Watch People Hilariously Misidentify Smash Bros Classic Characters

Apparently lots and lots of people have never heard of your favorite characters

Do we spend too much time lauding the heroes of video games past? A new viral clip suggests we may not be spending enough: YouTuber Super Smash Bros [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmJyp7qrztjH8GVCJxoM8xQ] - and the results may shock you.

Sure, everyone recognizes Mario, (almost) everyone knows Luigi and everyone recognizes Link - even if they still think his name is "Zelda." But after that things get interesting (and funny!) Apparently none of the interviewees recognized Punch-Out's Little Mac, and the very existence of Fire Emblem or its Smash-returning fighters seems to baffle most. Kirby is well-remembered, but his nemeses King Dedede and Meta Knight? Not so much.

Samus Aran? Alternately misidentified as "Metroid" or "A Power Ranger." Captain Falcon? "Is that The Flash?" Ganondorf? "Some Irish dude?" Even relatively-recent creation Rosalina gets tagged more as "Elsa" [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/8507-Frozen] than as herself. And it's not just Nintendo's retro-icons they couldn't place: Mega Man doesn't seem to have the recognition he used to, either.

Still, the lack of recognition doesn't seem to be hurting sales: Super Smash Bros is now the fastest-selling Wii U title ever, boasting 490,000 copies moved in its first three days of U.S. release - not bad for a game starring "A Power Ranger," "Some Irish dude" and Mario's brother "Larry."

If Samus was a Power Ranger then it would have made the show more intresting.

I'm surprised more people know who Astro Boy, especially since he and Megaman have similar origins. Also, how is it everyone knows Legend of Zelda, but they don't know...Zelda?

I am actually more impressed by the universality of Mario. You can guess that most of the people that immediately recognized him likely haven't touched a controller.

Not surprised by the results though. The ever increasing roster of characters means they had to move past the really familiar faces years ago... I know several "hardcore gamers" that would have a tough time identifying Shulk, Marth, Palutena or Lucario.

I kinda get bent out of shape when people misidentify things, so the video was more or less one of my pet-peeves come to life.....

Then again, I'm a massive video-game and Nintendo nerd, so I'm assuming it's just me who doesn't like it when people misidentify things......

It's easy for us to forget how even the most iconic of characters in our gamer culture is a complete anomaly to people outside of gamer culture. XD Anyone else remember the episode of Jeopardy where none of the contestants were able to get the answer "who is donkey kong"?

Surprised there was virtually no recognition for certain characters like Pit and such, though understandable I bet I wouldn't be able to identify a third to half the characters in Smash Bros if I didn't have the game.

Agreed, and this goes the other way as well. How well would the average gamer do if you showed them a bunch of pictures of sports stars or late night comedians or Hollywood celebrities? Nothing surprising or amusing about this - heck, I doubt I'd score better than 50%, because I could care less about older Nintendo IPs.

Bah I couldn't name most of them either who the hell still plays Nintendo consoles in the real world and not internet forums? I've never even seen a Nintendo console in the flesh till the Wii and even then only in store displays.

(goes back to his Master System, Amiga 1200, PlayStation collection and PC)

Amen, brother. Those Nintendo jokers think every gamer alive either knows Nintendo shit like the back of their hand or is a CoD kid.

I got all but one, and I have been playing this game every day since it came out. I love this game, but that roster is just too big to remember

Out of curiosity, which one was the one you missed? I nearly missed a few myself, but just scrapped through.

I wouldn't recognise any of them apart from the obvious ones like Mario and Peaches either, never played any Smash Brothers game in my life and never played enough Nintendo games to recognise most of them either and I have been playing games for over 25yrs.

Amiga Master Race checking in! Even among the console players back when I was young hardly none of my friends had a Nintendo system apart from handhelds, I never knew anyone that had a NES and only two had a SNES. Everyone else had C64s, A500/A600/A1200s, Master systems, Megadrives and pre Pentium 386/486 PCs and after '95 most people that I knew that played games had a Playstation (only one guy had a N64).

I think more people I knew had a CD-i than a Nintendo console! Apart from Handhelds, most people with a handheld had a Gameboy and almost no-one had a Game Gear apart from one girl that had one and a TV adaptor which everyone thought was the shit with its colour and being able to watch TV.

Until we saw how the batteries lasted an hour and we realised it was simply shit instead of being the shit.
