human stupidity...

in the form of Famine and War....

Pestilence probably wont show up til after Famine has done his first world tour...

Death will be hanging around the whole time.... but then we're used to him by now...

as for Climate change (Global Warming for those who do not actually know what is going on) i do not believe in man made climate change... i mean CO2 is only half as bad as Methane and we don't go culling all the cows, sheep, gassy people etc...

Hmmm... Personally I think the apocalypse will be brought about by a new strain of super infectious drug resistant virus that will spread throughout the populace of the entire world and kill nearly everyone. There will of course be pockets of living people but without fresh blood they should die out within a generation or two. Especially since most of the uninfected pockets will most likely be monastaries and the like.
i think this is the most viable apocalypse scenario that can happen, just imagine a deadly bacteria or virus with a long incubation period. It spreads all over the world before anyone knows it exists and then its already too late.

The 'black hole in Switzerland thing' is the Large Hadron Collider.

When activated, it is theorized that the collider will produce the elusive Higgs boson, the observation of which could confirm the predictions and missing links in the Standard Model of physics and could explain how other elementary particles acquire properties such as mass.[6][1] The verification of the existence of the Higgs boson would be a significant step in the search for a Grand Unified Theory, which seeks to unify three of the four known fundamental forces: electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force, leaving out only gravity. The Higgs boson may also help to explain why gravitation is so weak compared to the other three forces. In addition to the Higgs boson, other theorized particles, models and states might be produced, and for some searches are planned, including supersymmetric particles[7], compositeness (technicolor)[8], extra dimensions,[9] strangelets[10], micro black holes[11] and magnetic monopoles[12]

Although a few individuals have questioned the safety of the planned experiments in the media and through the courts,[13] the consensus in the scientific community is that there is no basis for any conceivable threat.[14]

The threat is that it is conceivable that this process could produce micro black holes, which would slowly but inevitably suck in Earth.

However, even with disastrous human error, it is incredibly unlikely that this could happen.

Nevertheless, if someone wanted to active a machine that could possibly produce black holes, I'd maybe suggest they watched the TV instead, or something.

I think John Stewart put it best when it comes to the black hole situation. Humanity has always been so arrogant about science that we never stop to ask, "Hey is it a good idea to make black holes in our back yard just to see if we can?". Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for the overwhelming power of science. How else will we dominate the galaxy in the years to come? Economics? Don't be so cliche.

But I digress. The world's end will not be heralded by angels coming down from the sky blowing their trumpets or some massive meteor crashing into the earth again. Our final moments will conclude to the phrase, "Hey, it worked!"

I'm most worried of an Apocalypse I know is coming. For example, if one night I fall asleep and a Nuclear Warhead lands on my house - cool. I didn't know it was coming, when I fell asleep everything was as it normally is.

If a meteor is speeding towards Earth and we are warned about it a couple of weeks before impact - I'd be bricking myself. The fact you know the Apocalypse is coming, and there is nothing you can do about it, is a little worrying.

The Large Hadron Collider, I don't know enough about to worry about. All I know is some people are saying it's the greatest idea ever, and others are pissing themselves about black holes and death. As long as it's an instant Apocalypse deal, I don't mind either way. Hopefully the Earth won't be sucked in slowly, spanning days or weeks.

I am most afraid of the zombie apocalypse. I'd be freaked out even if they were the standard, slow zombies from old school survival horror flicks. It's game over if they're the rabies people from I am Legend or 28 days later.

Great thread.
I am most afraid of the LHC time-traveling into 2012 carrying a strangelet that will devour the world as the polar ice-caps melt and wash us all away.

The human race will tear itself apart by itself.
We mess around with things we dont need to mess about with and we cant leave stuff as it is.
As they say curiosity killed the cat.
That will be ou downfall, we will want to make something beneficial and its going to totally go tits up in our face because we cant leave stuff as it is.

I think itl be a total 28 Days Later/I Am Legend Scenario
Or
Itl Just go tits up.

The Christian apocalypse is fairly crazy. World War 3, followed by a huge Earthquake that hits the whole world, water turning to blood, swarm of demonic locusts, massive hail falling, fire raining from the sky, army of demon horses, then finally the battle of Armageddon. I'm sure something like 3/4 of the worlds population is meant to die during the Apocalypse.

i agree alot with the guy above me, that thing is gonna tell us things that we shouldnt know about... so that makes me think it is more likely we destroy ourselfs with it...
Its gonna be just like fucking Half Life...
Except backwards, 'cause instead of horrific creatures spewing forth and wreaking havoc, we'll all be sucked in. And where will Gordon and his precious bent metal rod be then, eh? Fiction land? Never count on an idol, kids.

I really don't want a Water World Esq Apocalypse. Living on rafts and building my house out of drift wood for the rest of my life would get pretty boring.

Unless that raft had zombies on it.
I'd love a Water World apocalypse. I mentioned this to my girlfriend the other day, and in my dream last night I was going past all these half sunken houses in a boat. It was sweet.

Shame I'm so seasick.

I'd hate the zombie apocalypse, because I know I would have to kill all my former friends as they try to eat me. But what is this with zombie's always eating people - all the zombies you see are usually more rotten, with maybe one or two bites taken out of them, rather than mostly eaten things. Do zombies really eat people, or do they just want like lovebites?

With the invention of virtual sex, real sex is going to stop happenings and as a result, the human race will be wiped out in one generation.
