Damn it WoW, where have you been when I was 16...
just wonder if would you be this cavalier if it were a 35 year old man and a 16 year old girl?

Yet more evidence that the U.S. policy on the age of consent is archaic and in serious need of revision.
it does? why?

again, referencing above, what if it were a reverse situation? and where do we draw the line? age 15? age 14?

we have to have standards and you can very quickly get into very deep, murky waters when you start suggesting that laws regarding sex with minors need to be revised.
I say if you can be tried as an adult, you deserve adult privileges. I'm betting this kid would be tried as an adult for murder, armed robbery, possibly even drug possession and theft. So let him have his fun, then. I find the idea of "enticing" a 16-year-old male into having sex to be fairly ludicrous; sex is what you use to entice male teens to commit crimes, not something you entice them into.

Statutory rape is a funny thing in the states. Would be perfectly legal to hit it here.

Silly americans.
There's probably some guy in a country where 12 is the age of consent who thinks you're just as silly.

You don't realize that we must think for all of the teenagers how most of them think.
Well my experience is that most of them are pretty vile and stupid :D
But that's just me I guess, the thing is that people that wouldn't do this sort of thing normally would if they got the legal window to do so.
Now have you ever talked to a rape victim? I got about 2 friends that where raped and abused by their boyfriends who were in fact about 5 years older then they were.
Now we wouldn't see a rate in rape fall down because we would allow that, hell no.
Most rapists rape because they want power, they want to humiliate people.
While the creepy perverts down in Cinemax just want to get in your little sisters panties.
you'll never really stop the rapists who want power
(with out a bullet)
but that's hardly a reason to say that no one under 18 can have sex
and rape is rape it's illegal across the board, no matter who you do it to
I'm saying that consensual sex shouldn't be a crime

so like I came up with in the last comment. ut
don't necessarily do away with the age line but give the minor the power to grant consent.
is what I should have said in my first comment
that way I wouldn't sound like such an idiot
I don't mind.
It's fact that young girls can and will do something extremely stupid.
Try being a father, now think , would you want your young daughter (lets say 16)to be having sex with older men?
If you meant it in a way that well a 14 year old girl and a 15 year old boy ,then I consider it okay.
But these laws can be taken and used for corrupt things.
I guess I have trouble looking at it like that
I like to think I'd be the cool parent though
If she wanted to be with someone older I don't think I'd have a problem

but I'm not a parent so I don't know
No, you would be the creepy guy who lets her daughter date older men.
Imagine a little beautiful girl which you love with all your heart and you would give your life for her.
Now imagine a thirty year old sweaty man over that moaning.
You see, I'm telling you that you would be a pretty shitty parent if you didn't protect your child against people like this.
It's what parents do.
Uh, I hate to break it to you, but the type of parents (fathers seem particularly prone to it) that find that image particularly disturbing are unlikely to worry too much about the man's age as such.

You mean that sweaty horny little teenager wants my daughter?
I DON'T THINK SO!

Does an age difference make it seem more disturbing? Sure.
But it's generally disturbing to think about your children (and girls in particular) having sex.

Meanwhile, I'm in the UK right now, and have somehow ended up with a lot of underage friends that are a lot younger than me.
That creeps me out somewhat, but those around me don't seem to care.
It certainly forces me to be vigilant though, especially considering the weird things they suggest sometimes.
It's all well and good blaming the 'adult' in the situation, but as the adult, you sometimes find yourself between a rock and a hard place, so to speak when you have young friends.
they won't get in trouble if somebody gets the wrong idea about the situation, but I will...
And I doubt anyone will have much sympathy for how much of a challenge that can be at times. If I slip up even a little bit, I could get in a lot of trouble.
(Keep in mind as far as the laws here are concerned it doesn't have to be outright sex... Anything suggestive of it is already enough to cause problems. A stray kiss, a misconstrued hug... Any number of perfectly innocent things could be taken to imply something unacceptable. Hell, even the mere fact that I let them into my house sometimes can get people suspicious.)

In any event, amongst other things I checked up on the details of UK law...

And there's 3 parts to it, with 3 different ages involved;

The age of consent is 16 - It's legal for people over 16 to have sex regardless of age.
However, there is a condition here; If one of the people is over 18, they CANNOT be considered to be in a position of trust. (This means parents, teachers, carers, doctors, councillors, and so on.)

Aside from this, under the age of 16 it's illegal for anyone to have sex, but this generally isn't enforced if both are under 16, or if they're close in age (say one is 15, the other is 16 or 17)

Then, finally, there's under 12's. Anyone, regardless of age, having sex with anyone under 12 will get in trouble...
Doesn't matter if it's a 12 year old and a 13 year old, or a 10 year old and a 30 year old.

And you know what? This makes sense to me for the most part.

