Kinect Star Wars on E3 kind of fake

I don't really care about motion control games. Just make an awesome Kung Fu brawler. We don't have a lot of those. People CAN'T learn martial arts by playing a game. It takes years of actual training and it relies on muscle memory. So don't delude yourself thinking that you can learn something from this.

>see kung fu game
>"Awesome!"
>See Peter Molyneux
>"Ah shit..."

Poor Peter is becoming something of a liability for other people who are pitching ideas.

So it's another motion bollocks game.

I like their enthusiasm on this but there are 3 major issues:
- even the 3 minute gameplay looked horribly boring
- these guys have worked on some of the worst games out there
- Peter Molyneux... do not ever put that man in your presentations

Seems like a really cool project.... But as someone who does Bujinkan Ninjutsu all I can think is will this keep up with fast precise movements without going Batshit like so many other kinect games.

Oh and for the record.

Bullshit, bullshit, once again utter bullshit.

You need professionals, NEED them to teach you any form of Martial art hands on, Without you are either going to damage something or someone, you treat all forms of combat with respect if you are learning, you wont get anything off this like they claim.

Bah, I almost feel like ranting now.

We need to set shit strait here. No one is going to learn anything from this. If those team members were the martial artists he says they are they wouldn't be OK with this jack-hole spreading shit like that. That is like saying that if you know how to curl your digits into a fist and throw a punch, soon you'll be a boxer. No, it doesn't work like that.

They are just going to pile every "cool" and new gimmick into this in order to get people on board? Just concentrate on making a good game. Also, those Pak Sau's are terrible looking, haha. I kid, I kid.

Edit: My post sounded overly negative. What they want to do is awesome, and I hope it gets executed somewhat close to what they plan. I won't hold my breath on this, but I'll cross my dan fingers.

I can see how punching and kicking around with a VR headset on is an excellent idea...

In any case, I hope they can pull off a responsive and entertaining motion-controlled game.

Agreed. I think this is awesome and should get funded and all, and that we should throw our money at it and worship and praise it, but there is no way this will possibly to even the smallest degree teach us any actual martial arts in any way, shape, or form.
