As hyped as I am for this and totally going to buy it day one, I was really hoping that when the eventual Xcom 2 was announced that it would have the Aquatoids.
I know. I wanted a giant flying nautilus to wipe out my squad on a cruise ship... bloody Xarquids.

Oooooo yesyesyesyes.

One big question/wild prediction though, is that scene in the trailer where the xcom guys stun the human stormtrooper-meets-overwatch guy supposed to show that the human enemies are just mindslave puppets under alien control? If so that would be pretty sweet because then we would get to go on liberation missions to gain new allies (possibly replacing old recruitment considering the fact that the new xcom wouldn't have nearly the resources or abilities to hire personnel that the old one did)?

Also they've stated 5 revamped classes? does that mean the return of mech trooper alongsaide support, heavy, assault and sniper or is there a new class? Possibly a drone-handler type deal?

Oh man I love the idea of "recovering" enemy soldiers. It would be like Pokemon with prisoners of war, would give a real good reason to pack an arc thrower (or equivalent), would give another dimension to "Terror" missions if they exist too. do you kill turned military humans? to save civilians? would there be a bonus to liberate them all.
oh I am so excited for the possibilities of this.

The 5th class could just Be a drone, or perhaps a stealth/melee class, or now that psions are established there could be a psi-specialist: low combat abilities but all kinds of support powers.

I really like the worldview of "Xcom won... but humanity lost" too, that extra layer of hopelessness and the odds being stacked against you is perfect.
on the other hand taking the route of "99% of your games result in a squad-wipe, total loss or reloading of a save so statistically... I guess that's what happened. deal with it." is fun too.

Nice. You know, I had an idea for an "alien mode" that I posted on the Firaxis forums back not long before the first reboot game came out that was similar to this. X-Com won and the remnants of the alien forces have scattered and gone into hiding, thus the player would have to unite what's left to scrape together a win and take over Earth while keeping their presence hidden.

Hey... wait a second...

Anyway, maybe this will be more or less what I was looking for.

Awesome. I just hope they'll be able to address some of the wonkier issues with the first game. Is it too much to hope that we'll be able to deploy more than a maximum of six soldiers this time around?

F*CK YES! *U** YES!!!!!!!!!
However I turn off with the whole "Aliens won the War" Theme....
What was the point of our Victory in the first X-Com? All the effort for nothing?
To be fair, the original series took an almost perverse pleasure in making your efforts from previous games seem like wasted effort. No matter how many times you thwarted the alien threat, the world gradually turned to shit anyway. Overpopulation, ecological collapse, political upheaval, famine, extremist cults, religious wars and alien toxins all contributed to the world's decline. Eventually the planet is rendered uninhabitable save for a few contained areas like Mega-Primus in X-COM: Apocalypse.

If I was to hazard a guess, I'd say the "good" ending to Enemy Unknown is still canon, but it wasn't enough. The alien "invasion" may have just been a scout force, with the bulk of the fleet arriving a short time afterwards. After all, it was made clear that

The Ethereals were "testing" humanity to see if they were worthy subjects for their experimentation.

Or perhaps it's a different alien empire entirely.
Or there is something in the DLC and the Expansion I didn't knew. I never played them btw, that why I lack the knowledge about them.
Also I realised you will fight humans...

as excited as I am I really hate the cheap "handwave what we already set up to change the story to our needs" approach, particually for something as lame as XCOM now being the "resistance"

like seriously guys?

but its not like EU/EW were real system testers, hell wasn' there a tablet version?

To be fair, the original series had a penchant for doing this: "Hooray! you won and saved the Earth, except now there's another alien threat invading from another dimension, or alternatively, the aliens have devastated the planet as one final middle finger to humanity".

It's not so much handwaving as it is finding out what you did just wasn't good enough, if they go the route of following the temple ship destruction, there's nothing in the original game to indicate that the aliens losing the temple ship would totally defeat them. Depends on where they go with it I guess.

There indeed was a tablet version, the original Xcom was not exactly a system hog. The PC exclusivity likely has little to do with making a game that the Xbox one or PS4 can't run, I would be willing to bet that Xcom 2 could easily run on the current gen systems, it has more to do with the game just not selling enough on consoles to justify porting it.

That said, my current problem with Firaxis is that their games are usually great to pretty good... after an expansion pack or two. Hopefully they deliver on the promises of mod support as the modders tend to make up for the lack of content at release until firaxis gets around to launching an expansion.

As far as I know, it can still be in the canon of the game that we won the battle. The Big Ethereal in the Temple ship stated that they
specifically pushed mankind to adapt and evolve to prepare for "what lies ahead".
It is entirely possible that the aliens we fought in the Enemy Unknown were in fact
preparing us for the main invasion. Perhaps they were a totally different faction?

Double that with weapon choice as well. I hate shotguns, and I get how potentially powerful they are, but it made me overlook the assault for many reasons in my first playthrough. I now see the reason for them, but if I just had more of a choice in what I armed my squad with, There would have been so many more options and so much more fun for me.

EW was hardly pushing the boundries of hardware, it needed 2ghz dual core, 2GB ram and a Nvidia 8800. I hardly see XCOM 2 being a massive step up. Don't be daft, XCOM 2 isn't going to be too much for the consoles to handle. I'm guessing it just didn't sell too well on the consoles rather than it being a hardware issue.

No, instead you will have to recruit them back, and THEN you can lose them back to the aliens!

Double the fun!

You can still equip Assaults with rifles in the base game. I remember having two builds for assaults, one for the rifles and distance, and one for the shotguns. I'd still give them shotguns for Terror missions though.

According to VGChartz, units sold to date by platform were 640k on PC, 600k on 360 and 510k on PS3, so console sales aren't too far off double that of PC sales. Disappointing - I was really looking forward to an XCOM sequel.

So are they going to go hardcore realism and make X-Com into an actual Guerilla/Terrorist organization? Or are they going to just cop out and keep with the 'elite military unit' that has all the civilians not be targets?

Maybe make a game dynamic that has you balance 'public perception' carefully instead of having to worry about the fear level from the first game. Hit too many targets and your public perception moves you towards violent terrorists and people don't support you, but if you stay too passive the aliens gain strength and weaken your position. But make objectives that you have to hit for certain bonuses and objectives that will necessarily raise your terrorist perception, like attacking alien leaders at sporting events or large public gatherings where collateral casualties are almost guaranteed.

Perhaps (hopefully?) new mechanisms and gameplay complexity additions make it impossible to control with four buttons and a thumb stick.

Please - twelve buttons and two thumbsticks, we aren't Neanderthals. :)

The only 'advance' I can think of that would make relatively unwieldy controller issues a concern would be in real-time play, and I hope to hell Firaxis haven't gone down that route.

People keep talking about how the original XCOM is a piece of cake for most computers to run. Imagine my disappointment when upon downloading the demo, the game turned out to be damn near unplayable, with framerates through the roof even with every graphics option turned down low. This on a laptop that played New Vegas and Human Revolution with only a few hiccups.

Kind of upsetting after someone else said you could practically play it on a mobile phone. Oh well, guess I'll add it and the sequel to the to-do list when I eventually get a better laptop.
