You need X - the one of the very best punk bands America's produced - fronted by the killer Exene Cervenka. I'd also say Sonic Youth because Kim Gordon sang on a lot of their songs and 'cause they're generally great. You also need Young Marble Giants (one of Kurt Cobain's favourite bands incidentally) and X-Ray Spex. And Teenage Jesus and the Jerks if you're into noise rock.
Edit: And THE SLITS! How did I forget the Slits? Find their punky dub/reggae cover "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" and continue from there. I guarantee you you'll like it - or at least use it as a talking point later on.

Once again, everyone would benefit from letting Rolo Tomassi into their lives. Fronted by the gorgeous Eva Spence (who makes bloody terrifying sounds considering her frame) they are putting many other bands to shame with their sheer technical ability.
