I'm bored of wow and have done some reading. I hear that you get drops and stuff, that sounds pretty cool. Is there a place I can go or a guide I should read to get the basics down before playing? Is there a newbie mode or something? I don't want to be "that guy". Also, what do you DO in the game?

update: Have the game and doing pretty well atm, found a server I liked and am playing it whenever it's up, one of the tf2newbs servers.

Eh. It's not that complicated. You've got different classes, which mostly means that they have different weapons/speed/health. Most of them are pretty straightforward.

It's like a cartoon mixed with FPS with a few RPG elements scrambled in. You should only play if you like comedy and First Person Shooters.

Basic TF2 Knowledge:

It's a large scale FPS
Multiplayer only, but there's one (short) singleplayer mode
Comes by itself for around $20 on Steam, or around $30 on the Orange Box (which includes four other games. Yeah.)

There are several different game modes: Area Control, Capture the Flag, Payload, and tons of community-made modes.
There are around thirty different maps, not counting community maps.
Nine (very balanced) classes: Scout, Soldier, Pyro, Engineer, Heavy, Demoman, Medic, Sniper, and Spy.
It uses health-kit health, not recharghible health.
Around 50+ added weapons, and hats.
Despite above fact, the game is very well balanced.
EVERYTHING I mentioned is free (well, on the PC at least).

Best tip: Play as a Medic: Self healing, not much combat needed, basically just follow experienced players and learn the ropes. But please, heal the guys with the big guns.

Its like a... Double Rainbow!

OT: Its a FPS with a class system basically, but you can change to a different class whenever you like when your dead or within a certain time after you spawn.

Each class does something different. Scout captures points faster then other classes and is faster/can jump higher. Heavy is basically a Tank. Medic is your healer, but can also be effective in combat, and can provide a invul buff after hes healed enough. and Pyro can KILL EVERYTHING WITH FIRE.

Hat drops are purely cosmetic. Weapon drops change gameplay up for certain classes. And thats basically all you really need to know about the game :p

The "drops" are very loosely tied to gameplay. It'd be more accurate to think of them as random weapon unlocks to "reward" you for playing the game.

If you're new, there are plenty of newbies servers and communities where you can learn the ropes. Valve also included a tutorial map, if you aren't already loosely familiar with the concept of a first person shooter. It was included when Mac compatibility was added in.

Epicness incarnate

Seriously though the game is buckets of fun and will last you a long time, Grab it in the orange box if you don't own the other games yet also.

Shameless plug for PC TF2 fans or people interested [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Team-Fortress-2-Group-PC]

TF2 is one of the better FPS games out there, fun, silly, doesn't take itself too serious and dedicated servers which means you can always find nice people to play with eventually, especially around the Escapist servers.

I main Medic/Engineer, playing mostly a support role, though I have been known to go "Battle Medic". In one round of about 6 a side, I managed to actually get more kills with my Medic than assists.

We won, so I doubt anyone could really complain about effectiveness.

And yet, at the same time, any game can suddenly turn into the most serious match of your life.
Definitely try it out, OP. 'Tis quite a bit of fun if you're with the right people.

Requesting an Auto-Tune version of this. We can put this to music, I just know it.

Are there any mods/addons I should use with the game? I guess I will start as a medic.

As long as you don't join me on the xbox version, valve left tf2 twin bro back at the house when they went on a long awesome journey.
