What Hawki means, is that aside from the big three: Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon. Sometimes you get Animal Crossing or Fire Emblem. Nintendo rarely or don't bother with their other older IPs that helped made them a household name. A majority of those games, Hawki listed haven't gotten another game in years or decades. Tropical Freeze came out in 2014. Metroid Prime 4 still has no release date (as far as I know). The last Advance Wars games were on the DS. Kid Icarus 3DS had a crappy control scheme and sucked even more for left handed players. The last F-Zero was on the fucking Gamecube! The closest we got to an F-Zero game are Fast RMX (which was on the Wii U first) and Redout (which owes more to Wipeout). Which is ironic, because Redout is out on all consoles now. Before the Switch, it was just on XONE & PS4. Splatoon and Arms are there only new IPs, despite those games being well made. I have more interests in Arms than Splatoon though. That is what Hawk and most other of similar mean.

If I have complained, those stances aren't inherently contradictory.

If a company releases a glut of titles in Franchise A, and a dearth of titles in Franchise B, and I request more titles in Franchise B, is that really the same as asking for "rehashes?"

And look, just as the company is entitled to explain why that's the case, I and everyone else am entitled to ***** about it.

I think Fire Emblem belongs in that trilogy now, for better or worse. I'm wary of commenting too much on Fire Emblem, as I haven't actually played an installment since Shadow Dragon, but it's clear to me that Awakening changed the franchise. Changed it in a way that boosted its popularity, but...well, I'll put it this way. but Nintendo does release games from franchise's in their past that don't often get release's.

Kid icarus like you mentioned, is just one of them. whether or not Kid Icarus's control scheme sucked or not is a pretty subjective thing that's up for debate because i know a bunch of people that love the controls while others like yourself hated them. i thought it's controls were ok, not amazing, but i could see what they were going for. the controls worked, but took a lot of effort to get used to them.


any as for releasing sequels to old rarely used franchise's there's a bunch i can list. Metroid is the most obvious one. that series used to be a common Franchise that Nintendo would regularly release but fans became starved of the series as after Prime 3: Corruption in 2008, the next game released was other M in 2010 and people hated Other M so people kept yelling for a new good entry in the series and we didn't hear anything until Metroid Prime Federation force in 2015, and because that game was a spin off and not what people were hoping for, people became angry at Nintendo and didn't stop yelling at Nintendo to release a new proper Metroid Metroid game until 2017 when Samus Returns was revealed and released and Metroid Prime 4 was confirmed to officially be in development.

then you've got the Pikmin series, Pikmin 1 and 2 released between a couple of years of each other on the Gamecube then the Pikmin series skipped the entire Wii generation and Pikmin 3 didn't release until miway through 2013 on the Wii U. the only other Pikmin we've seen since then was a little spin off call Hey Pikmin! in 2017 on the 3DS which fans thought was just ok and then back to waiting for Pikmin 4.

the change seemed to resonate with people and lots of people ended up buying Fire Emblem Awakening which was actually going to be very last entry in the Fire Emblem series unless it sold well and then Awakening surprised everyone and sold EXTREMELY well and that''s why we see so much more Fire Emblem games today and so many blue haired anime sword fighters in Smash Bros.

I didn't put Metroid in the neglected franchises list. It's had a rocky release history, but Samus Returns wasn't too long ago, and Prime 4 is (supposedly) coming. I get the sense that Nintendo has a lot of respect for the franchise, but it's stymied by limited financial success, plus this is a case where this is a Japanese game that's enjoyed by Western audiences a lot more.

I also didn't list Star Fox due to the relatively recent release of Zero (and I guess you could argue Star Fox 2), but as far as I'm concerned, Star Fox is effectively dead. The series has never recaptured the success of Star Fox 64, and in part, it's because it seems to have constantly alternated between styles. Y'know, kind of like Sonic has never stayed consistent, except for whatever reason, Fox has never got the hedgehog's success.

Not sure. Metroid, maybe, but from what I understand, Star Fox has generally struggled financially. Star Fox 64? Sure. Every game since that? Not so much.

Yes, it's a change. It's a change I'm iffy about because from what I've read, because you can now steamroll through levels in the knowledge that your party members won't stay dead, the map design reportedly suffered. But what bugs me more is that from what I've seen, Fire Emblem's gone from a series primarily known for being a SRPG to a waifu simulator. And...ugh.

Kid Icarus was in 2012 with no other new game or re-release on the Wii U or Switch for a much better control scheme. Pikmin is more recent, so I did not bother mentioning it. Still does not change the fact that many of their franchises outside the big three (4?) are dormant not doing much. The Star Fox series dropped in quality, and SFX0 was just a lazy remake of the original game, again. But with forced, shitty motion controls no one asked for. If they ever consider making the motion controls optional for Switch, I'll consider picking it up at a heavily discounted price. Don't bother with a long winded defense of SFX0 controls, you've done before and it's boring. Bayonetta 2's jet fighter section was a better Star Fox game than Zero. And that section was more of a homage to After Burner, than Star Fox. Then again, as much as I liked Star Fox games (that are rail shooters), The Panzer Dragoon games, After Burner, and the Sin & Punishment Duology are rail shooters are a much higher caliber and more fun.

Yeah, it ended on a cliffhanger, after the second game ended on a cliffhanger, which, spoilers, 80%ish of which wasn't resolved in Dark Dawn whilst Dark Dawn just piled on more stuff which wasn't resolved.

I'm also willing to argue that it was not good at the end of the day. The most charitable I'm willing to go is "okay".

I disagree that the second game ended on a cliffhanger. Most of the game's plot was resolved. It certainly hinted at where things could go, such as Alex or Anemos, but neither of those plot points were dangled in a way that said "to be continued."

That said, I do agree that Dark Dawn's flaw (among others) is that it goes and explores new plots rather than dealing with either of the above. Anemos is ignored, and Alex continues to be dangled in front of the player.

You're missing a big plot thread about the Wise One imbuing Isaac with a portion of the Mars Star's energy, which made him a partial recipient of the Golden Sun. Which is something Alex was told about. Does Alex try to steal that portion from Isaac to complete his godhood? What did the Wise One foresee Isaac's destiny to be beyond the events of the first two games that he would need that power? What effect has it had on him to date (the slowed aging isn't it, that affected everyone in the presence of the Mars Lighthouse)?

None of that followed up on.

I also count seeing what the old characters are up to now as dangling threads. Isaac, Garret, and Piers are pretty well established, while Jenna, Ivan, and Mia only get small mentions, but Sheba isn't really established and Felix has "mysteriously vanished". I also don't hold much faith the old cast would get much of a follow-up in another sequel, given that Dark Dawn alone added 8 whole party members in a single game which would at least share top billing if not steal it.

I don't see that as a dangling plot thread in of itself.

Slowed ageing? I don't remember that being stated in Dark Dawn.

So, while I can criticize Dark Dawn for not following up on the plot threads of Lost Age, and instead introducing new plot threads that are still left dangling by the game's end, I'm actually okay with the lack of the former cast returning. I mean, you could work the plot around them, but you run the risk of overshadowing the new cast, and there's the question of how much of it would just be fan service. And in case you're wondering, I liken fan service to iceing. Ice the cake, don't make it a substitute for the cake.

Also, to clarify something else, if you're criticizing Dark Dawn for not following up on the plot threads Lost Age left, then yes, I agree. However, I never felt that any of the plot threads were what you'd call sequel bait or cliffhangers.
