Well, you're either a liar or a moron. I'm leaning towards liar.

Nobody's stupid enough to think, "Well, I just politely asked that woman to not touch the glass and she yelled at me! I must consult the Internet and see if I was truly rude!" You know what you said and what tone you used. You already pretty much know if you were being rude. Your thread only portrayed you in the best light, so it's safe to assume that you know if you will receive punishment.

There's no reason for this thread to exist other than for you to get asspats because 'omg teh ladi waz meanz!' and if you're fired for it, you get to come back and say, "Well, Escapist, that crazy lady got me fired! I was only polite! DDDD:" and then the manchildren here will attempt to get you to do stupid things to get revenge.

This thread is bad and you should feel bad.

The nerve of you, that women is entitled to touch whatever the hell she wants. How can you, a filthy commoner, deny that goddess among mortals the right that she, and she alone possesses.

Windows of the building?

No problem, its fine to ask patrons not to smear them 10 minutes before the building closes.

Windows on the display case? Clean it after the store closes, like every other clerk in the world.

That was incredibly rude, you monster.

No, but seriously I think that the woman was over reacting just a little bit.

What we've got here is a big misunderstaning. It is very, very, easy to sound aggresive when telling people to stop doing things. You need to pick your words carefully and make sure your tone is not hostile, or else you'll sound like an asshole, even if the request is reasonable. This is why we need to hurry up and figure out telepathy. Words just suck.

The facts are simple here. The mother was entirely out of place considering you asked her not to do something that wasn't really required in what she was trying to do, and she continued to do it/had a fit about it. You could've politely explained that regardless of how soon it was after she washed her hands, her fingers have oil on them which will rub off on the glass. Therefore it was rude of her to continue to engage in an activity which would upset her were you to do the same thing within her own house. However, we both know this is a person we're dealing with, and people are, in general stupid and selfish, at least to some degree. You're going to get a talking-to from your boss since he/she will rationalize 1) the customer is always right, and 2) you could've taken a few minutes to clean it later on.

Bottom line is you didn't do anything wrong. That woman needs to learn some manners/to be more polite. Expect to have to deal with your boss if the lady has the balls to actually file that complaint.

You idiot, you should of pulled out a bazooka strong bad style and turned her into a smoldering crater!
The look on the kids would of been enough to make it worthwhile, let alone the satisfaction of killing an absolute ****.

I honestly would just leave it alone, why people keep this nonsense up is beyond me, but in your position I would of stayed quiet, and what the hell is a few fingerprints that may or may not be visible have any affect on your pay at all?

Then again I know many bosses can be asses when it comes to making their stores look like a freaking utopia of goods.

I would need to be there to hear it, yours and her tone could have a big impact on my decision, if you'd been calm and courteous and she was crazy, I'd side with you, if you'd been gruff and curt, where as she'd be sort of exasperated/stressed (she does have young children) I'd side with her.

Whether rude or not, you did the right thing. The fact that you told the kid not to means that you should definately tell the mother not to either. That'd put all sorts of ideas into his/her little head.

No, you weren't rude at all. Personally, it appears as if that woman has a stick up her butt.

You were not rude in the least.
Either
A) the lady was having a bad day
B) she was a *****
I wonder how the kids will grow up...

Hell no, I give you props for speaking out, and she had no right to state that she will file a complain about you, just because they're a customer doesn't mean they can get away with disrespecting the employees and their duties.

Fuck that shit, I would punch whoever came up with that because the majority of customers are shit/retarded/pissy/rude and us who work with customers have to put up with it.

EDIT: That said, I hate these kinds of threads, you obviously know you weren't rude, you are just looking for people to agree with you.
LOL we all wanna tell a story from time to time.

just to repeat every one else who posted before me, no, you weren't rude, she was, but then again, in the service industry you are basically risking being annoyed by idiots

Not at all, she was. That kid is lucky they have their Grandmother to them some manners, since their mother obviously seems incapable of doing so.

I've worked in the customer service business for years. And I'm sure you've realized like I have, that a majority of the public are a bunch of idiots (I'm being nice.)
I work in a deli and we have signs and a display case telling our customers whats on sale this week, and after waiting in line for at least 5 minutes (the time they could have used to figure things out on their own) They still insist on asking what we have for sale.
And even though they have no clue what they're talking about.....sadly the customer is always right. There really is no helping it unless you have a boss that likes to shun the customer as much as you do.
But to answer your question, no you weren't rude. She was just another idiot amongst the masses that need to make a big stink out of trivial B.S.
But sadly, it was your fault for having the windows done relatively early. I understand you wanna leave work ASAP but it all falls under Murphy's law "Anything that can go wrong, will."
So you asking them to not touch the glass was as pointless as doing the windows early.
Unfortunately it's a double edged sword. You're right. The stupid hag is right.(About you being able to do the glass again, her "clean hands" have no weight in the argument.)
But on a personal standpoint, I'm going to side with you, because I understand the pain, and frustration that come with customer service.

I agree with you, and some folk take offense at the silliest thing. I would suggest, however, taping a sign reading "Please Do Not Touch The Glass," up. Less to clean up and, if some snotty tart wants to get all uppity about it, you can say that it's management (Or Corporate's) decision, and that you'd rather not lose your job.

In my experience, women tend to be the most reactive towards any form of criticism, making them come off as bitches, witch, let's face it, is more often than not true

the words were not. You probably were, as you are likely someone teen-aged to early twenties. My evidence for this is that you work in a cookie shop in a mall. If I am wrong and you are a fully-fledged adult, you have made a great many mistakes in your life. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume your are in the younger age group. As such, you most probably said your polite statement in a disrespectful tone, angering the woman.

Was the woman being overly sensitive or perhaps even bitchy? Yes.

So fuck that *****, have yourself a cookie!
