Wasteland 2 Kickstarter Breaks $1 Million

The Wasteland 2 Kickstarter has blown past its goal in just two days.

On March 13, the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter Wasteland [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/116290-Wasteland-2-Kickstarter-Explodes-Like-a-Blood-Sausage], the Big Daddy of post-apocalyptic RPGs. At some point during the wee hours of March 15, it was mission accomplished, as gamers around the world ponied up their 900 large and then just kept on giving. Funding broke the $1 million mark earlier today, and it just keeps climbing.

That's fantastic news for Brian Fargo and his fellows at inXile, and of course long-suffering Wasteland fans and post-apoc aficionados who have never sampled the joys of the original. It's also good news for the game development scene as a whole, as it goes a long way toward putting to rest concerns that the outrageous success of the Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter [http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/66710809/double-fine-adventure] was some kind of one-time aberration.

Fargo, while no doubt thrilled, also expressed disappointment, perhaps just slightly tongue-in-cheek, that people don't seem overly enthralled by the $2500 supporter tier, which includes an "exploded blood sausage Wasteland limited signed and numbered collectible figurine" as its centerpiece. The cost clearly isn't the issue; the $5000 tier has seven backers and the $10,000 tier has eight. Instead, he put it down to poor marketing.

"We have sure done a bad job conveying the $2,500 tier as there are no takers. People probably think it is literally a sausage statue," he wrote on Twitter [https://twitter.com/#!/brianfargo]. "The statue is of a creature being blown apart... blood sausage style!"

[I actually think an official Wasteland 2 Exploded Blood Sausage Statue would be pretty awesome, but that's just me.]

The great thing is that 32 days remain on the Kickstarter clock, so there's still plenty of time to throw money at this thing and help make it even better. You can toss your nickel into the hat at kickstarter.com [http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2].

Good. Wasteland was a game waaaaay ahead of its time and its like has sadly died out for the most part. It deserves a proper sequel. In general, turn based tactical games have been mostly relegated to C-list productions from no-name studios, riddled with bugs and of generally poor quality. But now we're getting the new XCOM (the proper one, not the shooter) and here's Wasteland 2 looking like it'll finally get off the ground.

Considering I learned today that I might lose my house in the next few months, every piece of good news counts...

Sadly it is still kind of a "special case".

There's a kickstarter for an old-school tactical shooter going on right now, and it's not doing so hot [http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/355932838/crowdsourced-hardcore-tactical-shooter?ref=live]. Which is a shame. Then again, I haven't seen it on many news sites, so that might be a factor. Or he might simply not be as "famous" as Tim Schafer or Brian Fargo.

Anyway, congrats to Fargo. At least we'll still be getting an old-school RPG out of all this.

This makes me massively happy. The idea of Wasteland 2 getting made is fantastic. Loved the game way back in the before time.

I hadn't heard of this one. Anyone submitted anything to news sites? Got a bit of promotion going?

The ways he describes it Wasteland 2 will have similar gameplay to the original 2 Fallouts. IF thats the case I am beyond on board. But I honestly can't get into something that plays like the original wasteland.

Maybe it isn't doing so hot because when people hear "tactical shooters", they think "Great, another hide-behind-walls FPS", and that we have a gazillion of those?

Probably. The word "tactical" has been misused quite a bit for games. The last proper tactical FPS we got was SWAT 4, way back in... 2004, I think.

I saw it on Kotaku not too long ago, and I think Gamasutra ran something for it. Apart from that... I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else.

Honestly, he showed pictures of Counterstrike on the website, and Ghost Reacon 2 in the video, and I despise them both as I can't see the difference of these and the standard "realistic FPS" that is CoD/MW.
I'll gladly have a third-person, team-based tactical shooter, though, like old Syndicate.

Thanks for the link, though. I'll try to share it in a firearms forum I know, they might want to support a tactical game and save the genre before usual shooters drown them.

That's because Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter shares it's DNA with SWAT, original Ghost Recon games and Rainbow Six.

Try to play GRAW like you play CoD. It might not be like the original GR but it's not that far.

Also, your comment is invalid for using "realistic" in the same sentence as Call of Duty ;D

Well I just posted an article about that game you mentioned on the site I write for; but yer it sucks that it isn't getting the same attention as say the game in this article. Shame really as I don't think they will get the $200,000 they want and I'd really like another game like SWAT 4 or a similar such game.

For $2500 I want Brian Fargo to cook me a blood sausage. And then eat it. I hate blood sausage, Brian Fargo, why did you cook me this?

Did you watch the video Tim posted on the DF fundraiser shortly before it was over? I haven't because I have a credit card on account of being a productive member of society, but it might help you with that.

I kind of thought $2.5 k would be a statuette of the donor being blown apart. That would be nifty.

You can use a debit card or prepaid credit card with Amazon Payments (which Kickstarter use).

There are more details on possible payment options in the FAQ at the bottom of the page http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2 .
EDIT stupid full stop messing up URL
