Volition Announces Open-World Action Game Agents of Mayhem

The newest game from Saints Row developer Volition is single-player only open-world action title Agents of Mayhem.

The latest game from Saints Row developer Volition has been announced. Agents of Mayhem will be a single-player only open-world action game published by Deep Silver. It sports a cel-shaded art style, and a villain that looks to have been pulled out of the pages of a James Bond novel (seriously, the enemy organization is named L.E.G.I.O.N.).

The first trailer shows off the team of three that you'll control. It includes a sky pirate captain named Fortune who showcases speed and agility, a "badass sailor" named Hardtack who sports a large harpoon, and bounty hunter slash reality TV star named Hollywood who comes complete with a stunt double lackey to do his heavy lifting. They're taking on the evil Doctor Babylon.

There's not much more in the way of details on how the control of your squads will work, or what the game is actually about, but the trailer seems to hint hat you'll be taking on the bad guys as part of a small operation that does what it wants, which could be pretty fun. Add in that it's single-player only, and you color me intrigued. You can bet that we'll find out a lot more next week at E3.

So Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite banded together Proto Johnny Cage, a pirate and the Demo from TF2 to fight the Sith?

That's something?... Other than that I didn't like the trailer, maybe if the gameplay looks good I will reconsider.

The sound was shit on the trailer, and the characters were Borderlands levels of bland and annoying.

Still, it visually looks good and if they can pull it off in engine then its one of those that will age well (even if it looks like another Overwatch or Battleborn).

Then you got the Saints Row connection (gang sign/Ultor), that may be as relevant as the Saints Row/Red Faction connection, basicly not much and mostly for fans.

EDIT: Looking at the still it does look nice but they are bullshots in that the light and texture quality will certainly suffer a bit.

The screenshots also give a much bigger Crackdown vibe.

I do think they are fucking up by not making it at least have co-op

In the press release they also confirmed that this takes place in the SR universe (probably after the Earth went poof. And then was presumably brought back due to off-screen time travel shenanigans. That series was fantastically goofy, wasn't it?). Heck, the logo for the MAYHEM organization is a futuristic version of the Saints' Fleur-de-Lis.

Anyway, the trailer doesn't seem as silly as SRIV was (yet), but it's clearly carrying on the spirit of the series. After Volition went on to satirize and deconstrust open world crime games, and then open-world superhero games, now they're looking to do the same with the super agent/mercenary genre. Also, points for setting the game in a futuristic Seoul instead of just going with New York/Chicago/LA clone #brokethemeter. Asia has tons of metropolitan centers that are rife for exploring and I want to see more of that.

So basically its their attempt to compete with Borderlands 4, while complete oblivious that the new gaming trend is TF2 clones.

Don't you mean Daisy Fitzroy?

The one woman who headed the revolution in Columbia? The one who doesn't look even remotely like any of the people in this trailer? I was talking about the boss lady at the end, I couldn't come up with any funny comparision for the Latin Lady so she's "The Pirate".
It may have been confusing because Bearded Demo is also dressed like a pirate...

Knowing Volition, this is going to end up a talking chicken scientist away from an episode of Danger Mouse

Kinda diggin its vibe even if the characters feel like stereotypes rather than actually interesting characters, visual style is interesting and appeals to my cartoon tastes (especially that mix of 3D and 2D effects, love that stuff), gotta wait on gameplay vids though to see how it holds up. Hopefully it'd be more interesting than Sunset Overdrive.

Also, I'm seeing a rise in the more colourful and light hearted visuals in games and I'm kinda liking it, especially when it seems like gaming is now kinda reaching for a bit of the old days, it'd be nice to see more diverse visuals coming about, we haven't had anything Suda51 looking in a while too (visually that is).

Oh I dunno, I think the pirate chick looks similar enough to Daisy. Certainly more than the woman at the end looks to Elizabeth, even from BaS. The lady looks more like I dunno, Jessica Rabbit minus the personal flotation devices.

I am actually really excited about this, but I love the classic spy genre, and to make fun of itself is always a blast. Plus it looks like it has a lot of material outside of the spy genre and more in modern pop culture to make fun of. This looks fun.

A'hoy mutha fuckas!

So... The Third Street Saints decided to go into the secret agent business? Intriguing.

I've quite enjoyed the last few installments of Saints Row, and the implications of an even wider playfield to wreak mayhem upon sound promising. I'd like to see a little more depth in all that world-building, but for now, Volition at least has my attention.

Daisy is black woman with black hair. Pirate is a latin woman with blue eyes and blonde hair. They look nothing alike.

One of the endings you could choose for the Gat out of Hell dlc after beating it was, and I swear I'm not making this up, the option to "retcon" the entirety of the Saints Row series resetting literally everything that was done in previous games, including Earth's destruction in multiple character deaths.

Hell it's even brought home by he fact that when you see Jhonny Gat in that ending, he's working as some kind of no nonsense loose cannon cop. So this really could be the Saints Row retcon ending from that game, which if it is I'd have to say is pretty clever, at least to me.

I mean not a lot of other people I know just outright say, "yeah it's retconexd, we're back to zero, what're you gonna do?"

Plus I have faith, Volition always does solid gameplay; if the story doesn't hold up at least it will play well. It's like they say, story in games is like story in porn, it's there but not necessary.

So when they say "sky pirate captain," i am to assume that there are sky pirates, therefore sky pirate ships, therefore sky pirate ship battles and lore in this game? Fckin sold!
Though the rest is varying levels of ehh. Eye rolled at the "ahoy muthafucka" bit so hard i fell off my chair. They could've even added "dawg" to complete my eye roll into a backflip. So am not expecting any clever or funny writing here, par for the course for Volition.

I liked Saints Row 2 and quite liked The Third, but IV didn't really wow me as much as I'd hoped it would. It was just The Third + Prototype, and given how much I'd already played both of those games, I kinda wanted something more. Then they turned Gat Out of Hell into a full game and... eh.

Hopefully they really mix up the actual gameplay this time around, which does sound possible given the whole "sky pirate" thing. If it just plays like a slightly-different Saints Row again, though, I'm probably going to find myself unfortunately bored rather quickly.

Sounds fantastic. Volition did well with the Saints Row games, 3 and 4 were fantastic and particularly for giving me some of my most enjoyable co-op gaming hours ever. As such I'm most interested to see what they do next, and with an open world setting I think we can expect good things from them.

Gat's original price was like, 20 dollars, right? Or 15? It was priced as an expansion, just sold in a package that allowed you to play it alone.

I'm keeping my eyes on this. Could be interesting.
Indeed, I'd like to see where this goes. Unfortunately, I keep hoping for a SR style game I can play with my friends. Since we rarely group in a body of less than 3, I can't really play SRs 2-IV/Gat with them, but I'd love something GTA V style done by Volition instead.

But Saints Row style with pulp Cheese? Interested.
