Virtual Voyeur Outs Himself on Star Trek Online Forum

Star Trek Online user, SkybuckFlying, is undressing you with his eyes. And his nude patch.

Star Trek Online forum users got an eyeful when they went to check out a directory of screen captures taken by a user named SkybuckFlying. While the screen caps Skybuck was sharing were legitimate, another folder in the directory that he or she had forgotten to make private was discovered to be full of pictures of female characters rendered naked by an unofficial nude patch. It also contained a text file advertising the same patch, which can be had for a mere one million in-game energy credits.

So, we may be dealing with an entrepreneurial pervert.

"Why don't you tell us why you have a folder full of pics of various players you took using a nude mod, probably without their knowledge?" wrote one user after they discovered the secret stash of space flesh. "Incidentally I took a screenshot of the directory and also mirrored the entire thing, so don't bother trying to remove or hide it."

The discussion thread had since been deleted.

Virtual world or no, there is something mildly unnerving about the thought that anyone - anyone - you meet in an online game could be secretly leering at your exposed E-genitals via some illicit technical wizardry. Of course, the existence of in-game X-Ray specs may not be as incompatible with the Star Trek lore as you might first assume. My first response to this is: who cares? I mean, its not like he's actually looking at the real me , right?

This reeks of slow-newsday-itis.

Sorry, I don't project myself that thoroughly onto my online characters. He can do whatever the hell he wants to his game.

I fully agree with this. Though if someone can make a serious case for why this in any way shape or form matters I'd be very interested in hearing those arguments. Until then I am gonna assume the author of the article just wanted an excuse to link to that star trek comic strip (*giggle*).

Honestly? I think the person who wigged out over them needs to probably grow up; nearly every modable game has a nude patch. Besides it's not like he's got actual pictures of the real-life players behind the character. Let the freak make his virtual money off of other freaks; least he's not hiding in the bushes outside your house watching you shower.

Hasn't there been a nude patch for WoW for, like, a gazillion years? I'd actually be surprised to find an mmo without one nowadays.

It'd be a bit embarrassing to be found out to have it, I suppose, and that comic was good fun.
...but i don't particulary see how this is newsworthy unless it has caused a large (uncalled for) uproar, different in scale to the usual drama infecting every messageboard everywhere.

So that's really all there is to this? It was being taken so seriously in the article that I was starting to think it had to involve more than just reskinning people's avatars from his perspective.

I had just assumed that this would happen all the time in moddable multiplayer.

lets not also forget that 90% (pulling an arbitary figure out of the air) of those girls were guys, and who the hell cares?

its jut creepy how this person had to take reams of screens of his mod, like he/she really does have some sort of issue with digital nudity or something.

I was more interested in reading the comments, which reflect my own view (Who the hell cares about a nude patch in the first place!?) than the article.

All that elicited in me is a *yawn*. Nothing to see here. (Pun intended)

Pretty sure WoW's patcher would change back the oh-so-shocking nude patch. Or Warden to report it to Blizzard, for that matter.

And although I couldn't care less if somebody was patching their game to see my avatar naked, it's kind of sad to see that people get off with that sort of things. But whatever floats their boat.

Somewhere during BC Blizzard banned texture-swapping, but all the way up to that it was perfectly legal. Which is not to say it became impossible afterwards.

But really: last time I checked the "most popular/month" section on Skyrim Nexus, 6 out of 30 were about nudity, sex, or creating porn star bodied females.

Actually... it didn't. ;)

Sometimes a patch broke it, but it survived more often than not.

i'm no stranger to STO and since launch there has seemingly been a "bug" where female player characters (and it only effects female characters strangely) teleportation effect causes them and their underware to arrive a faction of a second apart from the rest of their clothes...
I'd be having a chat with your chief transport officer. :)

I thought online games had file checks to prevent modding like this.
