Walking Dead Game Jam Starts All Out War

Just don't call it that. Or Walking Dead. Probably not a good idea to use the art assets either.

Robert Kirkman's Walking Dead is hitting its 10 year anniversary, and in honor of the occasion a new Game Jam is kicking off: All Out War. Fancy yourself a games developer? You have until October 2nd to register, and October 10th to submit your game to the competition. The winners get all kinds of swag - even a potential Steam Greenlight key - while the grand prize winner gets Kirkman's personal endorsement.

There are one or two rules. It has to be a Unity 3D game - comp copies are available, if you've already used up your Unity demo - and while the theme is Walking Dead, you'd better not call it that. All Out War is a reference to the power struggle between the Hilltop, Alexandria, the Saviors and the Kingdom, but you can't use the name All Out War, nor can you use any of the story's characters, plot, art or associated brands. "Too many issues would arise for us legally," say the competition organizers, "so we decided to keep this simple and disallow use of The Walking Dead and its world in the competition." It doesn't even have to be a zombie game; it just has to feature All Out War. If it's a Pizzapocalypse, fine; just don't call it an All Out War On Pizza. That would be a step too far.

So, the teams have to make a game with a Walking Dead / All Out War theme, but not actually reference either or anything associated with the IPs, and it doesn't even have to be the same genre? But it has to be a Walking Dead / All Out War game. I'm confused.

Uh... the free version doesn't expire. Unity Pro has a 30-day trial, but you can make a full game in the free version. There's some feature limitations, but probably nothing that anyone's likely to run into during a short game jam like this.

P.S. Thanks

Sounds like the group organizing this Game Jam, just happened to notice that their event was happening around TWD's aniversary and decided they'd use the connection for extra hits and publicity. Kinda tacky.
