Ok, some good ones mentioned, glad to see L7, the Breeders, Girlschool, and P.J. Harvey.
I'll add some obvious ones.

Peaches.
Suzie Quatro, yes she was on Happy Days but she is a great rocker 48 Crash and Can the Can still rock the house.
Wanda Jackson, the Queen of Rockabilly.

And some not so obvious.

The Spazzys, Melbourne all girl group, very Ramones influenced.
Your Wedding Night, ok very obscure but worth checking out.
Super Wild horses, very hot now, a great duo.

Oh and the 5,6,7,8's you've seen them in Kill Bill and Shonen Knife.

p.s. The Slits and the G.T.O.s

*edit* Shit shit shit I forgot Patti Smith

If youre going to listen to paramore dont listen to their latest album. Its cack compared to riot and all we know is falling

Also Fireflight, The Agonist, Wir Sind Helden and Evanescence are all fronted by women

Some non-metal ones I would recommend:

Heavenly, the Pipettes, Camera Obscura, The Slits, PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, Feist, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I think the Slits are the only all female band. I think PJ Harvey records all the instruments herself but has a backup band when playing live. Pipettes have 3 female frontwomen but all male backing.

I listened to a bunch of songs from the bands people were recommending. I went on a camping trip for my bio class the day after I made this thread and had a bunch of these songs stuck in my head the entire trip.

Lights is a great vocalist, I suggest looking her up.

Nightwish is fronted by a female singer for the most part, although some songs are sung by Marco.

Haven't listened to them myself yet, though I'm planning to, but I heard that Warpaint are a pretty good group :). All female, by the way.

I kinda like Siouxsie and the Banshees, though no one else I know seems to; they're about equal parts pop and rock, though.

Also, for older bands, check out Heart and Stevie Nicks. If I'm not mistaken, both are primarily female bands, or at least equal parts female and male, and they both totally rule!

Oh, and even though it's already been said, Lacuna Coil is freaking awesome! Although, I think the singer is the only female of the band.

Daisy Chainsaw, The Distillers, Horrorpops, Lacuna Coil, The Soviettes, Bikini Kill, The Epoxies, Queen Adreena, Hole, Garbage, L7, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vice Squad, No Doubt, Save Ferris.

There's a few good ones to check out, most aren't metal, and most are only lead by women but still pretty awesome.

Edit: Holy shit, I forgot Heart, Dresden Dolls and Rasputina! =P
And yes, I didn't put in Paramore due to the fact they were mentioned a lot already.

Lights of Autumn, Paramore, Evanesence, Halestorm, Heart, Pat Banatar, Kitty, Otep, Antigone Rising, Avril Lavigne, Lacuna Coil, Shiny Toy Guns, Morningwood. That might be enough to hold anyone over. Out of those, I think only Heart and Antigone Rising are all girl bands. Also, Mindless Self Indulgence has a male singer but a female drummer and guitarist. They're pretty good.

Stiletto and The Devotchkas are both good and all female, but good luck finding stuff for Stiletto.

As for female vocalists, Whorehouse of Representatives, Zero Hour and Submission Hold are quite good. The first 2 might not fit well with some people.

I really like King Ly Chee. They're a Hong Kong hardcore band with a female lead singer. I saw them open for NOFX in Beijing. I haven't been able to find a lot of their stuff through normal means, but they were great live. Also, close the opposite of that, I liked Tsunami Bomb when they were around. A little too poppy for my current tastes, but Agent M is a great vocalist.
