Hello there,

in this thread we talk about 10 best FPS Single player campaign of all time? I'll start one game per franchise

10. Soldier of fortune 2 double helix

Excellent Gunplay, was very gory and violent.. game was incredible which is now sadly forgotten very fast. it was old school fast paced shooter where story was kinda like Deus Ex like based on conspiracy all over the world so if Deus Ex was pure FPS it would be soldier of fortune. John mullins is one badass and excellent Character too.

9. Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay

The best Movie licensce game ever or I would say only good one? the was the game combine FPS and stealth genre into one. has Excellent atmosphere and rival Half life 2 back in 2004 too.

8. FEAR

Very first FEAR was unique FPS for its time and its gunplay is still unmatched and AI was excellent too. like when you open flashlight enemies yell :flashlight" and the slo mo feature was fantastic too make game more immersive and engaging. its level design is repetetive office door make this game low in my top 10 FPS list.

7. Return to Castle Wolfenstein

This was only only really great wolfenstien game since wolf 3d because 2009 one and new order are very mediocre. game has excellent variety, enemies from nazis, zombies to other creatures, to old school fast paced gameplay and one of the GOAT soundtracks.

6. Crysis

When it was released many people only talk about graphics and benchmarking. it was very very demanding game at that time. but it was also very unique game too. with involving suit powers in semi open world sandbox enviroment. I even enjoy the second half that many people find boring. it was truly amazing game which franchise legacy ruined by dumbed down sequels

5. System shock 2

System shock 2 was very inspirational game. I did played it for the first time after i played bioshock infinite which i found real bad and i saw many people talk about bioshock series is spritual successor of system shock thus I finally got this from GOG and played it and Holy crap! it blew me away. it was very deep and complex game. and to this date games copy it today like dead space did, like new prey will do. it was core concept of FPS/RPG hybrid which inspired Deus Ex and make it even more excellent. bring on remake and system shock 3.

4. Doom

Doom 2016. only Modern FPS that is even in my top 5 let alone top 10 FPS of all time. and this prove developers can still make these type of games other than COD clones. and ID software did fantastic job. after Doom 3 which was excellent too was not really praised as Doom game but this game took the formula of classic doom and turn into modern and it works. level design are also excellent unlike modern FPS and not just go straight forward and cutscene after cutscene.

3. Stalker Shadow of chernoboyl

This was the most unique and innovative FPS of all time and still to this day after almost 10 years no other games feel that immersed in the world of zone. most immersive and atmospheric game of all time. 2007 was the time when FPS start feel stale with the released of COD4 and Halo 3. this game however was very unique.

2. Deus Ex

Like System shock 2 this game perfected FPS/RPG hybrid and bring it to new level. games like Deus Ex are the reason why even mass effect exist today. i played it for the first time before the anticipation of Deus Ex HR. and it ended one of my Fav game of all time. best story in FPS game, the perfect level design, this game sum up everything about gaming. the only reason why its not number 1 because this is the list of top 10 FPS not top 10 games and this game is no pure FPS game. its FPS, RPG and stealth genre into one.

1. Half life 2

Half life 2 was the game that change the landscape of FPS genre like first Half life raise the bar. Pacing of game is Excellent, the variety (from ravenholm to citadel), the level design, the gravity gun. Half life series is basically pioneer of storytelling in FPS genre and it tell incredible story without having a one single cutscene. many games still try to copy half life. shame we will never see another half life game in future again.

So what are top 10 best campaign of FPS you have ever played?

I'm not going to consider first-person stealth games (e.g. Thief, Dishonored), first-person puzzle games (e.g. Portal), or games I would say fall more into RPG territory (e.g. Fallout, Vampire: The Masquerade).

That said, in no particular order:

BioShock - Well, this is my favorite FPS game of all time. In fact, it is the only one I'd say ranks in my Top 5 games of all time. Rapture is perhaps the best setting in any game, and its inhabitants were truly fantastic...in a twisted way of course. Maybe not the best shooting mechanics, but the gameplay was serviceable enough to not hinder the excellent story and atmosphere.

BioShock 2 - Least favorite of the BioShock games, but I'd still say it is better than most FPS games. Despite being repetitive and copy/pasting too much from BioShock in terms of presentation, it was at least a fun shooter that did a decent job expanding Rapture.

BioShock: Infinite - To me, it is the most fun of the BioShock games. While it is more simple, the skyline battles were a blast. Columbia is also an excellent setting very much up there with Rapture as being among the best. It also did a decent job expanding the commentary of the first BioShock, something I felt BioShock 2 thoroughly missed.

