And of course, Sony have four mascots - Sackboy, Ratchet, Solid Snake, Kratos. G, PG, M, MA. Everybody's covered.
I think you missed the point of what a mascot is.

Solid Snake a mascot? How is an old one eye guy that wears a grey jumpsuit a mascot?

It seems odd that in 2009 the 2000 console outsells, the 2006 console. Something went wrong somewhere.
Bah, Wii is selling faster than the PS2 which shouldn't be surprising as the PS2 also launched as a more "hardcore" console with a higher price tag. Assuming that Sony is going to win every generation by playing to the peanut gallery is a wrong assumption that Sony should understand better than anybody. Nothing to see here, move along.

Whereas what is essentially an empty suit is?
Wait? Uh what you talking about? Master Chief I guess...

Never said that Master Chief is a mascot.

Mario and Sonic fit the mascot profile. Two characters that go beyond age and call appeal to everyone even outside games.

Does this guy appeal to anyone?

Mario a is stereotype Italian plumber that saves a princess. Its a quirky and silly character that the main public can grasp and like.

What is Solid Snake? A clone/son from the main villain of the story, filled up with nanomachines to fight terrorists and stop a huge weapon that shoots nukes. That is no mascot that the public can grasp or like.

Its not a character that sells consoles. Mario sells consoles. Solid Snake doesn't.

Hahaa just as I was about to name Ratchet and Clank, he beat me to it.
Hes got a point though, Microsoft and Sony should listen to this and rethink their priorities a little more.

We just need a fine line between becoming the Wii (with little appeal to mature gamers outside of Metroid Prime and Madworld) and the PS3 (little appeal to children except for Ratchet and Clank).

SACKBOY!
Sorry for double post but surely Sony has already created a new mascot, he is cutesy, appeals to kids and could potentially become a recognisable figure in the same way that Mario and Sonic are.

Something to think about.

When this video came out LittleBig Planet wasnt still out. He does however have a video about LittleBig Planet and why it didn't meet the expectations of Sony/*developer name here forgot...* when it came out.

He does another episode on LittleBigPlanet as well.

Why not do this on Friday so we can hear from the man himself? (If he wishes to grace us with his movie and bob-ing presence ofcourse)

Sorry for that then, disregard my sackboy statement.
Gonna start watching more of these vids, whilst I dont fully agree with EVERYTHING he says, he does have some scarily realistic theories.

Cause Sonic and Mario have almost no backround.

Solid Snake has, Kratos has.

The public doesn't go "WOW! Solid Snakes saving the world! Awesome!!!" You know why? Cause you have hundreds of same characters doing the same crap: Saving the world.

How many fat, short silly looking, italian plumbers you have saving a princess from some sort of Dino Turtle?

Mario stands out. Solid Snake doesn't stand out.

Again. Mario sells. Solid Snake doesn't.

Tomb Raider stands out cause it has a big breast lady that uses two guns to kill bears and T-Rexes and likes to wear very short shorts. She is also advertised as the female Indiana Jones.

Solid Snake is a guy that wears a grey suit and fights people and some robots.

You see theres no visual appeal to Soild Snake. NONE!

Mario has, Sonic has and even Lara Croft has. Soild Snake as ZERO visual appeal. In a mascot the first thing you do its come up with a timeless concept of a character that can last for yonks in the minds of people and that will stay fresh in some way.

Solid Snake is not a mascot. In his last adventure he looks like someones grandfather in a grey suit.

Sackboy is a mascot. He has the sort of timeless visual appeal. He has no backround cause he needs none. He doesn't need to talk. Its a simple concept that looks good.

Sackboy dressed as Solid Snake does a better mascot than Solid Snake itself. Cause Sackboy doesn't age, sackboy doesn't die, sackboy doesn't talk. Sackboy is a burlap sack that walks around waving is arms looking silly.

Like..every other mascot. A mascot is supposed to look timeless, quirky, wacky and silly. A mascot is supposed to say "Hey this is Fun!".