I doubt any 12 year old is even physically mature, let alone mentally mature...
A 16 year old meanwhile, has, in many cases at least some physical maturity...
And it's difficult to ask for much more than that, because even a 30 year old doesn't necessarily know what they're doing.
Mental maturity simply isn't a predictable function of age (Two people with the same age aren't necessarily equally responsible and mature in how they behave. And the variation can be quite extreme.), while physical maturity generally is much easier to understand.

Not all 16 year olds have really even started puberty at that age, but statistically, most of them of them have developed physically by that age.

Anyway, beyond that, 18 and 21 are extremely arbitrary ages; Last I saw, the science suggested brain development peaked at about 25...
So is someone under 25 then still a child?

Arbitrary, Arbitrary. Arbitrary.

Fuck! I would let them through with the kinkiest stuff, the thing is that older men seeking the company of women who are much younger then him is a serious problem.
Lets put this to practice!
You have a dauther who's 15.
Yes 15.
Suddenly she introduces you her boyfriend who is 25.
You know exactly what the boy wants and that he will most likely use her as a dirty rag and might even abuse her to boot.

So personally I would introduce a law that would let everyone have sex, except when your under 18 then you can only have sex with people on that age range.
Example:A 16 year old girl has sex with an 18 year old teen, A-Ok.

You know exactly what the boy wants and that he will most likely use her as a dirty rag and might even abuse her to boot.
I don't know.
Yes, in the case where it's obvious that the older boyfriend is abusive, sure.
And generally, I don't like the idea of older people that explicitly go looking for a young person. That just reeks of abuse, since you really have to wonder why this person went out of their way to find someone so much younger than they are.
Trouble is, I would be just as concerned about a 15 year old boyfriend potentially being abusive.
Abuse is abuse, regardless of the age of the person doing it.

But the thing is, strange stuff can happen, and not every situation is abuse by definition.
(Though I would think that in all probability if they really feel strongly about each-other I feel they can probably wait it out. - Though that too can still cause problems.)
Age differences too are a funny thing in general.

Consider your hypothetical 15 year old daughter...
Except now she's 25, and going out with a 35 year old...
Suddenly it's not so creepy anymore, if still a little weird.

How about later? They really loved eachother, got married...
So now there's a 45 year old woman married to a 55 year old man.
Does that even register to most people?
And yet if you follow that backwards you realise the older person was 20 when the younger was only 10...
But I digress.

I just don't think judgements based on a person's age should trump more fundamental issues about what kind of person they are.
You want to protect your children from harm, whatever it may be...

Incedentally,

So personally I would introduce a law that would let everyone have sex, except when your under 18 then you can only have sex with people on that age range.
Example:A 16 year old girl has sex with an 18 year old teen, A-Ok.
What you're describing here is pretty much what the UK law says.
Only replace 16 with 12, and 18 with 16.
(a 15 year old can have sex with a 13 year old without anyone really worrying about it too much. But a 19 year old can't have sex with either of them.)

So the principle you're describing with the law is quite valid, but there are disagreements about the ages involved.

Would you like pedophiles running around abusing this law? Because if you do then you do like pedophiles.
Sorry but the law as it is right now is quite good, it leaves the pedophiles a small window of opurtunity and in some cases it makes sure that they're mature enough to start having sex.
And frankly I don't like your arguement that it's okay having sex with minors.

16 is perfectly legal in England, you fussy Americans.

The FBI needs to realise the so called victim is probably quite pleased with all this, no-one cares.
I was just thinking this. The boy isn't grinning and grabbing his crotch because he feels violated, silly FBI.

And there's 3 parts to it, with 3 different ages involved;

Arbitrary.
Personally if I had a daughter then I wouldn't care if a boy on the same age as her would be having sex with her.

Excuse me for saying this, but you do sound like you're okay with someone who is much older having sex with someone who's much younger.
I pretty much think people over-react to this whole thing in a way that does more harm than good.

So yeah, if you want to infer from it that I support paedophiles, go right ahead.

But there's a big difference between not being too concerned about who a 16 year old has sex with, and supporting the idea that it's ok for someone to have sex with a 5 year old.

Puberty exists for a reason, and I find it rather disturbing that people lump children and teenagers in together as if it's all the same thing.

Aside from which, abuse is abuse. As I've said repeatedly.

Is it OK for a 16 year old to abuse another 16 year old?
What has this really got to do with age ultimately?

Edit: Also, bit about 12 and 16... that IS the law (in the UK), and I'm fine with that. (just in case it was leading to any confusion.)

One subpoena later, Jenkins found herself indicted for the charge of "using the Internet to entice an underage person into sexual activity."
I find that an odd way to word the charge, considering that she didn't have a surefire way to know that he wasn't 20 when they met in WoW, even if she lied about her own age as well, but it was absolutely stupid of her (and him, though he's a minor) to continue their relationship after the age reveals when they met since it is against the law even if it's consensual.
