What Games Should Stop Being Made?

Ha Dead (end). I don't see it continuing after 2 anyway, what made you think it should stop?
Of course I can assume it's because 1 & 2 were basically the same game, like just about every game on your list, (with which I completely agree with). Maybe not elder scrolls & 'Fantasy' RPG's since Skyrim & Fallout 3 are the only ones I have played.

None. If they can afford to keep making games for a series then there is obviously a good number of people that enjoy playing them. Why deprive them of what they enjoy when I can just choose not to play the games? No skin off my back if people want to play Halo 7, but Reach was the end of the series for me.

Yeah, good point. Really there are very few games I'd really like to see them stop making pretty much because I can just choose to not buy the ones I don't like; the exceptions being the Call of Duty type military gun wank games and only because elements of them seem to be leeching into games I do enjoy.
Also MMOs. ...for the same reason come to think of it. I'm looking at you Blizzard.
Really though, now that I've sampled a few MMOs thanks to the lovely F2P model, my biggest beef with them is mostly that when I play I feel like my actions are largely insignificant. You see one of the things I enjoy about video games is being a hero. I like thinking that I'm actually making a difference in that tiny virtual world, and in modern games seeing the fuits of my labours manifested in that virtual world.. However in an MMO, no matter how many quests/missions I complete the world remains unchanged and there's always the undermining knowledge that these same quests/missions have already been completed by about 10,000 players before me and will be completed again by another 10,000+ after me. The NPCs never remember my successes and nothing ever changes no matter what I do. Of course I'm well aware of why it is that way, but that doesn't make it any more bearable.

Seriously, I don't understand why you would want any game series to stop being made. Here's a tip: If you don't like a game (or series), you don't have to buy it.

Every game series has it's fans, why would you want to rob them of it?

Gun to my head, I HAVE to choose something, I'd go with shovel-ware (or pick a shovel-ware game/series). Broken games that only exist to confuse Grandma at Christmas time.

I love the Mass Effect series, but I'm going to be pissed if its not over with the third game. One thing the entertainment industry needs to learn is to write proper endings.

A REAL ending to a story should be like a climax in sex. The culmination of all the tension in the story exploding in a blast of awesomeness.

But its true. Sex is better because it ends. So are games/stories.


Edit: I have to moderate myself by saying that a series is not necessarily bad. I'm thrilled Witcher 2 was made, but only because I get more adventure in a world I love. Not because the story continues. I want a NEW story. If the characters from the first ones arent dead, feel free to use them, but for the love of god. Write the story, and be done with it.

They said ME3 is going to be the end of Shepard's story, but they're going to continue the series with spinoff games.

It'd be nice if Valve stopped spewing out HL and HL2 mods and calling them new games.

If Portal, Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2 are HL2 mods, then Red Dead Redemption is a GTA4 mod, Fallout 3 is a Oblivion mod, Planescape Torment is a Baldurs Gate mod and a number of other examples. All of these have the same things in common: created by the same developer using the same game engine (and in all but one case, their own engine) in broadly the same genre.

Allow different developers and a lot of games could be considered mods of one of the Unreal titles, including Bioshock, Bulletstorm, Rainbow Six Vegas, Brother In Arms: Hell's Highway, America's Army, perhaps at a stretch even Borderlands and Mass Effect.

While I can sort of see your point, it's a bit unfair to downplay all of Valve's games as mods, since many other devs can be blamed of doing the same thing. The only difference is the frequency at which they do it. I'll admit Valve has a quite a record there.

When a game series needs to end.

Any game series where you run the same boring bull shit as the previous game(s)
Example Call of Duty, Battlefield and other series that are clones of it

Series with sucky game play, story or shit/non-existant endings
Ending like the Sopranos ended would work if done right, given the right context, but not as a cop-out.

When you make New versions of the same game over and over
How many new versions of the exact same game we need? When you re release the exact same game with a different sub title more than 2 times its time to give it up and move on.
When you have already the Original Game, Gold Edition, Game of the Year Edition and Best seller edition your beating a dead horse.

Example how many versions of Street Fighter exist?
Street Fighter II the World Warriors, Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter II Champion Edition, Super Street Fighter II, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter II Turbo: Grand Master for Matching Service, Street Fighter II 3D, Street Fighter: the Movie: The Game, Street Fighter II Anniversary Edition, Street Fighter II HD Re-mix.

That is 10 versions of the exact same game

I'm not going to read all 5 pages, and yet I'm shocked an appalled that no one mentioned Sonic on the first page. I can't think of another series where a game comes out and no one cares, so they then release another pile of shit so that no one can care for that.

Instead I see a few votes to axe Mario? WTF? Sure, I agree that whoever is designing the Mario games lately has no clue how to make something that holds a candle to Super Mario World or SMB3, but that doesn't mean the series is dead. The games are still somewhat functional, and are aimed quite well at their target audience.

I would actually agree with this to a point. I love many of Nintendo's franchise's, (the exceptions that come immediately to mind are Pikmin and Star Fox, but to each their own) however I do feel that a number of them have been reached the point where adding on to it only does more harm than good. The Legend of Zelda is one such franchise. I love that series, I've loved it ever since I first got a look at the first game waaaaaay back when I was like 8 years old and didn't really understand what the game was about, but loved it anyway. I can't really comment on Skyward Sword as I currently can't get past the first Dungeon (stupid Ghid... what ever his name is), however ever since I first saw the promos for Spirit Tracks (which I still haven't played) I've begun to wonder if this series' best years are behind it. Another Nintendo franchise that comes to mind is Metroid, although personally I think Metroid should have ended after Super Metroid, but that's just me, possibly allowing for Metroid Prime, but otherwise, no.
I also feel the same way about many non-game franchises that I've enjoyed. Star Trek for one. I know how much of a shame it'd be to have it end after so many years, but after the end of Enterprise I found myself wondering where they could take the franchise from there. Much to my dismay I found out, didn't I?

I was satisfied with the end of the Guitar Hero series. As it was tossed to Activision, they ruined rhythm gaming's reputation built by Harmonix and Konami. I still really enjoy the Rock Band series, as each game kind of brought something (with the exception of Lego and Green Day) and I would enjoy the prosperity of Harmonix and Rock Band.

Indeed. Next Generation was really where "real" Star Trek ended for me. They tend to ruin movies this way too.
