Wasteland 1 Coming to GOG and Steam

Wasteland, the post-apocalyptic RPG that inspired Fallout, is getting a separate release after all.

It was good news and bad news last year [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118358-Buy-Wasteland-2-Get-Wasteland-1] when Brian Fargo announced that Wasteland 2, currently in the works at inXile Entertainment, would include a copy of the original Wasteland - but that under EA's terms of licensing, it wouldn't be re-released as a stand-alone game. Today, however, it's all good news.

"As you may know, we had a deal in place with EA to give all our Wasteland 2 backers (including late backers) a copy of Wasteland 1, which was to be integrated and launched from the game's menu like the original Bard's Tale trilogy into the new Bard's Tale," Fargo wrote in the latest Wasteland 2 Kickstarter update.

"We recently went to talk with EA to try and get it out in a different, separate format, and they accommodated our idea," he continued. "We've now inked a new deal where we'll be able to release Wasteland 1 separately. After getting the game in our hands and ensuring it runs on modern machines, we plan to distribute it FOR FREE to all our backers before Wasteland 2's release, as well as sell it on GOG.com and Steam."

No date or pricing info has been released but the simple fact that it's happening is pretty exciting news. Wasteland is a seriously retro slice of gaming by any measure, but it's a great game (even if only from a historical perspective) that's been out of the reach of gamers for far too long.

Oh, and since we're talking about it, here are a few new Wasteland 2 screens and a character portrait to enjoy. Enjoy!

Sweeeet. I'm excited to hell for Wasteland 2. I'll definitely be picking up the first one but I doubt I'll play it. Its a bit too old school for me.

If you ever tried the old fallout games, it is worth a shot. You may be surprised how fun those really old school games can be.


On another note, I had completely forgotten about wasteland 2. Lookin' good so for.

I have and I just can't get into them. I managed to enjoy the second a little bit but I get my ass kicked way too often hehe.
I'll give them another few dozen or so shots and see if I can get my skill up/

just look up how to get followers. if you manage to get the whole set in fallout 1 (since there is no limit), Everything but mariposa is much easier. Especially if you save-scum. That'll solve the difficulty bit to an extent. Fallout is a bit different from more recent rpg trends though, so I can see if it's odd adjusting to this style. Just think about it more like a tabletop RPG and go like that.
To clarify, Mariposa is the last area (or penultimate, you need to hit 2 spots). in the game where if you don't have power armor mutants will 1 shot you with miniguns if you try to shoot your way in.

I've read the fallout wiki for the first two games so I know all about the areas, story and enemies. I just have an unfortunate habit of accidentally attacking someone I'm not supposed to and having the entire town jump down my throat at a low level.

Having played most of the Fallout series (except for Tactics and the other which shall not be named), I'm interested to add more old-school cRPGs into my library. I'm ashamed that I haven't started/finished the other franchises like Torment, Icewind Dale or Baldur's Gate yet. They take too long and sure can kick the player's arse. Not that that's a bad thing.

Looking forward to Wasteland 2 and will definitely get the first one when it's available digitally.

Wasteland 2 definitely looks like a way to be old school Fallout without using the name. Furthermore, I'm STILL astounded at how great games on the Unity Engine can look despite being developed on a shoestring.

Wasteland is an old, ugly, slow loading game. Although the last issue is probably mitigated by having it in RAM.

It is however a game with a level of player agency that will make most post 2000 productions envious. I certainly understand if most people can't get into it, but I would recommend at least taking a look at some of the let's plays available.

The only involvement EA has with this is that they currently own the rights to the original Wasteland. The game was made by Interplay and the sequel is made by inXile, the company the Brian Fargo founded after he left Interplay (which he also founded).

I played it quite a bit a couple of years ago and to be honest, i think it's a bit rubbish. I love old-school Rpgs, actually i prefer them over post Diablo releases, but i just never saw the appeal in Wasteland.

I played the heck out of the original Wasteland. I've still got my original floppies around here, and even the hint book. It was the second game I really, really got into, right after Starflight. Starflight, by the way, was an EA game, back when EA was much, much smaller company back in 1986.

So stoked for Wasteland 2, looking forward to it!

I haven't played the first Wasteland so with Wasteland 2 in the near future I think it's the opportune time for me to check the previous game out.

Now the only question is if I will tolerate the older graphics.

That is cool. To see the value add and know I will essentially be getting a second game for backing. Now if I were not still dismayed knowing that W2 is going to be in this tired and worn out isometric view that effectively kills any sort of ambition I had to play it.

I do not have to have bleeding edge graphics. But isometric viewpoint is perhaps the easiest way to counter immersion, if not its very definition.

Is it turn based combat? Similar to xcom enemy unknown? I might give this a look. What year was it released?
