Okay, so we all know that pokemon is an RPG. But what genre is the story? Is it sci-fi, or maybe fantasy? I never really thought about it before, but now I can't stop wondering about it.

RPG, JRPG if you want. One with a ton of choices too, since that is what people keep whining about wanting in RPGs.

The story falls there too but honestly, who cares for the story in Pokemon?

Technology only really seems to be altered to fit the story so I'd consider it Fantasy. Also, welcome to the Escapist!

Pokemon is, gameplay wise, a twist on the first few Final Fantasy games. There are many gameplay changes of course, but at it's core that's what it is.

As for the genre, I would say it's a fantasy JRPG, but there wasn't really anything like it when it came out.

jrpg.
it features an underage protagonist with (usually) stupid hair that goes off on a great adventure for power and glory and to save the world.

I'm gonna say that it's not an RPG but an action-adventure game.

You're a young man who leaves home with nothing but a trusty companion that breathes fire, a Potion from your computer, and an urge to kill bugs and birds on the outskirts of some city you've never been to.

Er... most of, if not all, the protagonists wear hats of some sort, so there's no stupid hair at all.
OT: I'd say something between Fantasy and Science Fiction, since it seems to swing between the two somewhat.

I would say it depends on which version of the game you intend on dissecting. Pokémon Blue, for instance, has a story strongly influenced by classic Greek tragedies, while the story of Pokémon Yellow is more of an avant-garde romantic comedy. Pokémon Gold's story is more or less a bastardized adaptation of Roald Dahl's seminal novel "Matilda". I'd say that the overarching theme of the franchise is one of moral redemption in a society where cruelty has become the norm.

It's a turn-based Japanese RPG with strong strategic overtones.

edit: I didn't realize how old this thread was...

I'd err on the side of fantasy JRPG over Sci-fi JRPG. Mainly as the pokeballs, healing centres e.t.c to all purposes run on magic.

Except that in Kanto, they have a power plant. And three years later,in silver and gold, It's up and running, supplying power to all of Kanto, and the magnet train.

Tvtropes calls it a Raising sim. There's also computers in it, besides other things. The creator based it on his experiences of beetle fighting.