Solid Snake has none of those qualities. He has no visual appeal. He has nothing to stand out of the crowd.

You can say that Metal Gear Solid as a gaming franchise sells to the "hardcore" gaming demographic. But you cannot say that Solid Snake sells a console on his own.

Parents look at MGS4 cover and see an old guy with a moustache "Does this look fun? Don't think so...". Parents look at Super Mario Galaxy and see a colourfull cover with a wacky character in its cover "Does this look fun? Yes it does."

Who buys Metal Gear Solid 4? People that already know what is Metal Gear Solid, that know the story, the characters, what type of game it is. Who are these people? People with over 17 years old.

These are the people who buy Metal Gear Solid 4, people that know what is Metal Gear Solid, cause they played the previous Metal Gear Solids.

Everyone heard of Super Mario. He is the number 1 most recognized video game character in the world. He is a staple in gaming. Everyone knows Super Mario, even my mother knew who was Super Mario and she never touched a game in her life.

How many people outside gaming knows Solid Snake? Theres a reason why you must explain the "Snake? SNAAAAAAAKE!" joke and not the "Its a me! Mario!". Cause everyone knows who is Super Mario.

Now you're confusing mascot with overexposed.
Mascots are supposed to be overexposed. They're a symbol which represents the company that is regularly used as a representation of who that company are. By gaming companies they traditionally become recognised as faces of the company. I'd agree that Sackboy became Sony's mascot in the push to sell LBP and Mario is obviously Nintendo's mascot. I don't think you can really classify Master chief as a mascot though, because he's a weak visual icon and he isn't really used as a connotation of Xbox, despite being one of the main exclusives. Same goes for Marcus Fenix.

What do you think I meant by the G PG M MA thing? Each one represents something to a specific group. Sackboy is cute, expressive and fun-loving. He has no real goals but those that you make up, and he lives in his own silly world, or all the silly worlds you can think of. Ratchet sells to a slightly older group. He's sarcastic and cocky, and laced with a lot of entendre. He's travelling the galaxy, meeting interesting creatures, and frying them with his nuclear arsenal. He's anthropomorphic, but at the same time very expressive. Past that age, we come to Snake. The worlds greatest soldier, striking from the shadows, and dispatching these grunts any way he see's fit. A gruff, jaded idealist, fighting to free the world. Like Morpheus without the other two movies. His enemies? So very human. Even the most unrealistic have their humanity very much present. Finally, we come to Kratos. Run, all ye beings, for death approaches. He defines violence, he can get woman into bed with a snap of his fingers, and he shows no mercy.

Saying that Mario appeals to everyone is just stupid.
Do you know what a mascot is by the way?

A mascot is something that is supposed to bring good luck. Like a lucky charm. They also suppose to sell/show off a product to everyone, indepent of age/ethnic/sex.

THIS IS A MASCOT:

THIS IS A MASCOT:

THIS IS A MASCOT:

THIS IS NOT A MASCOT:

THIS IS NOT A MASCOT:

Vader is no mascot. I could say that the droids are a mascot but not Vader. Darth Vader is a trademark but not a true mascot.

Even Eddie fits the "Wacky silly character" mascot profile.

Also the Euro 08 mascots are not aimed at children. They just stupid looking.

Have you guys seen the "how to save sonic" episodes? I think we could really save him by using just a few of his ideas. Particularly re-learning level design and killing the cast.

I don't support any measures to try and make Sonic good again. I've already detailed my theory on the balance of games of Sega. If Sonic becomes passable, we'll lose some really exceptional stuff.
What do you mean? You afraid that Sonic is going to steal the spotlight of other games?

What the hell you on about?

It was good. I personally liked his episode where he basically just rambled about Luigi and Daisy.

I have a creeping suspicion that in order to counterbalance the U.S. release of Yakuza 3, Bayonetta and Alpha Protocol, they're going to re-release ET for the Atari 2600.
Wait, Sega's publishing Alpha Protocol? I'm suddenly not looking forward to it anymore.
