It's hard to be a fanboy or care about exclusives when you own every system.
Ah the joys of money :) I need to use my Wii more though..

I'm not gonna lie...I bought a Wii only cause chicks love it. And it's hilarious to hear them ask if they can come over and play with my Wii.
My GF bought one for some reason, then we gave it to my sister, then we later bought another one for Wii fit. Now I just use it for gamecube games, and that is very rare as I keep focusing on the newer titles these days. I totally see your point with the chicks digging your Wii though, and that would be a lot more useful to me if I was single lol.

Say all you want about having superior hardware, and I'll point you to GameGear and Sega Genesis. It's all about the software, and exclusive software is what's going to convince the public to select their hardware over their opponents.

I mean, Super Mario Galaxy is fun, but I'm just not really into much of their stuff anymore. But it's nice to bust out when people come over for a party and whatnot.

Exclusives will be default be made to suit the certain hardware advantages and restrictions by that developer.

So, the result can likely be a game to look forward to as it's made less versatile for general systems. This results in a game being something that you otherwise wouldn't experience. This is why you'll often see that exclusives define a console in the long run.

That's how I see it.

Or people just like to troll other console owners >_>

Everyone wants to feel special with exclusives, but it's not. Exclusives mean that a game company hates money, because selling to multiple mediums just means more money overall. That's basic economics right there. Less isn't more. More is more!

I personally think ps3 has the best exclusives. And you know, for me, exclusives really are a major push/pull factor when thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of each console. Does that make me a follower? Dunno. Or care, really...

When I realized that there are games on all systems that I wanted to play, I stopped giving a shit about console exclusives. I own all of this gens gaming consoles and if I want to play a game that is only on the 360, I'll play it.

Yes, but if a company can't afford to make a game AND ship it out, it will be kind of pointless. Mass Effect was sponsored by Microsoft in order to be shipped out (that's why you'll never see it on the PS3) and I think we can all say that we're a little better for having that be an exclusive than not having it at all.
You know, I first became aware of Microsoft's exclusive dealings way back when the Oddworld people were working on their next game after Abe's Exoddus. They'd already proven themselves capable of producing and shipping with two kick-ass games. Then, Microsoft said "Hey! Sign up with us! We're cool!" and they did. And they actually kinda' suffered. Exclusive deals with Microsoft isn't to save money. It's so Microsoft has exclusives, so that they deny others money...like out of spite or something. It's business, and it's an act which - while not illegal - is a dick move.

Okay, dick-moves happen alot in business, but Microsoft is also super-rich with resources. They don't have to do that. And game developers aren't necessarily too poor to go multi-platform. Lots of people did it then and do it now. You at least minimize the blow if you develop for the Sony and X-Box camp, but to go absolutely exclusive smacks of something less than decent going on, even for business.
I guess the thought of a guaranteed income of a stupid amount and an excuse to only have to worry about programing and bug testing for one system does have certain advantages.
And I guess that's exactly why they take it. Still, I'm sure to the point of absolute certainty that any fan of Oddworld at the time was pissed. And I imagine this happens all the time with all other exclusives when you don't have the right system for...whatever reason. Either money or choice, or whatever. And because of that, opinions are made and business opportunities are lost.
I hated Munch's Oddysee from the get go, I did complete it mind you, but the shift to 3D wasn't what I expected and it only made me love the first two all the more.

That wasn't the only game to get butchered in the move to Xbox, Dino Crisis 3 as well was smashed with a sledgehammer, all I got from that game was pieces of what used to be a pretty awesome franchise that could have lead on to far better things (considering RE is doing my head in now, I'd much rather shoot dinosaurs then zombies that are confused as to whether they are zombies or monster plants).

Oh, and Team Ninja's choice to go multiplatform and work on something new rather than Heavenly Sword 2 because Sony was mean to them, meant they lost more money on Enslaved then they gained with thier exclusive of HS. That sucks.

I tend to lean more towards the 360 exclusives, as I'm a little burnt out of first person shooters. Not to say I don't enjoy Killzone but I really favor Gears of War and Fable. I did however buy my ps3 specifically for MGS4, and before that my ps2 for MGS 2,3.

The big reason my ps3 collection isn't growing as fast as my 360 collection tends to be that my friends are all 360 owners, so cross platform games will generally be purchased on the 360 unless I don't think my friends will be playing them or I don't care if they do. Generally single player focused(cross platform) games will be purchased on the ps3.

Say, I never played Dino Crisis games, myself. Can I call that a recommendation?
Indeed, though there is quite a difference between the two originals, the first one is slower and more puzzle orientated, defo more of a survival theme, the second one is an action survival, so less looking for means to survive and more blasting Trexes in the face.

Definitely loved those two games :D

I thought 'exclusives' were a way of differentiating otherwise similar consoles, thereby giving a consumer a clearer market choice.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thats usually the idea yes, but it's also a way of defining a brand. We know Nintendo for Mario, so we know what to expect when buying a Nintendo console, we know Xbox for Halo so again we know what to expect when we buy an Xbox and of course, we know Sony for Uncharted as another example, so again we know what to expect.

As much as dreamy world where all games are cross platform sounds great, I fail to see how the console companies would be able to compete, if anything they'll just add more useless crap we don't need like facebook apps and tv tuners just to fill the lack of purpose.

Next thing we'll have PS3's in Bravia TVs and Xboxes that have word processor just because all the games are multiplat and uninteresting, lol.
