Modern Warfare 1 - Very cool for it's time. Can't remember other military themed FPS games that weren't about WW2 so this was a breath of fresh air. Really intense campaign that changed formula with almost every mission(the AC-130 mission in particular made me realize how scary and detached real modern warfare has become). This game was a trendsetter in almost every way. Less cool they are still milking it almost a decade later.

Metro 2033 Redux/Last Light - Really atmospheric and claustrophobic experience. In a similair set-up like Fallout the bombs dropped during WW2 but instead of vaults the people here escaped into the Russion metro tunnels where remnants of the old order(Nazis and commies) continue to fight their war. When you go outside things become espescially gruesome as you nervously travel the (gorgeously depicted)wasteland while constantly running low on air filters. Much respect to the developers for making such awesome games on a shoestring budget under very difficult circumstances.

FEAR 2 - Still my most favorite FPS of all time. Really like the original FEAR but this game had more variety. No other game has shoot-outs as cool as FEAR. Weapons that feel weighty and impactful thanks to particle effects and environmental damage, kick-ass atmosphere and smart enemy AI. The mech sections were cool as well.

I love Bioshock & Infinite, Half Life 2 and the episodes, Half Life 1 (even though it outstays its welcome), Doom 2016, and Portal if you count those. So, in conclusion, nothin' out of the ordinary.

Hmm, let's see... I'll pick off 10 names I've quite enjoyed, but this isn't what my full list would look like.

1. Unreal Gold
2. Quake
3. Deus Ex
4. STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
5. Blood
6. SWAT 4
7. SiN
8. No One Lives Forever
9. Clive Barker's Undying
10. System Shock

Also, I'll mention Daikatana, because even though it has a ton of problems, I had a lot of fun with it (post fan-patch, anyway)

How peculiar that somebody going by "DOOM GUY" wouldn't place a single Doom game on his Top 10 FPS list.

Fair enough.

Not a big fan of FPS games, but I get back into them every now and again because some the more popular games have amazing level design. I'm only throwing out 5 since I haven't played enough of them to be sure of 10.

5. Perfect Dark (with expansion)
4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (short but interesting)
3. Metroid Prime (doesn't beat SM though)
2. Half-Life 2 (I can't lie)
1. Half-Life (original)

Hmmmm, in no particular order:

-DOOM (new one)
-Half-life/Half Life 2 (I couldn't pick one)
-Bioshock
-Resistance 3
-Blood
-FEAR and FEAR 2 (tie). FEAR was scarier and got the atmosphere better, but I thought 2 was a better overall action game.
-Far Cry 3
-Crysis
-Resistance 3
-Painkiller

Honorable mentions: Quake 4 and Wolfenstein: TNO.

Excluding games that have shooting but not a focus on shooting combat like "Portal" or "ZombiU".

10) Metro 2033
9) Resistance 3
8) Call of Duty: Black Ops II
7) Wolfenstein: The New Order
6) Left 4 Dead 2
5) Halo 3: ODST
4) BioShock
3) Call of Duty: World at War
2) Halo 2
1) Far Cry - which is also my favourite game across all genres.

Honourable mention to "Star Wars Battlefront II" which is technically an FPS, but I rarely ever play it in first person, favouring the TPS option it gives you.

I'm just going to list my top 10 FPS games, since all of them have a campaign, and them having a campaign at least factored in at least partially dictated where they ended up:

10) Medal of Honour: Frontline
9) Halo 2
8) Halo 5: Guardians
7) Doom
6) Doom 3
5) GoldenEye
4) Killzone 2
3) Halo 3
2) Halo: Reach
1) Halo: Combat Evolved

I was thinking about putting Doom on my list, but I wanted to save the spot for something else instead, as the name makes it pretty obvious that I like Doom.

Was really unimpressed with NuDoom though, in some ways I rate it lower than Doom 3. Not to say that's it's bad, I didn't even think Doom 3 was bad, but it's not on the same level as the original games.

I only didn't mention it because... well, come on. It's not fair. It's like bringing a Picasso into an art fight, hosted by DeviantArt.

And now it's time to quote stuff:

B-Cell said:
if Deus Ex was pure FPS it would be soldier of fortune.
Actually, I'd say it would be Perfect Dark. As in:

-Both are released in 2000.

-Both are set in the future, and owe their existence to the cyberpunk genre (more so Deus Ex, but PD still has elements of "high technology, low living")

-Both of their storylines are based heavily on conspiracy theories, running with them with absolute sincereity.

