Weapon Switching, and how NOT to do it.

Let me start, by saying that I love most of the games I'm going to rant about, but there could be improvements in the weapon switching category.

Okay, lets begin. Halo, Saints Row 2, Fable 2. All of them examples, on how to treat combat and weapon switching correctly. Fallout 3, Half Life 2, GTAIV. Not so much.

If say, in Halo. I'm Assault Rifling a few grunts, and all of a sudden, a Sniper Rifle shot from a Jackal goes overhead, and I'm wanting to return fire, before he takes a 2nd shot. I press Y to change to my other weapon, (Usually BR, or Sniper Rifle) and return fire.
If say, in Saints Row 2, if I'm having a fight to the death with Ultor, and I'm machine gunning down a ton of guys, and a Helicopter flies overhead, I press B, move the thumbstick to the RPG, and take down the Chopper.
If say, in Fable 2, I'm slashing up a bunch of bandits, and a Rifleman pops up, I turn around and shoot him at the touch of a single button and a move of the joystick.

If I'm in Megaton, playing Fallout 3. Killing all the residents of the place before I nuke it. I don't want to have to press B, to change my weapon, everytime I go for a kill at different ranges. Craterside supply was a good example. I'm pinned down, low health. So I back into there, take a few stimpacks. Then 6-7 residents swarm me. 3 with guns, the mercenary who was already there, and 4 with Melee. Am I expected to get slashed to death because I'm firing and can't use Melee weapons to defend myself properly, or get shots to death, because I'm too busy swinging my chinese sword at the melee opponents. Granted theres the Hotkey function, but remembering 8 different button presses is annoying, not to mention the fact that at least 2-3 times in the Story, you have to re-assign your buttons because your weapons are stripped from you.
If I'm in Half Life, and a group of Combine swing around the corner. While I'm Sniping down a few on the Horizon, I don't want to have to switch to a whole new set of weapons, to throw 1-2 grenades.
If I'm in GTAIV, and I'm in a shootout with Cops in the middle of Star Junction, and a Annhialator swings on overhead, I don't want to have to cycle through weapons, to change from Pistol to RPG. Granted they tried to make an option for the D-Pad accessable, but remember all the button layouts, with only a one time hint to go by, was a pain in the ass to say the least.

Fallout 3's weapon switching was IMO decent. I only had to use four different buttons most of the time to switch between guns.

Saint Row 2's weapon switching system was IMO pretty bad. I remember it being to unprecise.

I have HL2 for both 360 and PC. The PC version I can do pretty easily with a key assigned to each weapon, so I can switch between sets and weapons at the same time. The 360 Version just uses the D-pad and press direction to change class, then press as many more times to switch from the first weapon in that set. Controls are an opinion thing; PCs let you change them to your liking, too. You can live with games with editable controls, but those that aren't i.e. most on the 360, you might have a larger problem. I would like Halo 3 on the PC soon...

I totally agree about GTA 4. I don't know how much health I've lost while Niko stands in the middle of a swarm of police using him for target practice, while I'm madly mashing the D-Pad looking for the assault rifle.

(I can already see it creeping up. But I'm talking about how it should be done on Consoles, not PC's :p)

Fable 2 was excellent for weapon switching. On t'other hand, morrowind was terrible. You had to go into your menu and equip it, which stopped the action. Oblivion was a bit better with the hotkeys i spose, but you could only choose 8 items to hotkey.

I guess that you only play Xbox so that why you would complain when you get crappy controls because of a button limit, than on a PC version. Halo really isn't a good example because you can only carry two weapons, so how could they screw it up?

I'm not much of a Fallout fan, but that's what the hotkey system is for. The D-Pad works great on the consoles.

<_< Knew that was coming.

I'm just saying, I don't want to have to cycle through endless weapons. Something CoD and Halo both seem to understand quite well.

Hmm, have only ever played Half-Life (1 and 2) on the PC so don't know what the weapon selection was like on the consoles. It was easily one of the best weapon selection systems I'd used in a long time, especially once you knew what was in each category. Snap!

For console Fallout 3, all you really need to do is set a direction for your general use weapon, one for long-range, one for close-range, and one for your emergency highest-power fuck-'em-all weapon, and you're good. You don't usually need more guns than that, and if you do, you've got a fully-functioning inventory screen. Even then, is it really that hard to remember eight different weapons? Really?

On topic, I had the misfortune of playing Shellshock 2. In that game, you've got a slot for a knife, a slot for a pistol, and a slot for all other weapons, which you swapped between with left and right on the D-pad. This isn't a horrible way of doing things. The problem is, that the order in which they're arranged seems to change every level. You might be using knife>pistol>rifle one chapter, and the next, it's inexplicably changed to knife>rifle>pistol. What the hell, Rebellion?

So, you don't like having freedom and choice when it comes to your weapon loadout? Then only carry one weapon. You don't really need to horde them...

If dealing with 8 hotkeys was too much for you, i'm honestly surprised that you managed to string together the 26 characters in the English language plus a few punctuational odds and ends together into this post

To be fair, I'm quit sure I didn't use W, X, Y or Z.

Edit: Scratch that. I did.

I must say that the best weapon-switch system I've ever seen is in the Ratchet and Clank games. Triangle gives you a small menu of your weapons and gadgets that you select with the thumbstick. It also freezes time while you're choosing.

and Saint's Row is just a real time version of that system. but don't mess with a good thing, eh?