FEAR - Easily one of the scariest games I've played, and I still have yet to see better enemy AI. It also did a great job switching between visceral action segments and terrifying horror segments.

FEAR 2: Project Origin - I wouldn't consider this game scary at all. Yes, there's a sense of unease throughout much of it, but it all feels like they tried too hard to make Alma more aggressive than in the first game. Still, it is a lot of fun, and for an action game set in a horror setting, it does an excellent job building its setting and letting you murder stuff throughout it.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - Easily the best WWII shooter I played. It kept things varied and did a great job translating popular WWII movies into video game format. I still occasionally go back to play it.

Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault - Not as fun as Allied Assault, but it's managed to remain memorable for creating a more human-centered WWII game. Considering most WWII games focused on just letting us have fun with historic battles, this one actually did back up a little bit and decide to focus on some of the people caught up in the war, and it did an excellent job in my opinion.

Call of Duty - Second only to Allied Assault, which basically was its spiritual predecessor. I lost count of how many times I beat this game's campaign. While it wasn't as varied, it still did a great job creating many high-action levels and set pieces without getting tiring like more recent games.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - While I do tend to love this game most for its multiplayer, I put in many hours on the campaign. It still has a ton of memorable moments like the nuke scene, the sniper levels, and the ending. This is probably one of the few games where I felt it excelled at both singleplayer and multiplayer.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl - To be honest, I never did complete this game. A glitch made sure of that after I was like 30-40 hours in. I haven't bothered to try again. Still, it's one of the more memorable FPS games I've played and did one of the best jobs I've seen of creating a world for you to inhabit that felt like it existed beyond yourself.

Stealth only if you choose it to be stealth. Dues Ex has a stealth option too.
Deus Ex has many weapons and you can shoot. dishonored barely allow you to shoot. just only crosbow and one gun which barely usable.

Not really sure how Soldier of Fortune 2 made it onto a 'best campaign' list.

Don't get me wrong, its super fun, no contest there. But a good campaign? That thing was a completely insignificant backdrop to the silliness which was the gunplay. It may as well have been like terrorist hunt from the rainbow games.

I mean if you're measuring its greatness by the core gunplay mechanics alone, the campaign is insignificant no? Gunplay happens everywhere.

Plus if memory serves me right, it was super linear, which is supposedly a big no-no, so I've heard once or twice.

Oh yeah!

Any 'Best FPS campaign' list that doesn't have AVP2 on it is just a lie. 3 excellent campaigns for the price of 1!

Though I'd question if its possible to actually get through Dishonored with shooting. I haven't tried, but it seems like you'd run out of the gun/crossbow ammo.

Granted, the topic didn't define at what point they consider the FPS edge to be in hybrid games. On a hypothetical basis, you could throw in Skyrim (which is completable using only shooting combat via bows or spells).

Anyways
Not that I play enough FPSes in general to necessarily be a good sample, but a top ten in no particular order.

Alien vs Predator
Call of Juarez : Gunslinger
Dark Messiah of Might & Magic
Doom 2
Fallout : New Vegas
Far Cry : Blood Dragon (Beating out 3/4 because the condensed experience avoids the fatigue they tend to get)
Jedi Knight : Dark Forces (I think I got the title wrong, that series is confusing as crap. But the one that was an FPS before it switched fully into a third person lightsaber thing with an FPS option no one ever uses)
Heavy Gear 2 (I'm told its not very good, but personal nostalgia goggles maybe)
Hexen
Perfect Dark

Honorable Mentions
Bulletstorm, Command & Conquer : Renegade (Almost on the list. I do remember enjoying the campaign, but being more about the uniquish multiplayer), Unreal

FPS/RPG hybrid is one of the most important sub genre of FPS. why did you leave out my friend?

this genre was quite dead but now resergence again with Deus Ex MD, System shock, Prey and possible cyberpunk 2077 coming out.

this whole argument is invalid because the greatest FPS campaign was Duke Nukem Forever. No I am not being trollish, that game had a great campaign when you stack it against the competitors of the year. Everybody shitts on DNF because it didn't live up to the hype or even the Duke brand, but take it on it's own, and the game was really really fun. That's all I can ask for in a game. Was it fun? Hell yes!

I still see it as an FPSoother just like Dark Messiah (which I completely forgot about and I freaking love that game) and Hexen/Heretic or Blood. There's just more to it than shooting.

I'm going to add in hybrids, because even then I'm not sure I can come up with 10 FPS campaigns I really like.
Alright, so in no order:

The Darkness (and its sequel)
Escape from Butcher Bay
Half-Life 2
Bioshock
Stalker
Fear
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
And the Portal games, even if they don't really count.