-Both of them have a sequel/prequel that is considered the low point of their respective series

-Both of them had numerous abortive attempts at a third installment (though Deus Ex finally got Human Revolution)

-Key difference being that Deus Ex is an FPS/RPG hybrid, whereas Perfect Dark is a "pure" FPS with multiplayer to boot.

9. Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay

The best Movie licensce game ever or I would say only good one?
-Aladdin (Genesis version)
-James Cameron's Avatar
-GoldenEye (N64 version)
-The World is Not Enough
-Jurassic Park (Genesis version)
-The Lion King
-The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (console version)
-The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (console version)
-The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age (console version)
-The Lord of the Rings: Battles for Middle-earth
-Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
-Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
-Super Star Wars
-Toy Story (console version)
-Aliens: Colonial Marines (bite me)

There's numerous other examples, but those are just the ones in the scope of personal experience. There's plenty of decent movie-licensed games, even if a lot of games based on movies are lacklustre.

5. System shock 2

and to this date games copy it today like dead space did,
How?

B-Cell said:
2007 was the time when FPS start feel stale with the released of COD4 and Halo 3. this game however was very unique.
Wait, what?

Let's be generous and assume that Halo 3 is an example of the genre/franchise going stale (disagree, but whatever). Whatever one may think of CoD today, Modern Warfare was considered groundbreaking at the time, not to mention that BioShock got released in the same year as well. Know you don't like those games, but considering the trends/series CoD 4 and BioShock would begin in 2007 rather than continue pre-'07, I don't think they can be held up as examples of stagnation.

I don't think the Prime games are really "FPS" in the traditional sense. True, you have a gun and shoot it from the first-person perspective, but that's not what you're there for, so to speak. I'd classify them as first-person adventure more than anything else.

Even if you had a gun shooting those little monsters, it would still be a rail shooter. Literally - Todd's vehicle is on actual rails half the time. 0_0

Anyway, I enjoyed Snap way back in the day, but boy did it get old fast. Didn't help that I was never able to complete the snap-book, that there was one pokemon I could never find. :(

Hrm... No particular order.

Halo CE. Introduced me to FPS, honestly, and brought a good FPS control scheme to consoles. Had interesting AI, varied enemies and fun things that made it stand out. Not to put multiple games of a same franchise, I'd say Halo Reach is the best... but it has some scale and humor issues that make me hesitant to just throw it up there. Halo one did enough to get some special recognition.

Bioshock. A deeply atmospheric and narrative game with a interesting world and very interesting gameplay. It is greatly appreciated.

Call of Duty 4. It's a good game, yes. Nothing like super awesome, but still very awesome. It holds up for just being really fun and having somewhat varied levels where you kind of were working around something different then just kill bad guys all of the time. (Escort a tank, sniper mission, car chase, etc.)

Deus Ex Human Revolution. I like punching things as a cyborg who didn't ask for this.

Alien Vs Predator 2010: Only one I got to play, and in that case I got to be a human, alien and predator each with their different flavors of murder. Of course, Alien has never had a good plot, so the story is nothing to write home about, but it was dumb and fun which at times is all I could ask for.

F.E.A.R. 2: While the first had some of the most awesome and over the top FPS combat i've played, the second takes ahead with more interesting environments, and a better supporting cast.

Metroid Prime: This was awesome. Only one I ever owned and played.

Fallout 3: I had more fun with this then New Vegas or 4, honestly.

This is about all I can think of as far as it came to a actual good campaign. That i've played at least.

It has that weird little mode where you face bots and learn things on your own - one of the best damn campaigns I ever played, I'm telling ya.

Going purely off the best Single Player Campaigns:

1. Medal of Honor Frontline
2. Halo Combat Evolved
3. Star Wars Republic Commando
4. Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2 (It has aged terribly, but when it came out- damn what a game!)
5. Brothers in Arms Road to Hill 30
6. DOOM
7. Sniper Elite V2
8. Medal of Honor Allied Assault (scores poorly because of its rushed ending)
9. Halo 2 (same as Above)
10. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare

I don't see why Metroid Prime wouldn't count. Hell i believe i should count more that some of the games listed here. Its not a rpg hybrid, it doesnt have multiplayer, you spend most of your time shooting things, there are little to no NPCs or quests, there's no magic. Sure it's sci fi and has color but that's not a reason to exclude them
