so what if Voice recognition technology became so advanced that you could talk to game charachters through a microphone?

now I know this Idea probably isnt that new and it kind of has been done before (the game "seaman")

on one hand[/B] I supose it would take role playing to the next level, how ever to be effective I think it would have to be advanced enough to detect sarcasm and tone of voice aside form just words

I mean sure you could go around screaming "fuck you!" to every NPC you see but like any game that wouldnt work well for you, also I guess if youre in a fantasy RPG it would kind of act like a translator, for example charahcters themselfs may not use the term "fuck you" but they understand and react as if its a huge insult

as for romance options......well that would be interesting

on the other hand [/B]

NPC's reactions are still limited, so realy its still not that different to dialogue options other than an added gimmick, and just that it could just be an annoying gimmick

also that might mess with the idea of the PC really being part of the game world, I supose different games have different focus for example Fallout could probably work with this systm, Mass effect how ever wouldnt because shepard is a more pre defined charachter

While it's good in theory, there would be a very, VERY heavy emphasis on triggers, which would kill the whole "say whatever you want" idea. Either that or it would be limited to tone, angry/happy voice, etc.

In all, good idea, hard to execute.

I can see this working sometime in the future, but you would need a sophisticated voice recognition software possibly combined with one of those conversation bots which can replicate human conversation.

Assuming that they created an AI that could detect ALL forms of speech, impediments, sarcasm, lisps and process it fully without problem I would buy that game, their is no price limit. I mean that would create a world were there is no limit to possibilities. But on the off hand its just creating another form of reality and it would become the equivalent to crack on an RPG.

"STOP RUNNING INTO THE WALL."
"What do you even need 10 zombie hearts for?"
"Don't start a battle with me, I have a level 67 Charizard!"

The whole "yelling at games" thing people do would actually be good for something other than simply venting frustration. It wouldn't be long before you could conceivably run through a level of Mario, for example, doing nothing but saying "Jump, jump, jump, fireball, fireball, jump".

It kinda reminds me of old adventure games where you typed out EVERY SINGLE THING YOU EVER WANTED TO DO AND MORE and the computer would tell you "I don't understand 'thwack a priest in the nads.'" I get the feeling it would end up being the same thing, where you'd have to work within the confines of the developers limited dialogue tricycle.

That said, it would make for some really great Let's Plays.

They would probably all go into a corner and wonder what purpose they have with all the berating I would do to them.

I an see it now;

"What was that?"

"Speak plain language"

"I don't understand what you're saying."

"come again?"

"What was that?"

etc.

Good in theory, but only really possible in games where dialogue is already unimportant.

EndWar tried something like this, but I never played it.

Off-topic: We need a completely new system of dialogue to replace trees/wheels/etc. None of the most popular systems actually work, since they require you to stop whatever you're doing to talk. It would have to be on top of the control scheme that is already present. Maybe if they added more buttons to controllers..

..but that wouldn't work either, since you'd need a list of responses. This also doesn't make sense in a game, you wouldn't usually have to read through your own thoughts to come up with an answer.

Argh, I can't figure this out. It's much too late.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory co-op had that. If you were playing over Live with headsets NPCs could hear what you would say and try to find you if you talked.

You've clearly never yelled at talked to Seaman.

How can you not love a game about condescending man-fish that sound like George Takei?

If they could properly respond to what I'm saying it would be awesome, sadly we're a long way from that. If it worked though, I would probably yell at my allies to actually help me in a fight, and I would scream profanities at my enemies. More than I already do I mean.

Yeah but that was not so much recognizing speech as it was recognizing there was noise, it knew you made a noise but it had no idea whether it was you yelling profanities at the mercenaries or if it was a door slamming.

OP: I am not sure I would like to go through that. First of all, it would be nearly impossible to have a response for every possible combination of words (ex. Me: "Buttermilk firework face tie. How about that?." "NPC: *head asplode*). And secondly, I don't think I would like to have to talk to my tv to get through dialogue. That may sound lazy but it's more that I would feel like the worlds sorriest bastard. I guess it would have to depend on how well it was implemented but I still would rather not have to talk for 15 hours to get through an RPG.
