The ODST's are the equivalent of the Marines (not just the US ones godamnit) in the Halo universe.
Normal Marines in Halo (called Marines because space ships count as Navy technically) - Army.
ODST's - Marines.
Pelican and Hornet Pilots - Air force.
Space Ship Pilots - Navy.
are you sure? i believe that they are all pretty much marines. and the Marines are called Marines!
Modern day earth has nothing that can compare with the ODST
Of course it does. The roles taken by each of them match roles to the Military of today.
The 'Marines' are basic foot soldiers trained in conventional warfare (which in this case includes drop ships such as Pelicans) they use tanks and vehicles and are general infantry. Just like the army of today.
The ODST's are an elite fighting force trained in assault warfare in Halo this is the use of drop pods, they are better trained and better equipped. Just like Marines, who are an assault force, mainly based around beach assaults.
The Air Force is self explanatory.
The Navy are transporters and mobile defence craft just like boats. The difference is that they defend space rather than a planets ocean. They are a place to transport soldiers, weapons and vehicles just like in real life.

I think if you would compare ODST to something today they would be more of the Delta Force or Navy Seals. ODST are the elite marines.
Hmmm. I see what you mean, but bear in mind that there are a fair amount of ODST's compared to normal Marines in the Halo universe.
Just like the Marines are smaller than the Army but still fairly large.
I'd say Spartans are more like Delta, Navy Seals and SAS. If you read the books anyway, as they are not really anything like they are in the Halo games. They are fairly stealth based.
